Mortise vs. Tubular - Mortise worth it?
Comments (6)The weak point is normally the door stile attachment to the rest of the door structure. The large cutout for a mortise lock does NOT help, ad increase the leverage available to simply split the stile from the door rails. You can armor up the strike side as much as you want, but unless you get a decent strength metal door (and not the ones with the sheet metal face) the door is going to simply split. A metal door in a metal jamb in a masonry opening is about as good as it gets. Especially if the jamb is then grouted to have no clearance to the wall structure it is in. Without the grouting the jamb can be spring wider and the door opened. In wood frame structures all the screws (hinge and lock strike) need to be long enough to reach into solid framing by a few inches (screw lengths quickly get up to 3 to 4 inches). Just keep in mind that windows are often an easier target....See MoreProblems with ThermaTru entry door
Comments (144)I bought a very expensive Therna Tru front door with frosted side windows and the finish started to disintegrate on the door. That is because the sun hits it in the mornings and the finish just did not hold up and began to disintegrate and come off. First contacted Lowe's who I bought the door through and Lowe's passed me off to Therma Tru. Contacted Therma Tru and it started to weasel out of any responsibility on its 10 year warranty and gave me a hard time. I assume Therma Tru has had other problems with its wood look finish disintegrating. i am going to keep posting wherever and whenever I can about how Therma Tru does not honor its 10-year warranty on its expensive front doors. I am a service-connected totally disabled homebound Marine Corps veteran who paid over $5,000 for the Therma Tru front door. Bought it along with Pella windows through Lowe's on North Shådeland Avenue In Indianapolis Indiana, Richard Bovey Indianapolis Indiana...See MoreHelp me choose a front door handle! Comments (7)Those selections won't work for your front door. Those are interior door knobs/levers. You need a lockset for the front door and you have to know whether you want a mortise or tubular set. If you take close up pictures of your current door, lock, and the jamb, a local hardware place would be able to tell you what you need....See MoreWould you update this entry door?
Comments (59)@ci_lantro it would have been wise to consider changing out that half round. However, the front windows were replaced (minus the half round because it's still in good shape) about 8 yrs ago. This siding project is set to start the end of this month. We recently ordered some windows for the back of the home and the price had DOUBLED in the 8 years since we replaced the front windows. We wouldn't have enough time to order the transom at this point and we're probably at the point of "good enough". Hindsight is 20/20. There are things I would have done differently if I had a do-over button (window grid patterns etc. - I didn't know at the time that we could customize the grids in the windows we were getting and the installer didn't ask what we wanted). I've learned a lot in 8 yrs. Maybe these half round windows will come back? Yeah, probably not!...See MoreRelated Professionals
