dvd/cd burner won't burn a dvd/2nd pc wont burn either

I have a DVD/CD burner. I can burn a CD but Not a DVD. PC will display "Put a Disk in drive". My wife has the same but will not burn either one and displays same message. Both appear to have started doing this during the 6 months prior to Christmas. Will I have to reload Windows XP Home or it there an easier way? I just did a search and tried the information that came up. Device manager says all is OK on Both PCs. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried adjusting the settings on the drive so it's allow to burn CD's?
Open "My Computer", RIGHT click on the DVD/CD burner drive, choose "Properties".
When that opens, click on the "Recording" tab and place a CHECK mark in the box next to "Enable CD recording on this drive". Click on "Apply", then OK.

I just replaced the dead cd-burner drive on one of my computers, I got a lite-on DVD burner drive that does pretty much everything from newegg for like $39. There are good prices out there. I also have an external usb cd-burner that I can connect to any of my computers by usb to have an added cd-burner, I found it on a clearance rack at an electronics store for around $15. If you do not want to dig into the machine to take the old one out and install the new one you may want to get one of the external usb ones. Replacing the internal one is not difficult but does take a bit of knowledge, it is more difficult than say adding memory. Some times the doors can get off the tracks and on occasion they can be taken out and worked on and fixed but that is a big maybe! It is a good idea to never force things! Also if you use the paperclip in the little hole in the front of the drive it is usually advised to have the pc turned off and unplugged to do that, I know not everyone does that but on the directions that come with them it does say that. Guess the risk of something electrical happening is the reason.

When you insert your CD I assume the activity light on the DVD player is activated for a few seconds? Your DVD would undoubtedly have the auto start feature where your photo CDs would not. So try right click on Start, click Explore in the pop up. Now look down the left side for your CD/DVD player and click on that to highlight. Hopefully all your photos or folders on that CD will now appear in the right side of your screen.

Tell us what, if anything, happens once you insert the CD in the drawer. Is the data written using genealogy program, if so are you running the same software to recognise the data? As kudzu9 notes, you can use Windows Explorer RIGHT click Start click Explore and a new window appears. Look down the left side for your CD player, likely marked as D: click on it to highlight it and now look in the right pane for the contents of the CD. Try double clicking on anything that says 'Application' to the right of the file name.

Sounds like maybe the darker color thing mentioned above may also play into it. My 2001 Grand Cherokee ( factory am/fm/cd/casette player) will not recognize burned CDs. i am currently using my laptop with XP and have tried windows player, I-tunes and BurnerXP but haven't noticed any different results from any of that different software. After going thru about 30 cds burning at different speeds and formats, I finally got it to occasionally recognize one I burnt at around 4X using PCM .wav (uncompressed) format but to recognize and play I usually have to fast forward it thru a couple of songs while it is doing the initial read. Once it recognizes and starts playing then will usually play the whole CD but doesn't always work for whatever reason. I may try the label thing or try to find some of the "dark" cds to see if that matters. We have a 98 KIA witn an aftermarket cd player and it will play just about anything burnt to cd no matter format or speed.

Are you using the correct media? It is so easy to buy the wrong disks - +R or -R. Some of the newer drives can use both, but I must use +R in mine (and I always buy -R - duh!)

Just curious if you have recently did an anti-vius scan as well as a malware scan if so what programs are you using.

I am useing same two stacks of DVDs that worked previously.
DVD+R and CD-R

Norton 2008 and a squared free. I suspect that this problem occured after loading Norton. It has been around 6 months since last useing burner for DVD.

Coho, I posted on the other thread before I saw this. Several years ago, I purchased a computer that had Norton installed. I could not burn a DVD on that computer until after I removed every trace of Norton. When I called Tech support at Norton, they told me that it was a known problem, and sent me a refund check. That was many years ago however, and I wouldn't think they would still be having that problem.

Might want to try a lens cleaner.
I've read that there are two different lasers for reading/writing DVDs and CDs. I would try a lens cleaner which is a cd with brushes that brush the dust off the optical laser lens.

I don't have a cleaner but it worth a try. So will get one soon. The real puzzel is that this occured on two machines, likely at near the same time some time in the 6 months prior to xmas. Thanks

I suspect that this problem occured after loading Norton. It has been around 6 months since last useing burner for DVD.

Have you tried uninstalling Norton?

My computer has never been so problem free since I dumped any and all Norton products. Runs much faster also.

I use AVG Free for my antivirus software.

You may need to download some removal tools from Symantec to completely get rid of Norton.
