Building a Home

Oh my gosh, we're starting to move in!!

The electrician finished up today, and we hope to get final inspections and CO early next week. Main level carpeting will be done Monday and Tuesday, closet built-ins on Wednesday. Master shower isn't finished, but technically it's useable -- just a bit messy with no outer wall! Other than that, we're DONE!!

Our apartment lease is up April 30, but we've arranged to stay a couple extra days. But the good news is that the CO inspector gave us permission to move boxes into the garage and/or one lower level room -- "No open boxes, though" he said. That's okay with us! That's just an enormous help to us! We spent all day yesterday bringing things from the storage room here, and by Official Moving Day, May 2, all that will be left to move will be furniture!

How exciting!!! It will be helpful to atleast get to move some boxes. Make sure to post final pics :)

We're on the same time frame! We just got the backsplash and carpets in today, cleaning on monday and tuesday, move-in on thursday (30th!). Best of luck with your move! I know you and I will be quite busy in the next several weeks (okay, months more likely!!), but we'll have to do pictures soon!

Well, for to long promises of rain didn't deliver, and thus, I was out on a bike ride. I wrote this about it: What are the best biking friends? The kind, you can call up and they are ready in next to no time to go for a ride with you. The kind that once it starts raining, ride with you in the rain, and "yoo hoo" when the thunder claps. The kind that say: lay the bike down... when you are stopped at a red light, during a down pour, and make swimming motions... and say: Lets go for a swim. Thanks Esther! She is that kind of riding friend. She rode to the Paseo Arts Festival with me, even made me a peanut butter sandwich... and wasn't perturbed at all, when it started raining. We were the only gals leaving at the festival (on a bike) during a nice heavy downpour. What a hoot! Of course, I had started riding from home to the Memorial Day Lakes to Lakes ride. Stopped to help Sherry with a flat, and then called Esther once we got to the second lake. I had a FABULOUS ride. Thanks to both Sherry and Esther!

Juellie, yes my son knits, crochets and quilts. I taught him how to knit and crochet while he was in law school and visiting here at home during breaks, and he picked it up fast. He lives on the east coast and we live on the west coast, so he likes to while away the long flights with knitting, etc. He would meet with friends in a New York City coffee shop on Friday afternoons during his law school years to sip, chat and do needlework. He took classes in woodworking and quilting once he graduated, but he really does not have the time for such crafts with his long work hours and weeks these days. The young man who owns the table cloth, which I remodeled to fit his table, was a fellow classmate in law school and a friend of one of my son's good friends. The kid was looking for a resource, and since he knew my son could crochet, asked if he could finish and repair the cloth. I felt sorry for him. He was the only one in his family not tied down with children and career, so he was designated to go through his mother's things, save or dispose of them accordingly, and close up the house, all this while in law school. I lost my mother when I was 12, and so I felt a certain sympathy for him in his simple request to get her crocheted tablecloth repaired and remodeled so that he could use it. While I have crocheted a few tablecloths, I have never done anything like this, and I took longer than I should have because I was so afraid of ruining her work. Her stitches were tiny; the knots she used to tie off each motif impossible to locate and undo; the old, delicate cotton thread broke easily when I unraveled it; and I was overwhelmed with what I found myself volunteering to do. But it all worked out after years of worry and struggle, and so I am content.

What a wonderful story! And congratulations on your lovely new furniture. I can hardly wait to see them in your home. Your story reminds me of something similar that happened to me about 15 years ago. I drove past an antique store every day on the way to work, and kept admiring a maple corner hutch in their window. I told my husband about it and said that I wanted to run in and check the price when I had a chance. But a few days later it was sold. I told my husband I was kicking myself for not making it in sooner, because I had really loved it. The next day when I got home from work, it was all set up in the dining room, with my dishes all arranged on the shelves. Turns out he was the one who had bought it! It was such a lovely thoughtful thing to do - it made me cry! What a guy!

Granlan - Out here between Amarillo and Canyon we received between 2/10 and 3/10 inch of rain yesterday evening. Oh, everything smelled so good and I actually watched rain run off the roof of the shop! Our pastures are dry as a bone and I welcome any and all rain we get. Oh yes, we had a new Beefalo heifer yesterday morning. She's a cutie. Here's prayers for more rain in Oklahoma and Texas! We all need it..........
