Please Weigh In on Refrigerator Option - Thermador vs. Kenmore/KA

Sounds like a no brainer, right? Here's the situation:

We downsized the entire house due to the current mortgage crisis. The appliance budget shrunk accordingly. So we had only planned on putting in a regular full depth (just not enough room in those counter depth ones) side by side refrigerator. We were leaning heavily toward the Kenmore Elite 26.5 cuft. or the KA 26.5 cuft.

Yesterday, I stumbled across someone selling a brand new never installed 2009 48" Thermador side by side at a huge loss putting it in the price range of the regular refrigerators we're looking at. It's out of the box, but all the packing and plastic is still on it. They said they bought it for their kitchen reno but it didn't end up fitting and they had to go with a 42" instead.

The only drawbacks I see:

- No warranty

- I have to go pick it up (~500 miles)

- Being a built in, its counter depth (how much of an issue does the shallow depth become when the refrigerator is 48" wide vs. 30"-36" wide?)

- The planned adjacent cabinet will shrink from 36" to 24" wide

- If & when I have to replace it I am pretty much locked into another super-expensive built in that I may not be able to find such a good deal on again.

Am I missing anything? What would you do?

I can't comment on the Thermador, but we just installed a SS Kenmore elite french door/bottom freezer that we like alot. The cubic feet is approximately the same. It is made by LG. Aside from when the ice maker refills 1-2 times a day, it is virtually silent (and we have an open concept home with tile floors so we would hear it :)

Picking up and moving a 48" built-in is not trivial. You do not mention the model number of the fridge in your post, but I would not be surprised if it weighs 700 pounds. So you will need some kind of moving truck with a ramp or liftgate and plenty of help to get the thing moved, or you will need to freight it, heavily insured, to your house. Those costs will not be insignificant no matter what. Just the gas for the truck will be an appreciable expense.

But there is no question that the interior room of the fridge will be better than a 36" standard depth. While you are giving up depth in the cavity, you are substituting an additional foot of storage with noticeable increases in both refrigerator and freezer capacity. Everything is easier to get to in a 48" and the aesthetics of the built-in vs. the standard depth 36" are simply not in the same ballpark in my estimation. You get a much more trim and finished look with a built-in and your kitchen will be greatly enhanced in appearance and "show-appeal" with the Thermador.

So the question is what would I do? I'd go get the Thermador in a heartbeat. Had there been any 48" fridge with the dispenser quality of my LG on the market at the time we did our reno, I would have one now. I much prefer the wider presentation of the storage in a large built-in over having to reach over things like you have to do in a standard depth fridge. About the only thing I would be cautious over would be the lack of a warranty. But I am pretty handy and a decent diagnostician when it comes to appliances so it is less of a worry for me than it would be for someone who must always rely on service companies. Still, overall, I would shoot for moon and get the best you can get for the least amount of money because, well, that is just the way I am wired. I can't imagine this helps too much since your circumstances are markedly different, but I do wish you the best of luck with your decision and hope you will report back on what you decide and how it all works out.

Sounds like you made a very good choice. I'm facing the same situation; Monogram, or Thermadore Pkg. I'm looking at the 36" BI French Pantry Door Fridge, Elec/Conv. Wall Oven and Advantium, or speed oven/micro comb Thermadore has and the 36" Induction cooktop. Very hard to decide which pkg. is better. I'm leaning towards the Thermadore, but I didn't like the Oven, Speed Oven/Micro combination as one has turn knobs and the speed oven is touch screen??? So wierd on that level of appliances they wouldn't match the controls since one sits just above the other. In the GE Monogram, the BI refrigerator didn't seem to have the best use of space with the 1 long slide out drawer amd 2 small crispers and not as many option to move door shelves vs 2 long slide out drawers on the Thermadore. We need the BI refrigerator due to small kitchen walkways, but I'm a bit concerned about reaching the top shelf on the BI refrigerators as I'm 5'3". I can reach the front of the shelf, but not the back??? Has anyone vertically challenged as I had a problem with the height of the 36" French Door Thermadore/GE Monogram BI??? I'm hearing Thermadore's pricing is going up by 7% February 1st!

I hope so, xedos. This was definitely a first-world issue, no question, but ouch. We had many issues with the cabinet designer. But back in 2003 when the kitchen was planned there were basically 2 high end built in options -- SZ and Viking. Also Monogram. My cabinet dimensions were standard for both at the time. Cannot fault the fit on this really. Instructions said a 25" cabinet would allow it to fit flush. But having seen the design of the frame, which is about 36-1/4 or so to cover the cut out, I don't see how that would work.What's interesting is that the Miele door is much slimmer than the SZ. It doesn't protrude as much. And having the grill hidden on the bottom makes a difference in the look -- at least for me. It's very neat. I spoke to the dealer about the water filter. When the time comes, I spend $60 on a bypass. End of story. We have a very good water filter on our well pump so it's not needed on the fridge.

The high end is 22K BTUs-pretty close to Capital. This is the rating for the heat output, nothing to do with open or closed. The low end is 375 BTUs. We don't know what Capital has for that. I am sure everyone knows what I sell. What I sell does not detract from the fact that open burners outperform sealed burners. The difference between open and sealed burners is significant nothing nominal about it. We tested a wolf range with caps on and caps off using same pan same water side by side at the same time, the burner with caps off boiled water over 23% fast..... that is significant Here is the video. Outperform would be a mischaracterization of this "test". I see performance as more multidimensional than putting the most heat in the center of a pan. If you had a wider pan, or changed the metal it was made of, or what you are cooking, your results would be different. This falls under the category of showmanship rather than anything scientific. How can you say this-"the burner with caps off boiled water over 23% fast."without any supporting data? You are right it is not how big the burners are but how the burner delivers heat to the CENTER of the pan, so the base of the pan gets evenly hot. Sealed burner send vast majority of the heat to the outside of the pan, open burners send the heat to the center of the pan. Please explain using the principals of heat transfer how delivering heat to the center of a pan is allowing the base of the pan to get evenly hot. If you have a ring of heat on the bottom of the pan, heat will travel in both directions from that ring to heat the pan. The center will receive heat from more directions and heat quicker, until it comes to equilibrium, than the outside so it is optimum to have a ring with the maximum heat more towards the outside of the pan than the inside. It is much harder to get heat to the part of the pan outside of the ring. A sealed ring burner flame pattern is only slightly wider than an open ring burner, a little more if you have it wide open. If you use a pan with reasonably good heat transfer like copper or aluminum, the burner shape doesn't really matter as much, but I wouldn't want the heat in the middle of the pan. The only way I would see heat in the middle of a pan as a benefit is if I were using a very small pan or a wok. I use everything from a 7 inch pan to make caramel with no stirring to a 14 inch aluminum pan on my sealed burners. For any pan less than 7 inches, I have a "small pan burner" I can make fried potatoes in that 14 inch pan with even color all the way across. I use cast iron if I need a lot of heat as in searing meat.

Yes! We got it sorred out. So it turned out to be a loose circuit breaker. It was the new sub panel put in for our kitchen reno. We had some electrical work done and hired an electrician tonadd some recessed lighting. He ran it back to the new subpanel and he comes up from the basement nd asks if we were having problems with the stove. I said yes. He said he noticed the breaker wasnt seated properly. It was making a connection but just barely. He popped it out and popped it back in and sure enough I went and ran that oven at 500 for an hour with no issues. The cause imo was the weak current was causing the computer to think there was a fan issue. An anomaly. Want to say we have since moved and it was a relief to be able to have that taken care of. I will buy Thermdor again! They did send us a new range (after repeated service calls). So would so donit again

MCMesprit-Thanks for your input on the Kenmore elite. We like the features & looks of the Kenmore a little more so than those of the KA. Love the handles on the Kenmore too!

Mojavean-Yes, it's the 700 lb fridge. I asked DH when I found out about it if he'd rather have it shipped (estimated ~$1,100.00--still a steal at that price) or go pick it up and he suprised me & said for that amount of money, we'll go pick it up. I'm guessing he's thinking we'll drive there in our car then rent a truck in the town where it is & drive it back. Then we're only paying for the truck's gas one way. DH is also good at troubleshooting & repairing, but I worry on these higher end appliances. It sounds like you & I are similarly wired when it comes to shooting for & buying the moon for the least amount of $$--hence the post. Thanks so much for sharing your view.

Anyone else have any thoughts?
