red windows on french country farmhouse

Hi,

Can anyone share pics of their houses with red windows and stone? We are building a house and are trying to decide on red windows with stone exterior on the front of house, brick on side and back.

Does anyone have red windows on their house? Love it or hate it?

Hi alphadog! We're in the process of building and just had our red windows installed. Our house will be clad in stone and brick, but for now, it's just green Zip sheathing. I collected several pictures when we were in the decision phase. The first is from a local real estate listing and appears to be French-inspired. Hope these give you some ideas!

After a long day of rearranging the LR, hooking up electronics, and being w/o phone/ internet service, I am back!!!! Parma - that's exactly what I envision. Since I do sweep fairly regularly I want to find a real handmade broom to keep in the corner in the kitchen. I'm sure that DS1 would call it mommy's witches broom! Martha Stewart did a segment on handmade brooms one time and I wish I'd have paid more attention. And old flooring - I think the more aged, worn and dinged up it is the better for me! Stinky - Gardener (Great name) -I've actually been buying stuff here and there and packing it away for a few yrs. now. The house that we live in is Victorian on the inside but I've known the house we are moving to for a long time and it's more in line w/ our simple comfort level. There's no way that our current bedroom style would work in the other house but I am very happy w/ it and yrs. down the road I'm sure that it too will morph into a French Country Farmhouse style. For now I just want to enjoy the finished product. Tish - that sounds perfect, European Farmhouse! I will def. have to google that term and see what pops up. I'm thinking that Shabby Chic look too but w/ way less cottage & flower prints and a lot more farm and durability! Kmcg - thank you very much for the link. Guess what I'll be doing during downtime at work today after all of my work is finished?! Polly - that sounds so pretty - hopefully you will opst some pics anyways despite living through a reno. A real nice thing about GW here is that we've seen pics of eachother's homes at their worst. One of my favorite threads was one where everybody had to go take a picture of their kitchen in the moment and post it. It was great to see kitchens in their 'disaray state' that were typically posted after having been 'staged' for their GW photo op.! I really want DR chairs w/ rush seats and a farmhouse table but DH is so attached to his grandmother's fancy set that I don't even want to suggest it. Ronbre - both of your homes sound very lovely. I can see where it would be tough to decorate in the exact same manner after such a horrible event. I'd love to see pics of the man room and your MBR. Tina - right now I have much of the hardwired stuff packed away like my chandeliers and sconces. Most of it I'd pick up at deep discounts when I worked at Bombay. Our storage rm. was laid out so poorly that items would get stuck in the most hidden spots and forgotten about until I'd rip the place apart and find things that had been there for yrs. My 2 favorite chandies were only $59. Currently I visit them in my attic and peek in the boxes and dream. I didn't want to hang them all and then have to turn around and take them down to sell this house and put all of the original stuff back up. If things pan out alright I will take pics of the LR after I have some more stuff done. I def. have to paint again. When DH moved all of the entertainment stuff I forgot that I hadn't painted behind it all. There's a big bright blue patch! I'd also like to pick up a ceiling fan and paint out the ceiling after 9 yrs. here. There are just wires hanging from the ceiling now. Someone here had recently posted a photo of their Baby Turtle walls and Limestone ceiling and it was so gorgeous so I am going to follow suit and do the same.

Hello, SweetAnnie, and welcome to the neighborhood. Our footprint on the earth is smaller than some, but we manage to LIVE LARGE. Oh yes, that French kitchen is a classic. I've thought about copper fixtures in the kitchen, and mostly decided to stick with stainless to match the appliances....BUT I do love copper pots. I also found some copper trays which I use for flower pot saucers, or for service boiled crawfish or boiled shrimp and crab. That is the way they do it in south Louisiana, and I like their style. I think I saw a bunch of copper containers in Pottery Barn home cat, and Williams Sonoma cat recently too. Lavender, if you get software for Christmas, please review it for us, so we know if it really works. I have Sweet Home which is free download, unless you wish to donate to them. Haven't figured it out totally, but did "furnish" our Alabama house. I even figured the square footage of that house, as it is now after bringing in the 10 x 10 sun porch and the 5 x 19 closet/bath bumpout, as being nigh on to 1000 square feet. By the time I redo the kitchen and add a wee bit to the master bedroom, another 180 sq feet, we will top out at 1180 feet. Or say 1200. Maximum. This is the floor plan I did with the Sweet Home software. I just upload it here to SHOW AND TELL. I won't describe what it represents on this thread, don't want to hijack Lavender's discussion. Lavender First I forgot to answer the snow question. We got six to 8 inches on top of what we had. Not a lot of melting going on as last week we were very cold at 6 degrees to maybe 16 for the high. Snowed a few inches today but we are cleared out at the house so all is well.Joe just bought this Blade for the side by side and can plow us out in less than half an hour and we have lots of driveway.OH and you can see some of the snow but this is before last storm. There is lots more now.We usually end up with three to four foot on the ground. Just getting started. Yes we did get the porch. Love it. It is only 8 foot wide and to any one I would suggest 10 foot wide for porch a better size. but 8 foot works. Also the porch faces the street so we enter directly into what is supposed to be the dinning room. The living room door goes out to what we call the court yard. We added 3 stretches. Two foot across master bedroom end and two foot across in living room kitchen end and 16 inches in the middle across the two bedrooms. OH wah your link will not load right now.Said try later. I really like the large master bath and you will enjoy your large hall bath. We had the option to put door between kitchen and laundry and almost wish I had done that. And we can later. A pretty French door would be wonderful. This would have made it possible to include our hall bath with laundry room and make it feel larger too. Still working on that in my brain. With just us I can leave that bath/laundry room door open and this keeps from steaming up the bath when I shower in there ,which I do some times when we both need to get ready in a hurry. Course then I have to keep a curtain on the laundry room door to outside for privacy. We really are comfortable in this house.I will keep checking in on your link. I am also a little disheartened to see this style kitchen everywhere because when I began planning mine there weren't many to be found. Mine is in a lake cottage home and I think it's so well suited to the casual, rural surroundings that it will always look "in place" and "in time" which is what I most wanted. I have to say I was happy to hear that my cabinet supplier discontinued offering the denim blue stain/glaze that my island was done in. That, at least, will be my distinguishing feature! I would encourage you to go with this style if you love it. I don't think it will soon be dated. The only instance I would say not to do it is if it doesn't fit the rest of the house or location i.e. The Barefoot Contessa has this type kitchen in her cottage in the Hamptons, but the one in her NY city apartment (featured in a recent House Beautiful issue)is styled very differently to fit that building and locale.

Hi Nutherokie,
I'm new to the this website and greatly appreciate the pictures you posted! We are definitely going with the red windows!! We just started building 3 weeks ago. Foundation poured and the framing should be done by this weekend. I'll post some progress pictures tomorrow. What type of shingles did you select? We have to have shingles picked out this coming week. We are building a house called The Armand by Jack Arnold. The process so far has been frustrating and exciting. Thanks for your help!!

Alphadog, that first house is a Jack Arnold plan. I'll attach another picture that shows off the windows. We came so close to using a Jack Arnold plan and I can't tell you how many times I wish we'd gone that way. We thought we'd get something to better fit our site by hiring a local architect.

Our shingles are Certainteed Independence in Colonial Slate. They are supposed to be "lifetime" shingles, and are basically shades of gray with little inclusions of deep red. The red is very subtle, but I think it helps integrate the red windows. Everyone who's seen it in real life really seems to like the roof. The color changes a lot depending on the light, which is nice. I don't seem to have any great pics of it.

Isn't the framing stage exciting? It's like magic. Abracadabra -- a house!

We are using the The Armand plan 3293. We have been so busy lately between our jobs and trying to get everything picked out, that I haven't had a chance to get back on this website and post any pictures. Which plan did you use?

We used an Armand but made a lot of changes. For one, we added 6ft to the length (2 ft in three areas), changed garage to 3 cars, deleted stairs in kitchen that went to (deleted) room over garage, bath and bedroom (no views and did not need the room), main level bedroom off breakfast area was made into sunroom, that bedroom closet was made the kitchen pantry by moving door, moved closet to make main level laundry bigger/longer, took shared bathroom from deleted bedroom (sunroom) so that main level guest bedroom has private bath, added powder room off kitchen and a lower level the size of the main level (library hallways, exercise room, two baths, two bedrooms, second laundry room within a storage room, storage closet under stairs, storage room under DR and a single garage for equipment storage plus a room under front veranda for storage of more equipment/tools, The lower is opened on three sides. We live on a point, on a lake, so lots and lots of big windows for views of it and the mountain ridge. I LOVE our home! You will love yours too!

I'm not sure what the difference is in our plans. Don't have the sheet on that one, but have a 3190. Does yours have the brick/wood garage or board and batten main house with stone garage? We changed the board and batten to brick (wanted low maintenance and with the carpenter bees and dirt dobbers, boy I am glad we did!) Most of the floor plans are similar. There are several different elevations. Would love to see yours when you have time to post. You can also email me through GW.

Good luck with your build. Have you started yet? If not, my best advice is to get everything you can picked out ahead of time, and start ordering what you'll need first. Our garage looked like a warehouse. I ordered sinks, toilets, faucets, shower heads online. All of our light fixtures too. Are you doing the copper cupola? At the time, I found the maker for theirs online and ordered at a big savings. Prices on copper have gone up, so they are closer in price now. I can look him up, if you'd like.
