help with bathroom window treatments

I am stuck on window treatments and what color for my bathroom windows. I have one long window over the tub and a shorter window on another wall. I will need privacy especially with the window over the tub. It is a nice size bathroom. I have white wainscotting and the walls above are a warm blue. Oak trim and floors. the tile around the tub is stone or a taupe shade with blues in it.

I like the looks of roman shades(I would have to keep it closed all the time)I am not sure if you can see in with vertical blinds.I also come across window films to put on windows cant find one that i like. Other question is what color? I like taupe or stone, not sure if that would be to dark.Not sure what to do??

We have a good sized window in our bathroom and I just used white wood looking blinds so we'd have easy and multiple options for lighting. I plan on eventually putting a valance of some sort at the top to fancy them up a tad but they look ok as is so it's not a priority on our long list of things to do.

I'd highly recommend those or maybe shutters just simply because they offer the most options between lighting and privacy.

If you have white wainscotting and oak trim and floors, I would hesitate to go with a taupe or stone color because in my mind oak is naturally more on the yellow side of things while taupe or stone would be more blueish. I know you said you have blue walls...but the way I imagine it doesn't look right. White or just barely off-white, in my opinion would look better, although without a picture I can't say for certain. And, for the record, taupe is my favorite neutral, so it's not because I don't like the color!

I think roman shades are the way to go here. Would the smaller window look silly with roman shades (is it too small)? You could also think about cordless honeycomb shades, which would let in the most light.I don't like those window films - I think if people look in they can still see through them somewhat.

If you want the see-out-but-not-see-in effect, for daytime use look at mirrored window films. If you go that route and that will be the only treatment used, mirrored films give privacy to the side of the film that is darker. Typically in the day time people won't be able to see in, but at night when your bathroom is lit up and it's dark outside, the effect is reversed...you won't be able to see out but people outside can see in. So while that type of film is good for daytime, you'll need to couple it with a curtain or blind for night time. Or you can go the route of a frosted film. You'll retain some light transmission, but lose the view. There are numerous styles of frosted films, and the amount of light they allow to transmiss does vary. There are stained glass films too if you want to go decorative. That aside, for window shades, I like top-down-bottom-up for any actual window shade. If you're not familiar, with those shades you can lower it from the top (usually most effective in a bathroom), or raise it from the bottom, or both. If you can lose a little of the view and natural light during the day, then go with just a T-D-B-U shade. If you want to preserve the entire view, your best bet will be to use a reflective film. That'll give you privacy in the day. Couple it with a shade for night time use. If the view isn't important and you prefer to not have a window shade, than a frosted or semi-opaque film could be used. Color recomendations, I'll leave that up to the stylists.

I do no think curtains are appropriate in a bathroom, although it could depend on the space. I like drapes in some rooms, although I also know they can "harbor" dust/mites/allergens regardless of what you do. (When I walk through homes with curtains in the bathroom, it does gross me out a bit.) Because our window is behind the tub/hard to reach and we don't have a pretty view out the bathrooms, we got frosted window glass. There is pretty natural light that comes through constantly, but we have privacy.

I did curtains that were shirred top and bottom on two tension rods several years ago. The top third of the windows remained uncovered and we were happy with them for a number of years. When the area became more populated and less private I installed woven wood blinds and we had the two corner windows over the tub treated for light and privacy so we can have them open during the day. We're very pleased with the current set up. It's amazing that you really cannot see into the windows during the day, even close to the window, but from the inside everything is crystal clear. We have the view during the day and close the blinds in the evening.

We used Hunter Douglas Designer Screen Shades; Roman shade style, in two bathrooms. Depending on the "fabric" you choose, the different weaves allow in more or less light (and therefore privacy levels). You can "up" the privacy level by installing a flat roll-up shade or micro-pleat shade behind the Roman shade.

Why not think about opaque bottom up shades/blinds? you could raise them only as far as needed for privacy and still have light coming in on the top part of the window. These blinds also allow lots of light but can be totally opaque when closed:

My windows are 26 by 48 and 26 by 65(this is the one above the tub) People have made alot of compliments on my bathroom and no the oak is not yellow. Thanks for your responses. Still stuck on color. I use to think there was a rule of thumb for curtain color(blend with walls and lighter color than the floor) I dont know if that is true or not.

What if you go with a light taupe color? It would look good with the blue walls but wouldn't be such a shock with the white wainscoting. Something like Satin Stripe in Smoky Topaz from Hunter Douglas Vignette modern roman shades...or maybe something lighter? They have a design thing on that site that lets you play with colors. That may help you. I started messing with it because of olychick's link. Total timesink! ;)
