Kerdi vs. Redguard
Comments (8)Yes these two are just two of many shower membranes. They all work. Redgard is great and always has been. You never heard of either until two months ago. If you research a lot on the internet, you might find out about a number of products. Some are written about with fulsome praise in tones of awe. Some are just used by guys in the industry who don't spend time writing things on web sites. If you web search a lot you you might ask why you are can read so much about Kerdi and see it praised or respected everywhere on the web. I'll guess, based on my observations. The company behind this orange sheet membrane and another one too, is good at guerilla marketing which means getting it into the hands of professionals and getting it to be "respected" too. A massive amount of marketing pressure is made to get the orange membrane to be talked about highly. There are many ways of creating buzz and pressure to make it appear to be the best thing to use. They give free courses, and free material. It is given away behind the scenes as free product to the oldtimers at one famous and friendly tilesetting advice forum, but only if the oldtimers behave just right. Then, there are many ways to make you the firsttime public fear "trying" any other way. Misinformation is one way. So the more you read the more it can appear that Kerdi is the one and only thing. The alternatives (liquid-applied membranes and foam boards faced with fiberglas mesh and gray concrete) are real amateurs in terms of modern guerilla warfare. Kerdi is successfully marketed; so successful that it seems to be a standard when actually it is the experimental product that hasn't even gotten to the stage of being permitted in certain places. So, I hope this helps in understanding that everyone will always write about Kerdi with tones of awe in their writings, except for someone like me. I got tons of free product already, from sources linked to the guerilla marketing channels. What I really wanted was clear information. What really wanted was for them not to spread misinformation, fear and doubt about the other alternatives. That is what I respect most. A little less bribing and A little more restraint and honesty. Redgard is good. It always has been. Where you live, it is the best thing to use because the installers probably already know whatever they need to know, to use it to install a shower membrane properly. Learning another method is just a lot of effort for no gain. Redgard works. The other one works too. To be thorough, read Redgard's instructions, call the manufacturer's technical support people, and post again if you have questions. hope this helps...See MoreDown vs Down alternative?
Comments (14)I didn't care for my down comforter; it's in a space bag under the bed. It was always going flat in the middle and fat on the outsides, even though it had boxed channels. I was too warm under it most of the time. Try a silk comforter for the ultimate in luxury and perfect sleeping. My son swears by his and what I've seen of it (never slept under) I love it. Super light weight. Slumps down to conform to every curve of your body. He sleeps under it summer and winter. Only thing you can't do is pop it in the washing machine; that would ruin it....See MoreLet’s discuss tree safety vs shade.
Comments (61)"Husband said he likes the "golf course look." I guess he was talking about only the fairways since most golf courses have beautiful plantings on their courses. Sigh. They took down every old oak and large tree on their property destroying a beautiful woodland garden in half of their backyard area that was planted by the previous owner." And that kind of humancentric, bulldozer mentality is exactly what has killed off HALF of this planet's flora and fauna in just the past 40 years!!! Two million acres, an area the size of Yellowstone National Park, are lost to development each year We have converted 62,500 sq miles (40 million acres) to suburban lawn in the U.S. Because 54% of the U.S. is now in cities or suburbs, and 41% is in agriculture, biodiversity will have to survive in those areas if it is going to survive at all. 96% of all terrestrial birds rear their young on insects. No insects; no baby birds. 90% of all insects that eat plants require native plants to complete their development. So, here's more of the solution: Brad Lancaster's permaculture home in Tucson AZ "I learned the expensive way, by removing 30 100ft tall redwoods after they destroyed my pool, irrigation, and sewer pipes. But thankfully i got rid of them before the rotten ones fell on the school bus stop in front of my house. $50k cost was a wake up call." Or more simply, people just shouldn't be building their houses in the middle of a full-grown forest to begin with. Isn't the loss of 30 massive 100' trees, and all the wildlife they supported...the real wake-up call here?...See MoreCan we discuss passion and conformity?
Comments (31)In certain sense, I find it can be easier to behave courageously oh it can be scary and all. can be very scary. I went against groups in my life (and miraculously got away with it too. well that wasn't war situation either. no guns lol.) but I choose between two potential hard punishments here. I just knew that my inner punishment will be harder to bear I was conforming to my inner code. It'd be pretty unbearable otherwise But it's not like it appeared in vacuum.. I didn't invent it. I was taught it. I was taught it pretty strictly. Maybe I added to it and all, or tweaked it somehow. But it's not something original.. So in eyes of them who taught me-I'd be trespassing much more, and it's very heavy punishment. even if they don't see it. don't know it. even if they are dead. On the other hand, under other circumstances, when I think that others matter more, or that I matter less..or.. I can deliberately choose my inner punishment. if I think it's better for the cause. That'd be a longer story. I might seem non-conforming and all while doing that. I might seem pretty bad to outside observer. Won't be anything unique either. Plenty people seem like they make bad personal choices. Maybe they do indeed. Maybe they choose between bad choice and choice that would be worse. I also noticed. It can easier to act on behalf of somebody else. My inner compass is -hopefully-working allright. North is North and South is South when it's about me I'm less sure. (well it's also much easier to like somebody who's very far away. Harder to love them who surround you.)) the hardest is to like yourself. yourself, you know all too well. in discussions..I have certain rules. Which usually work. They're pretty much making-sense-rules. As my family put it, "rules of human co-existence".. Nothing original here either. It's not like I never get carried away-yet I try to adhere to them I might get carried away It might sound very harsh. My speech gets this clarity it usually lacks..)) Last time I got carried away I took myself out of the situation for several weeks. I was right by the way. I was completely right. If I say so myself. But I still felt bad. At certain point it mattered less that I was right.. I could feel that I was suddenly this unknown scary creature to my own friends. Took them time. To "recognize" me again So. I try to not get carried away. Ah..the thing that I figured out before..it wasn't about all that. It lied in a different plane.. it was something about passion And I knew that while to some it might look a passion, maybe enviable, maybe totally strange and unreasonable. To others it would be a completely understandable thing. It would depend on who's standing beneath these trees, looking up....See Morekateskouros
