Antique 'Find' Yesterday (Pics)

I met a girlfriend down in town yesterday for lunch and some serious antique hunting. While at our favorite store (Morningside), my friend found a gorgeous, rare, art pottery piece for her collection and I found this really unusual walnut humidor table from the Thirties. I've been looking for a replacement table for DH's side of the sofa for over a year now. Since he loves his cigars, I'm thinking that this might be the one. He likes it a lot. It's in great shape with all it's original hardware and came from the gentleman's study/library in one of the old mansions in town.

I've never seen anything like this before, have you? The inside compartment is completely lined with copper and his personal humidor will fit nicely there.

Here are some pics of it that I took there yesterday to show him. They're holding it for me until tomorrow. I may run down and pick it up today. BTW, the price was $285, but because my antiquing buddy is a good friend of the owners, they're letting me have it for $235.

Well, I'll be darned! I just googled antique humidor table and found this on on Ebay:
"Ebay table"
It's not nearly as nice as the one I'm considering buying, but it is a humidor table. I learned something new this week!

You guys are too kind. Thank you. Karin, I have had a terrible time trying to find the right plants for around that pond. I ended up with some tried and true southland plants. The background plants are nandinas. I have three big green phormiums, one to each side of the waterfall and one up against Mikey's office. There is a Giant Bird of Paradise and blue agaves that are far too large and out of scale for the size of the pond. Five phoenix roebellinis, one in a barrel with wire plant. Sword ferns are all around the waterfall, which has a gold duranta, some papyrus, and a Ming Asparagus fern behind it. There is one Wheeler's Dwarf pittosporum, a Sprenger asparagus fern in a pot and three on sticks, and some lilies, irises, and Louisiana irises planted here and there. There is variegated ivy on one side, and acorus here and there. I just planted three carexes, and there is some zoysia grass out there too. Whew. It's a dog's breakfast of plants! The zoysia is very slow growing, but it's pretty. I think that's the grass you like. No female dogs on the zoysia! Renee

Hi Fotograf, I am glad to see your sucessfull grafting techniques. I am going to try grafting this summer. I too have a large Meyer tree and I am going to root some cuttings and sell them on Craig's List. I also planned on doing some grafting myself. I just need to call my dad and have him come over and teach me. So you say the key is too graft when the tree is going to go thru a flush right? Does the root stock need to be flushing also? What kind of grafting have you had the most sucess with? How about soil. This is a huge debate here. I found that my dwarf key lime is not finicky at all. It seems to thrive in the Miracle Grow cactus and citrus soil. It cracks me up that the Miracle Grow company actually bags up this mix and claims that it is great for citrus. I repotted my Oro and found that Al's gritty mix is very effective in keeping the water away from the roots but it gives them t he necessary moisture they require. I have taken some horticultural classes but I focused more in landscaping when I wish I had focused more in horticulture. I loved botany but hated the technical end of the landscaping. So much I actually ended up dropping out. That was when I went to Longwood gardens. Spring is such a great time to visit. I would like to go back someday. What do you feed your trees? Wow..to have so many citrus you must have a huge greenhouse. That is my plan someday. I would love to move to Florida but I wont go until this citrus ban ends. There is no way in hell I would leave my trees behind or be forced to have them erradicated!! I love my citrus too much. Just like Mike I fell in love with the fragrance of the flowers and also the allure of watching my very own fruit grow and ripen. My first experience with a grafted tree was with a Calomondin. I loved watching that little tree grow but Iwas very dissapointed to pop one of those tiny oranges in my mouth and expect something sweet only to get a lemon flavor! Courtney, you are welcome...it's one of the reasons I decided to post them. It's so much more fun to show off the pretty stuff, but I myself suffer from "everyone else's garden always looks perfect." I do have oriental lilies in there, a few anyway, plus some echinacea (p. coneflowers), obedient plant (which I just pulled!), plus, the plant with the red spires (you can't hardly see them, but they are there!) is persicaria firetail. The persicaria is still pretty young, I'm hoping it's going to turn into a bushier plant. Dawn: The peonies are strictly a spring plant, but I love them! I usually have a fairly nice stand of larkspur and sometimes poppies. I ought to work them into this garden, it might be a good place for them. If nothing else, I'm going to concentrate on getting some mulch down on the paths and working on getting that grass out of there. I probably need to mulch at least with some newspaper and cotton compost in there too. I saw hummers the other day. I was so excited! I chased them around between the front and back yard but they were too quick for me! They seemed to be drawn to my vitex tree. Lisa Lisa

I have seen a humidor tables at auctions or in shops, but I think yours is the nicest I have seen. It has a lot of style. Good find! Sounds like a fun day!

Morningside Antiques has a great reputation in Albuquerque for selling the very best quality antiques and only those that can be authenticated. They're very trustworthy, which makes buying from them a safe bet. I'd loved to have found this piece on our local CL for $50, but we have mainly "junque" on it. I've searched it and Ebay for months now looking for the right table with no luck.

That is a very nice piece.

I'd snap it right up if I were you. Doubt that you could find anyting nicer for that price.

Hi Lynn. I have an antique smoking stand in our study. It has a copper lining and is a beautiful piece of furniture. My Mother bought it at an auction many years ago and I inherited it when she passed away.

I have a close girlfriend who bought one at an auction yrs. ago but not as nice as what you're looking at. Personally, for a lovely sm. side table, in exceptional condition it looks like, I would buy it. I don't think the price is bad either. Life is too short to worry and wait to see if you can find something prettier or less costly!

I see humidor tables regularly on our CL and in antique shops, but they're generally very plain and not in great shape. I think yours is gorgeous and if it fits the space where you'd put it, I'd snap it up! Great find!!!

It fabulous!

And while I'm normally really cheap a bargain-hunter, there are some pieces that are so wonderful and special that getting a bargain just doesn't matter. These are the pieces that stick in your head and that you really regret not buying if you pass them up. Don't let that happen with this table!

By now, I hope you'll have already run back to the store to grab it --

Proves that it pays to wait til the right piece comes along. I've been looking for the right night tables.
I know I need to be patient, but it's difficult to do when you have a whole new house to furnish.

Many thanks for your thoughts on it! DH is actually on his was down to buy it right now. I so wanted to go along . . . so that I could show him a few other gorgeous pieces I like, but DD was taken ill last night while at our (22nd) annual Halloween dinner party. We had to leave early and she's still quite sick with a 102-degree fever today. I can't leave her alone, poor thing, so my planned antiquing date with DH is out :~ (
I'll post pics early next week when I get it accessorized, but don't expect anything close to one of My3dogs masterpieces. I need to get that gal out here for a visit (and let her loose on my place!) ;^P

What a lovely piece. I hope you got it. I think the price is pretty amazing too for an antique store. The stores in our area are really overpriced and many items are not in such good condition as what I can find on our CL.
