MS Office 2010

My laptop is installed with MS Office 2007, which I am happy to use. My office at work has a legal share CD with the 2010 version, so I can upgrade for free.

Should I even bother, as I see this as a classic case of "If it ain't broke...."?

Just my observations.....I am retired and use MS Office for my personal use only after many years in the business world. I have been using the 2003 version for many years and have been very happy with it. I could do any and everything I wanted to without any thought. I had to purchase a new computer that came with Windows 7 and find that the 2003 version of MS Office is not compatible and I am FORCED to upgrade to 2010. It is definitely different and has a learning curve to it. Now I have to spend a lot of time finding how to do what I used to do with no thought. I wish I didn't HAVE to but the "powers that be" (Microsoft) do not allow you to have a choice, they force you to change whether you want to or not, whether you NEED to or not. Point being, whether you want to or not, eventually you are going to HAVE to upgrade. Your only decision is: now or later.

I was using MS Pro 2000 forever, until this past summer. My DH got a full version of 2010 from work (legal) and I was hesitant to install it b/c of the learning curve and all my business files were in 2000. I wasn't sure if there would be issues converting them. There wasn't. I'm happy that I installed 2010 and am really enjoying all that it offers (which is SOOOOOO much more than 2000). Once you get the hang of where to look for things, it will come easy, like anything else. I say, go for it, especially since it's free, and like murphy said, you will have to upgrade sooner or later and the learning curve will be there whenever you do.

I printed this out, and did exactly as it was listed. But I have Microsoft Office Word 97-2003 and Microsoft Word Documents. When I get to the area where there are normal dot file stuff, I had 3, now I have two. Should I get rid of the Microsoft Office 97-2003. If necessary I can print out the items and reenter them in 2007. Or should I spend the money and get Office 2010 (and really mess me up) Thanks for the help. Marie

I can tell you that Microsoft Office and Open Office are not 100% compatible. Depending on the complexity of the documents you use, you may need to spend some time "converting" them to an Open Office format. You also need to be concerned if you "share" any electronic documents with business associates that use Microsoft Office. Even though Open Office gives you the option of saving in an Microsoft Office, I've noticed some minor differences with documents created in Open Office and later opened in Microsoft Office. Since Open Office is a free download, there's no reason you can't try it and see how it works for you. As an aside, I think you'll find the user agreement for Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition prohibits commercial use. While it is highly unlikely that the Microsoft police will come knocking, it is something you should be aware of.

you can disconnect an old machine from the web .... and not worry about security issues ... so use your old machine... disconnected ... with all its old programs ... and peripherals .... and just get a new machine .... for WWW work .... you would probably be amazed what you can get ... machine.. and memory-wise.. for a half or a quarter of what you invested in the old machine .... it really is mind bending ... then.. all you have to figure out.. is how to get info from one to the other ... and a memory stick.. or some such... will usually get around that ... you guys seem to be trapped in the one machine for everything issue ... if i liked to tour the woods in a 4 wheel truck .. i would have an old beat up one for two tracking and ditch driving... and a nicer newer one.. for the roads ... and work ... personally ... for the cost of W10 ... and the hours it will take an old 7 person to install and learn it... [not to mention the mind bending stress .. lol] ..... for about 300 bucks.. you can have a new machine and be enjoying both... inside a half day ... when its all said and done.. i would probably wait until 10 came out ... if you can wait that long ... right now.. an investment of a stand alone memory.. and full backup for the old machine on that.. MIGHT save you ... from future disaster.. if you rely on an unsupported .. wired to the WWW ... operating system ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: and you could get it for about half... if you coule figure out how to share the old moniter ....

OK, thanks for the reassurance. I'll bite the bullet today. I'm not worried so much about the learning curve, as I am about uninstalling (do I need to?) and reinstalling a new program on a laptop that's working perfectly. Always makes me twitchy!

Yes, you will need to uninstall MS Office 2007 before you can install MS Office 2010. Just curious though, what version of MS Office 2007 are you uninstalling, and what version of MS Office 2010 will you be installing?

Currently Microsoft - Office Professional Plus 2007.

Won't know 2010 version until I get the disc!

Yes it matters Shax, your 2007 is the full suite. As your 2010 version is coming from an office environment it too is almost certainly the full suite. You would not want the Home and student version which is a stripped down version.

I used the free version which microsoft made available lately - Starter Edition, then made a 5 or 600mb portable that I cam use simply when word or excel is needed, on odd occasion for me.
