Need Help Selecting Tile for Powder Room Remodel

I have been carrying around a color scheme in my head for months, and I really want black tiles. However, when I went shopping for black tiles, I found that most "blacks" were just dark grays. Someone suggested that I consider a different material -- slate -- as there is a real black, but I understand that is not as durable as porcelain or ceramic and needs more maintenance, so I'm not interested.

I've narrowed down the samples to two shades. One is the darkest gray that I found and the other has actual black color splashes (but a bit motley). I have a slight preference for the dark gray, but I'm concern that it would not look good against the brown/reddish tones in my new vanity, which is a "merlot" color. Am I over-thinking this? Please see the pics below and share your thoughts. (My vanity top will = black galaxy granite.)

Have you looked at Crossville? Of the two in your pictures, I prefer the darker one with the cabinet.

I really like your vanity. I like the uniformity of the grey. It seems to let the vanity speak for itself.

Thanks everyone for the help. gk5040, yes the painter is reskimming the walls. I did consider faux painting the walls and would do that if we weren't planning on moving. That would be my first choice. What sort of faux finish did you have in mind? Lindybarts, the flecks in the capri limestone are kind of gold and bronze, no green. The cabinet is a dark cherry. Unfortunately I don't have a pic and my husband has the camera with him today. I considered doing a green, but didn't know if that was "neutral" enough for selling a home. We want to move, but are kind of having second thoughts about it considering the housing market. Thanks again for the suggestions. Thanks for your help. I love the godmorgan sink for their clever plumbing moving the ptrap to the back so that you can have drawers. I got one but my plumber threw up all over it for the cheap quality of the plastic in the plumbing. He did agree about the design and is building ours with the ptrap in the back so that we can do drawers using better quality stock parts. Mirrors.. I would suggest picking this first as this will drive much tile you need. Have you looked at IKEA mirrors. They are a good price point. Also home goods etc.. Faucet.. Online prices are much better.. Do you like the look of the faucet in the picture? I went with a simple version from a good quality brand for my regular bathrooms with a single lever. For powder room, I also wanted it to be fun and did wall mounted in antique copper.

I really like the wallpaper and the bead board. For a counter, perhaps consider wood - butcher block or just planks of pine or something. It will bring an amazing amount of warmth to your space. I did it for my kitchen counter when I reno'd 8 years ago and never tired of it or regretted it. It's cheaper than most other options, biodegradable when someone else reno's and it goes into a landfill, easily refinished if it needed at some point, and gives you some sink flexibility. I really like square or rectangular sinks better than round/oval. And I think that's probably easier to cut/fit than other shapes. And can undermount it. Those vessel sinks look nice, but they become so high that they are less user friendly unless you build/alter your cabinet to be lower height than normal... If you get your hubby to agree to doing the floor, I'd choose wood there too. No grout lines to clean. Washes up easily. Different if you have a bath/shower in there... Oh, and I think for a small space like that, pretty economical too... Just doing go with the engineered stuff - no where near as durable or attractive.

I assume you're asking about these tiles for the floor, am I right? I like the charcoal. Black galaxy (honed or polished?) has a bit of pattern and sparkle to it which I think would be too much with a mottled floor tile. Btw, a shiny black granite will most likely show finger prints and smudges. And in my area with hard water, it would show water marks too. In the kitchen, one wipes up standing water more than in the bathroom.

What are you planning for wall color? Maybe a cool, fresh, light gray? Can't wait to see it all done!

Thanks for the replies. I finally found a real solid black but in a odd size -- Daltile has an unpolished (not shiny) jet black tile in 24"x12" size. I was so happy, but then I see you replies about how the charcoal looks good. Now I'm doubting myself. :(

The vanity top will be black galaxy polished, and the wall color I'm aiming for a warm gold. Here is a pic of the design that inspired this remodel: http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/article/0,3140,HPRO_28216_6027344_10,00.html. I'm going for that similar wall color. This pic has charcoal floor tiles, but then it has a black cabinet.
