this is the second story of a piece of crochet lace...one one of the ladies on hgtv was wondering what to do with a finished piece...it was about 1950's flavor and wasn't sure if it were table cloth or spread...

it's fantastic you have finished..one time I bought a roll of cotton yarn and the traditional stainless hook...but it lasted about 5 minutes! I just couldn't "see"/do it! now I wonder what to do with 2 doily my mother bought in Europe...but I've packed them away, sigh...

Susan, depending on their size, they would look pretty appliqued to a fancy pillow to decorate your bed or the guest bed. If you love them, they could also be framed and hung on the wall.

I'll bet it's beautiful. You are one heck of a nice person to have done the repair--huge job!--for your son's friend. I'm sure he'll be dumbfounded. :)

Oh, my gosh, you are so wonderful for taking on such a huge project! And since you say that you are pleased with it, I know you've done a truly fantastic job (because we are our own worst critics). Please, please, please post photos of it, because I know we would all love to see it.

Its not just anybody who could/would have done all that. I commend you for your thoughtfulness and perseverance. I bet it felt great to finish! Can't wait to see the picture!

What a wonderful, wonderful thing to do. Especially for someone you don't even know! I cannot even imagine taking on such a task. You must really love a challenge. Can't wait to see the photos.

My goodness! That was a big restoration and re-build job. You re-made all the ratty stuff. Its too bad you are not getting a restorer's fee for a professional job - but wait - you did say this was going to be a present. I hope the recipitant appreciates what you have done. He'd better protect it with clear cover when it is in use. I'd sure hate to see a cup of coffee or tea spilled on it.

Sounds like a lot of work. Congratulations on getting it done! I have two knitted afghans I should work on- one was made by my Grandmother and she used it as a lap-wrap in winter. The other was made by my Mother, she started it when my first daughter was born but never finished. I inheirited it after her death.

Please share some pictures with us. It sounds like a big project and I'm sure you did a beautiful job. Congratulations.

I started an afghan for a friend for her 60th birthday. I finally finished it and sent it to her for her 80th birthday (6 years ago) with a birthday card that said Happy 60th Birthday. At first she thought I was losing it because she is exactly 10 years older than me and she knows I know how old she is. Thought maybe I had alzheimer's or something until she read the card inside. We both got a good laugh over it. What had happened is I made it bigger than the pattern called for and thought I allowed for that when I bought the yarn but I ran out of yarn and couldn't finish it. I finally decided to pull some of it apart and redo it to the actual size it was suppose to be so I could finish it.

Juellie, yes my son knits, crochets and quilts. I taught him how to knit and crochet while he was in law school and visiting here at home during breaks, and he picked it up fast. He lives on the east coast and we live on the west coast, so he likes to while away the long flights with knitting, etc. He would meet with friends in a New York City coffee shop on Friday afternoons during his law school years to sip, chat and do needlework. He took classes in woodworking and quilting once he graduated, but he really does not have the time for such crafts with his long work hours and weeks these days.

The young man who owns the table cloth, which I remodeled to fit his table, was a fellow classmate in law school and a friend of one of my son's good friends. The kid was looking for a resource, and since he knew my son could crochet, asked if he could finish and repair the cloth.

I felt sorry for him. He was the only one in his family not tied down with children and career, so he was designated to go through his mother's things, save or dispose of them accordingly, and close up the house, all this while in law school. I lost my mother when I was 12, and so I felt a certain sympathy for him in his simple request to get her crocheted tablecloth repaired and remodeled so that he could use it. While I have crocheted a few tablecloths, I have never done anything like this, and I took longer than I should have because I was so afraid of ruining her work. Her stitches were tiny; the knots she used to tie off each motif impossible to locate and undo; the old, delicate cotton thread broke easily when I unraveled it; and I was overwhelmed with what I found myself volunteering to do. But it all worked out after years of worry and struggle, and so I am content.

And Sheilajoyce, that's awesome that your son is gifted with the craft! I envy both of you! I have all my mom's knitting & crochet stuff sitting here. Sure wish I would've had her teach me. Now I'm on my own to learn and I feel very overwhelmed, but would LOVE LOVE LOVE to be able to create stuff like she did!!

I will let you know. People who do not knit and crochet have no idea how many hours we put into a project. They cannot begin to understand. I did tell him that I had to start over after the thread I was using was discontinued and the 70 motifs completed already had discolored to a deep ivory/ecru. The cloth is in the mail and due to be delivered Tuesday. Before mailing it, I forwarded him the ipad picture that my husband took so that our son could see the completed project. This young man sent back a sweet, grateful email. My son sent an appreciative email too.

I wish I could figure out how to post the ipad picture for everyone to see.

Oh Sheilajoyce, please do post a picture as soon as you can. I've been checking back on this thread frequently to see if there was a photo. You have my deep admiration for your talent and great kindness.
