Please bear with me as this is lengthy & thanks in advance...

I purchased a new pc back in September 2007:

HP-A6212N with Intel Dual-Core E2140 processor, 4GB RAM (self added 2GB), 320GB disk

Running: Windows Vista Home Premium, IE7, Norton Antivirus trial version.

When I first installed the pc, I could not believe how fast it was. Internet was lightning quick with Optimum Online.

After about a month, it began showing signs of slowing down a little, mostly internet.

I then installed my printer software for my HP6180 all in one. It ran about the same.

A few days later, I installed Norton System Works 2008. Still running same.

2 weeks later, I began losing internet connectivity. Diagnosed it to a bad wireless router. Replaced it. No change in speed but connectivity improved.

Desktop is hard wired to internet. I also have an HP laptop connected via wireless router that was running fine.

A few weeks pass, and basic system tasks (ex: opening Explorer file manager) take up to 1/2 minute. Internet performance beginning to deteriorate even more.

Yesterday the cable modem took a dive so it got replaced. No change in desktop internet response & other system functions are lackluster. Laptop now working VERY fast on internet.

I've defragged the desktop several times. No Viruses found. I've cleared IE6 & IE7 temp internet files & cookies MANY times.

My wife uses AOL, so I used the spyware program & none were found.

I do NOT download a lot music or pics. This desktop is used primarilly for email, internet, Ebay. The disk drive is at 8% capacity.

AOL is using IE6 for a browser. I use IE7. Could this be an issue & if so, why?

I thought about formatting the disk & starting fresh but then I have to reload all my software. Would a system restore be a good idea instead?

Any advice on what to try in an attempt to restore its performance when it was new? I'm really at a loss so any help would be highly appreciated!

If you easily know how to turn off indexing,, turn it off.

Go into your control panel, classic view. Double click Performance Info & Tools - assuming Vista. What's the performace scores of the different items ?

Back out of Performance to control panel again, scroll down to Problem Reports & Solutions... on the left there... See Problems... See problem History. Check for Solutions. Those are all good things to look at.

Back out to contol panel, Double click Administative tools. Open Computer Management.... click Event View... give it time to load... See the Errors in past hour, and 24 hours... that may tell you whats wrong.

To me it sounds from your post that you have a trial version of Norton running that came with the pc and now the Norton 2008 security suite that you installed if that is the case it would slow it down to a crawl.

Welcome to the forum. You have been reading some very old posts. Bestlawn has been missing from the forum for about five years. In any case, we miss her and I will let her know that the heavens parted and you have seen the light. Please name the town you live in in SoCal. I grew up in Riverside, went to school in Pomona, worked in Downey and Hawthorne, and had relatives in Los Angeles (the real Los Angeles), Stanton, Palm Desert, and Indio. Sometimes I can help with details that most people would not be aware of. I would wait a few weeks for the soil to dry out before making judgements about the soil. One thing you might do is to apply a thin layer of compost. Let's see, if you have 400 square feet then 1/2 yard of compost is all you need. Normally I would say that mowing the grass that short might result in seeing the yellowish blades, but that grass is a dwarf variety and should not show yellow. How do you know you had a grub problem and which insecticide did you use?

Pic helps a bunch. Your raised beds look good, and looking at the far one it looks like you used the plastic only on the sides where the wood is. So I don't see a problem with the plastic. You simply have raised beds, not containers. At 8" depth the cardboard is unnecessary. You can just pile the dirt into the beds on the grass, on the grass will be smothered. At 8" in the near term it will limit your root depth, and may cause problems with deeper rooting plants and roots veg's. If it were mine, I'd take it out. With the soil on top of the underlying turf, it will settle over time as the grass underneath decomposes. My experience with St. Augustine is that settling will be ~ 1". With the cardboard the settling will be a bit more, maybe 1.5". Now, the grass -- it looks like you're in Cocoa Beach (zip code), and the turf looks like a very decent stand of St. Augustine. Your problem with the grass won't be the stuff in the beds that gets smothered, it will be the stuff on the outside that comes right up to the edges. It will try to find a way into those beds, and usually St. Augustine is successful (if there's any Bermuda in there it tends to be even more invasive). I would encourage to develop a turf-free zone around those beds. There are many options. On the soil - since you're dealing with uncomposted horse manure, I would suggest no more than 1" of that per bed. Add it on top of a base soil fill in the beds, then mix in in well, trying to get it distributed through the entire 8" depth. The base soil in those beds would ideally be a loam or sandy loam, if you can get it. Being in Cocoa Beach I suspect your base soil is rather sandy. You could use that (if you have some to move) along with some compost and the horse manure, but you'll probably have better luck with bringing in new soil. Check landscape supplies in your yellow pages. Final point - exposure. Don't know when that picture was taken, but the beds are in complete shade. Where do those beds sit relative to the fence -- west side, east side, etc, and what is the direction of the fence line (N/E/S/W)? The good news is you're in the beginning so with just a bit of work you can get it right and enjoy some great growing. Since you are using raw manure I would encourage you to heed to 90/120 day before harvest recommendations. Someone getting sick because you were in a hurry just isn't worth it. Be patient. elly has hit the nail on the head. You have a highly intelligent dog, they were bred to work 8 - 12 hours a day, so they are not going to be satisfied with being let out in the backyard for a couple of minutes in the morning to do their bsuiness and then placed in a crate all day - this is a good way to make a good dog insane. I suggest you find a local dog park, start training your dog with frequent and long dog walks - preferrably leash walking. You also need to start some obedience training, hopefully through a good positive reinforcement trainer with a good sized group of dogs. You should run your dog, let it play at a dog park or take it for a long walk before training - a tired dog is easier to train. Start behavioral training with the basics, sit stay lay down and leave it. These should be done in a calm manner with a firm voice. I suggest going to get a Natural Balance meat stick, cut off a round, dice that up and use it for training treats/rewards. When your dog does what you want, praise it with your voice and with the food. Find out if your dog is a ball dog, a frisbee dog or a stick dog, most Aussies are one, I suggest you have some time set aside each day for playtime, playing fetch. I would also recommend trying agility or flyball or some other activity - including search and rescue. Your dog is highly intelligent, very adaptable and willing to please you. You just need to direct it. Once you get training down you can tell your dog to leave it, when it goes to the place it likes to dig, once you have told your dog what you dont want, follow it up with playtime, and letting your dog know what you do want. Provide a kong, fill it with meat sticks, baby carrots etc, and have your dog play with that - your pup just needs some stimulation in its world, and it is smart enough to go start its own if you dont provide it. Good luck with your dog, in the right environment your dog will be an asset to your life.

Yes, uninstall the trial version of Norton that came with the computer, Do an online virus scan at Trend Micro or one of the others. Then download and install a couple of good antispyware utilities, like Adaware 2007 free, Spybot Search and destroy, or SuperAntispyware free. There are others too. Do a system clean, ie get rid of a temp files etc, Run the online virus scan, then run two of the spyware utilities one after the other.
When you download and install the spyware utilities, make sure that they are updated after you install and update before each use in the future

THANK YOU ALL for the advise thus far!

I checked & my MS firewall/internet protection are all turned off. I had over 8000 entries in the error log but nothing made sense to me - I cleared them (out f frustration) & will recheck later to see how many accumulate & take a closer look. I uninstalled the old Norton too.

System performance all show green checkmarks, status is GOOD. I forgot to mention I did optimize memory after I installed the additional 2GB.

I just had to refresh this page because it just would not load.

UGH!

Ditto with the previous comments. I found that the Norton installed on my most recent computer was a terrible hog and showed itself at every turn. Many new computers come with a slug of other free software that may run upon booting the computer rather than when you click an icon. A dual core processor computer should not be slow. A system restore may help but there are probably other reasons. Check the startup programs - Start : All Programs : Tools : Software Explorer : then click Startup Programs. This will show the programs running when booting. Make a list of the startups and research before disabling at bootup. Among sites for researching bleepingcomputer.com, answersthatwork.com, sysinfo.org --- and many others. To prevent running at bootup, check Disable, then Yes. This does not remove the program, it stops it at boot time. Repeat for each program to prevent running at startup. Before preventing from running, check more than one site - for verification, like the ones previously mentioned. If you have questions after researching, ask for help.

Hi all...I mostly lurk but felt I had to respond to this. I too had a new Dell computer..very fast at first...for like 2 weeks...then for no reason it slowed down to a snails pace on the net...I fretted and fussed...then decided it was Norton Anti-V. I uninstalled it....and downloaded and installed AVG Free. It did a 180 . I did the same thing with my very slow laptop...same results. I have used Norton for years but something was going on with it...I love AVG now...No more Norton for me.
Not sure if this will help you but it sure solved my problem.

When you are working like this you kind of want to un-do things that you have done since the purchase so that being said don't over look the possibility that the ram you yourself installed is or could be a problem, remove it reboot and try the computer. If that makes no difference un-install the norton that you installed using the norton removal tool, a bad norton install could cause trouble, I have no problem with norton but I do know when a pc has unexplained problems and norton is on the system it is something to be concerned with.

Just some other ideas here....

Sorry for the late reply to this. The error logs were full (thousands!) with internet connectivity errors. I uninstalled Norton but it seemed to still have a presence in the system & browser. I ran a full system recovery, and then reinstalled my Optimum Online & wireless router with their associated software. Then I got SMART and replaced Norton with AVG. Man, is my pc back to its speedy self!

My new HP with vista slowed down and would freeze up after I loaded on Zone Alarm...I totally removed all signs of Norton..still slow...I would have to power off just to shut down computer or get to a new program. I was loosing icons..and programs...and then they would mysteriously return...only to disappear again...whole computer became very unstable.. Third call to the Costco Techs(luckily that's where I bought this computer)had me do a system restore with them on the phone holding my hand...this restore took be back to supposed "out of the box" factory condition... But I swear this "out of the box" was somehow different from when I first turned on the machine...I am wondering if this was a returned computer that someone had previously "dinked" with....anyway I very slowly and very methodically added back my bookmarks, favorites and email addresses using Windows email not outlook...and reinstalled router, printer, mouse, and external HD software. I logged each thing I did to this machine and each time checked speed...internet was good and holding...I downloaded and installed AVG freebie ..got rid of Norton trial that came with the HP...absolutely no more Zone Alarm..although it was great with my XP machine...then I loaded on program software like Office, Quicken, Quickbooks, and Turbo Tax. Cross my fingers...everything seems to be running ok..and as fast as my XP computer.

It's a fact zone Alarm does not function on all machines same for Norton..

Nothing bogs down or screws up a PC like Norton/Symantic dump it and download Free AVG, you'll be glad you did!

Microsoft (Vista) does not want you using any other firewall but theirs. Try PC Tools Firewall Plus (free), but turn off Windows Firewall first.
