New Finds Yesterday (pics)

This Saturday evening, we are ~ along with our close friends here in our village~ throwing a birthday party for a mutual friend here at our home. We ~ thankfully!~ managed to avoid a huge crush of people, many whom we wouldn't know, in favor of an intimate dinner party for eight! Anyhoo, yesterday I was out searching for a birthday gift and found some real bargains at a shop down in town that was having a huge sale on everything.

I found this beautiful Talavara covered casserole, usually $78.99, on sale for half off. $40 for a real, Talavara piece like this is a big score.

I may use it at the party this weekend, as I'm using my Talavara-inspired dishes. The napkin is not really faded, but only looks like it because of the flash. BTW, out here, and in Mexico, it's normal to use several different Talavara patterns together. I do try to keep the variety to a minimum for my own table, though!

And, while at the store there, I found these Western napkin rings marked down to only 72 cents each. I bought eight. They were originally priced at $4.99 each.

Autumn isn't the time to use my tropical glass napkin rings, so I may either use my bronze leaf ones or tie ribbons and tuck in small, real Maximillion sunflowers from my back garden for a napkin ring . . . if I can get all the tiny bugs off of them without wilting the flowers, that is! Several years ago, the Albuquerque Journal (newspaper) did a story on me and a couple other people who loved to cook gourmet meals. They sent a photographer here for a photo shoot in my kitchen. Just as he knocked on the door, I looked down at the Maximillion sunflowers I'd just cut and stuck in a rustic pitcher for extra color, and there were hundreds of tiny bugs crawling off of them and all over my counters! I've never brought them into the house again :~O

Anyhoo, I'm hoping to get my Johnny Appleseed table done and photographed before Saturday. I'm also hoping to get some pics of Saturday night's table for you all.

In the meantime, I'm a cleaning fool!

Wow, I do LOVE that casserole, it's magnificent. The napkin rings are great too.

I rarely bring things from outside indoors, because I worry about bugs. I would love to be able to, will someone share the secret for doing this.

The only thing I do use, is pinecones. I put them in the oven, and I've brought in fall leaves, and nuked them in paper towels to dry them. I figure any bugs or eggs would be nuked.

To begin with: I want those napkin rings. They'd go so well with my bandana dishware. Fork 'em over.

The Talavara piece is magnificent. I felt myself suck in some air as I scrolled down and it gradually came into view. Such a good price. You must be tickled about your purchase.

Rita, I love those planter boxes! Really love them, but that stone wall in front is to die for! I have a very nice slope like yours, but unfortunately, most of it is under a huge water Oak tree. That tree is the bane of my garden, but DH loves it...I keep hoping for a lightening strike or something. I would adore having some big rocks like those dug up on your place. I do have some space they would fit into, but I will have to settle for the rocks around the pond I imagine. I have been working outside all day again. Everything got sprayed with fungicide. The Knock Out roses behind the greenhouse are the only ones that still need cut back a little. I've been moving hard scape around, and I have to go back to Lowe's to get more. I need to put down some fresh mulch too. I got the cannas dug up, and the shrub that had gotten too large in the front is gone too. I rooted a piece of it since the hummers love it, but I will plant it far away from the day lillys since it an aggressive grower. I plan to plant three clematis tomorrow. Two of them are in buds. I decided to make my herb garden a pot garden, so that gives me more planting space. Well except for the clump of Rosemary...it's too big to be moving it around. Thanks to someone I know posting on the Cottage Garden forum, I went to the recommended website and ordered hummingbird mint and butterfly weed. I read the post after digging up the cannas, and hadn't decided what to put there. I have butterfly bushes, red hot pokers, and a dahlia or two in that bed, so I figure the new stuff will fit right in. I will have to make a little change in my nice rich bed that the hummingbird mint is going to, but that won't bee a huge thing. I just need to "lean up" the soil and improve the drainage which I will do at the same time. I planted a few trays of annual seeds today, and painted some of the garden fixtures (bench, plant stands etc...) but there is still a lot to do. DH is working a little along on the new pond project. The little existing pond is far too full of very large fish, so this expansion is well overdue. I still am not going to order a lot of daylillys or iris this year. But somehow, it seems as if there is still an awful lot of work to be done. I was looking at the stepping stones today, and the freezing and thawing this winter caused some heaving, so I will be doing a bit of work there too. kay

Many thanks for your thoughts on it! DH is actually on his was down to buy it right now. I so wanted to go along . . . so that I could show him a few other gorgeous pieces I like, but DD was taken ill last night while at our (22nd) annual Halloween dinner party. We had to leave early and she's still quite sick with a 102-degree fever today. I can't leave her alone, poor thing, so my planned antiquing date with DH is out :~ ( I'll post pics early next week when I get it accessorized, but don't expect anything close to one of My3dogs masterpieces. I need to get that gal out here for a visit (and let her loose on my place!) ;^P

#1 A baby/fledgling Great Horned Owl....the parents are nearby....probably in the trees....?...but maybe not in these trees. #2 A BIG frog....the size of my hand... ****************************************************************************************************** Sorry about the trash. This is a HUGE wildlife area with a trail next to the creek. The creek flooded a couple of years ago. When that happens peoples yards flood, trash cans are knocked over...... styrafoam hot tubs float away. :0)

NCnana: I'm right there with you about the bugs! I'm dying to bring in a bunch of my sunflowers for this evening, but am still trying to figure out a way to de-bug them! DD suggested Windex (LOL!)

OA, I bought the last they had or I'd go get some more and mail them to you. But, DH hasn't seen them yet. If they look too much like Texas or Texas Longhorn stuff (University of Oklahoma's arch rivals) to him, I may send you these. No offense meant towards any Texas people here . . . it's just a football rivelry thing (LOL!).

I once won the grand prize at a big Fall art event we went to locally. It was a handcarved and painted longhorn (cattle, not team) chair, made by a well New Mexico artist, and DH wanted me to let someone else have it! The chair ran almost $800, and I like it. It looks great in our Western guest room, where DH doesn't have to look at it every day ;^D . . . men and their footballs teams! Here's the chair BTW:

Loved reading your post. Bet you were surprised to see all the bugs at that moment when your ready for the shot. Most would understand that it's hard to get all the bugs out of our flowers before bringing them in. Love your Talavara covered casserole, margarita napkin ring is darling and so is the new western one.

So happy for you, winning a chair. I love to buy tickets but never get lucky. It looks like it goes well in your room but it wouldn't go well in our home but would fit in at the cabin.

OA, when I read your post reminded me of that saying hand over the chocolate and no one gets hurt. haha

The napkin rings are cute too..good for a western themed party..Hoe Down...:)

I plunge the flowers into a bucket of warm soapy water before I bring them in the house...does the trick for us here...

I love that brightly colored Talavara dish! I think I noticed some much smaller pieces of something similar at Ross. I'll have to look again the next time I go. How exciting to win that chair. My DH would want to sell it instead of giving it away! Ha!

Lynn, wonderful Talavara casserole! It looks so perfect for your table and I really like the Talavara inspsired plate you showed with the napkin too. I had to laugh that you said you went shopping for a birthday gift and then showed us all the "gifts" you found for you! Isn't it much easier to shop for ourselves? LOL! Did you end up finding a birthday gift?

That Talavera ( I didnt know what it was until I saw your pieces btw) is gorgeous - it would make a statement at any table setting. I love the star napkin rings you score - very very nice.

DD, yes, I found her a large, hammered silver colored, footed bowl. They're very involved in politics and entertain a lot at their home. I actually decorated their huge great room for them a couple of years ago. Anyhoo, I figured that they can always use large serving pieces. I have pics from the dinner party table I'm going to post later this morning for you all.
