Are you talking about tiling the face of an enamel sided tub?

No Bill, I was going to buy a tub that's made for this application without an apron. I would need something built to be the apron that tiles can be applied to, continuing up from the floor. It wouldn't protrude hopefully more than the rim of the tub, as space is tight.

On my other post, the limestone I was thinking of was Jurastone Blue-Gray. I think that's one of the harder, denser limestone similar in those respects to travertine. Would you know if that's correct. I'm going to mix up some haircolor and see how badly the samples stain. Would you know the name of the best sealer for that stone, so I can try and get a sample.

It is not too uncommon. I am planning something similar. Can't help with the costs yet, but you do save by ordering the tub apronless. I think mine was $150 less. I got the Kohler Synchrony.

Yes, that's exactly what I had wanted to do. Thanks for the link! My toilet is in the same place too. Not much room to build anything out. That's also the same tub I wanted, but I hadn't realized air jet tubs were that high. It's too high for me as I take mostly showers.

Hopefully Bill will let us know how much something like that runs, and what's involved in building it.

Do you mean the tub pictured is the one you wanted or the Synchrony? The Synchrony is designed for a tub/shower situation. It is not too tall. It may be too wide for your needs though at 42".

I am just having the tiling on my new BR done. I did the same as you as talking about. It is not finished yet. I used a Jason, 60 X 32 X 20.5 soaking tub. I will have a grab bar on the left side to assist with getting in and out.

Sorry I do not know the cost, it was figured in with the total cost of the tile and installation. I could check with my contractor if that would be of any help to you. I am in San Jose, CA

Framing has to be installed so as to be back from the face the 1/2" thickness of the cement board, and then the thickness of the tile plus about 1/16" for thinset. I'd figure somewhere in the vicinity of about 500.00 plus materials.

Bill, that sounds fair enough. I think doing that gives a higher end look to the bathroom. I just can't find any stylish tubs with nice porcelain aprons in the smaller 32" X 60" size. Thanks!

Wow, $500 extra for the apron is not what I paid ! I live in Southern California and was quoted $1,000 for the whole tub/shower combo job.

I have a tile front apron tub but I chose the Kohler Hourglass tub which is 60 x 32 x 20 for the 3-wall alcove install and the grandkids love it.

The apron is tiled with 1x1 green glass mosaic from Lowe's and the rest is white subways run vertically for a modern twist. I also ran the green glass mosaic around every corner like a picture frame and cut one wall down to a 4 ft. pony wall. I still need to have a glass splash wall installed to allow more light into the tiny secondary bath.

I love the posted pictures of the gorgeous tiled apron front tubs ! They look so custom and much prettier than the ordinary solid surface tubs with no personality.

leslie-- there's a HUGE difference between including it in a project, and that apron BEING the project. Then on top of that, she's in NYC, and the estimate I gave was actually conservative in light of that. That's IF she can get someone to come out for just that, other than a handyman.

Bill, my mistake !
I forgot to take into consideration that a tile contractor would charge a minimum fee for his time to simply tile an apron which is why my tile contractor simply charged me for the whole job at such a value.

The extra charges were for my plumber who took charge of removing the old tub and setting the new tub after moving some pipes. The plumber corrected some of my contractor's mistake because the tub drain pipe location and drain height changed and the contractor left it off center.

Pipe reconfiguration with new ceiling shower, handheld shower, diverter, moving vent pipe due to 4 ft pony wall, and finally resetting the tub cost me $800 in plumber costs.

Can you please post pictures of your bath, as , if I ever get around to doing my other bathroom, I'm using that tub in an alcove installation also . I'd also like to tile the apron.

I will post pics of the unfinished kiddie bath which has not been painted yet this weekend. I remodeled the bath for my mom and the kiddie's great-grandma. I found the coolest green glass accent with a double or single vanity at Costco (of all places) called New Waves Bali but my mom refused my offer as it is too modern or Asian for her.
