Anyone familiar w/the Kohler Hourglass tub?

So I discovered Kohler does indeed make a 30" wide tub in acrylic, called the "Hourglass", K-1510-x. It's actually a drop-in style with an optional "apron" to make it into a three-wall alcove type. This doesn't strike me as the most stable of arrangements. Does anyone have any familiarity with this tub or any three wall installation where the apron came separately?

I'm about to install one this weekend. I got the K1219 (32x60). What questions do you have exactly? Is it just the stability? If so, then it's a pretty solid looking tub from what I can tell. I'm going to be building a front apron and covering with tile. Let me know what questions you have and hopefully I can answer.

I am pretty ignorant as to how the optional apron attaches to the main tub, and how sturdy that connection is. I also wondered if having it in two pieces would change the "flex" properties of the tub, since it seems like the rigidity might not be the same. I saw a complaint online about an American Std tub that "popped" when filled with water as part of the tub flexed out, or something to that effect. Overall I guess I just didn't quite know what I'd better getting myself in for if I bought that instead of a regular alcove tub. Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Wow, thanks bumble doodle! Tt is great to know that the tub works well as a shower. We are tall too--at least most of us (two of my teenage daughters are twins and one is 5'2" and the other is 5'10", so maybe the short one complains a bit but that's ok, since she complains about everything!) We are getting the non-jetted version. Also, I am hoping that building the deck at the front will help with the water spray. I am pushing the tub back into an alcove under the window the long way (so we get into the tub at the 32" side rather than from the 48" side) and we are trying to go without shower doors in order to make the bath feel open. With a deck, we buy a few more inches of length to help avoid water on the floor. We may not succeed and will put a panel on if we have to. Any thoughts on this?

It appears that they still offer the 60 x 32 with the ledges that they call armrests but someone here who has one calls "finger rests", as well as this new one that leaves those out to stay 30" wide. Personally, I'm really happy to see the new version, although I know nothing about the material, since that extra two inches would have been a big problem for me in a small bathroom. Now I don't have to worry about moving the toilet over to stay within code. I'd love to know more about the material, too. I think the bevel means the top outer edge of the tub, not the ledge inside, so the new one would be beveled, too.

You know it is funny. While I was remodeling my bathroom last year a friend started hers. She had a BIG tub with this big tub deck - she couldn't wait to ditch the tub and deck b/c she called the xcess deck wasted space. Based on this, I too went with a mariposa and love it! I have maybe 4inches tub deck on the right and left and a little bit more in the back but I wouldn't want to waste floor space with much more. It suited me fine - comfortable tub - in a deck - I did built in shelving behind the tub to store decor, rolled towels, soaps etc. so my tub deck is clear with just a candle in the one corner. I like the clean open space...

I love my tub. It feels very solid, but it was installed on a mortar base per the manufacturer's installation instructions. You can do a search for Kohler 5' archer and open the manufacturer's website link. They have a file you can download that has complete installation instructions and complete specs. It does have some sort of nonskid texture on the bottom of the tub. It is very comfortable to me. Mine is the whirlpool with the in-line heater. I don't have any regrets with my choice. Something I really like is the horizontal overflow. That allows for more water depth, yet the step over height is only 19 inches.

Hi.

I can't really help as to how the apron is connected but I can tell you that the apron probably won't be a structural component that adds flex resistance to the tub. My tub (apronless) has support legs on the underside and I would imagine that the ones with seperate apron do too. These aren't like the old steel tubs that are supported by the apron on one side and the tub lip on the other side with no feet underneath.
