DVD Rom added but won't read

I have an older Dell Dimension 2400, that runs Windows XP , I use this for my Vinyl plotter, and I needed to add a DVD reader for some of the software, so I picked up a HL-DT-ST DVD Rom GDR8163B, I installed it into my tower and in the device manager it shows, it's installed and says it's working, but when I insert a CD or DVD it spins slow for a couple of seconds and stops, and won't read the disc,

I also have Sonic Record Now Version 7 on this computer,

Is there another software for CD Burning that might be better suited ?

Any help would be appreciated

Your message is slightly confusing because you are mixing DVD and CD without really defining which you are using.

XP does not understand a DVD because it was created before we got the DVDs so additional software is needed. It should read a CD though, try a music CD and see what happens.

If in fact you need to work with a DVD you might try Deepburner which is free and I found a very good program when using XP

Thanks for the reply,

I installed the DVD drive to read DVD's and I already had a CD Burner installed first, I believe the Drive I installed is a Combo drive, CD and DVD, and I have Tried all of the Following in this drive. Music CD, DVD Movie, DVD software and even a Software CD all with the same result, it just spins slow for a couple of second and stops, and if I click on the Drive in My Computer, it will say install Disc and it tries to find the disc with no luck

I will also try the Deep Burner

One possible issue When you add files or folders to a disc that already contains data, some files are lost. I just replaced the dead cd-burner drive on one of my computers, I got a lite-on DVD burner drive that does pretty much everything from newegg for like $39. There are good prices out there. I also have an external usb cd-burner that I can connect to any of my computers by usb to have an added cd-burner, I found it on a clearance rack at an electronics store for around $15. If you do not want to dig into the machine to take the old one out and install the new one you may want to get one of the external usb ones. Replacing the internal one is not difficult but does take a bit of knowledge, it is more difficult than say adding memory. Some times the doors can get off the tracks and on occasion they can be taken out and worked on and fixed but that is a big maybe! It is a good idea to never force things! Also if you use the paperclip in the little hole in the front of the drive it is usually advised to have the pc turned off and unplugged to do that, I know not everyone does that but on the directions that come with them it does say that. Guess the risk of something electrical happening is the reason.

So with the activity light coming on we now know the power is there on both drives. Normally after that period of slower flashing it would/should start to flash much quicker indicating it is reading the CD but you do not get that. Try checking the Device manager click Start click Control panel click System click Hardware click Device manager Now in this new window look for yellow exclamation or question marks. Double click on any if they are present and see what it brings up. If no yellow marks then look for and double click on DVD/CD ROM drives, click the various tabs looking for error messages or it telling you the device is working properly. When you try a CD are you using a music CD or some software program? Try a music CD then open Windows Media Player and see what happens when you try to play the music. We might be clutching at straws here but if you exhaust all avenues before spending your money on a repairman it might be worth it.

Sounds like maybe the darker color thing mentioned above may also play into it. My 2001 Grand Cherokee ( factory am/fm/cd/casette player) will not recognize burned CDs. i am currently using my laptop with XP and have tried windows player, I-tunes and BurnerXP but haven't noticed any different results from any of that different software. After going thru about 30 cds burning at different speeds and formats, I finally got it to occasionally recognize one I burnt at around 4X using PCM .wav (uncompressed) format but to recognize and play I usually have to fast forward it thru a couple of songs while it is doing the initial read. Once it recognizes and starts playing then will usually play the whole CD but doesn't always work for whatever reason. I may try the label thing or try to find some of the "dark" cds to see if that matters. We have a 98 KIA witn an aftermarket cd player and it will play just about anything burnt to cd no matter format or speed.

I suggest you try to call LG tech support. With a computer that old, you might need some kind of driver or firmware update regardless of the fact that you don't have any warning flags in your Device Manager.

OK after posting on Dell's site it was brought to my attention, that the DVD Rom is supposed to have a jumper, which I knew in older computers was needed, well mine doesn't and it's supposed to be set on cable select,

I will try this and see,

If you Google the info you provided, it comes up as an LG drive. Didn't it have a manufacturer showing on the box when you picked it up?

Kudzu9 This was a Used DVD rom that I picked up, so i didn't know only what the computer repair place told me,

But after running around and getting a jumper and all it came out that the drive was defective.. This is what I get for buying used parts But now it's fixed and Thanks again for all the replies
