What did you do?

Hi guys. I thought I had chosen everything that there was to choose. Then DH asks me about the doorbell. Our system is wired, so that's not the question. Looks can be modified; also not the question (okay, but you know how we all love pictures, so if you did something creative, please post pics!) The problem is that I *hate* the sounds that they have at HD and Lowes (my only local options).

So, what cool products did you find? What online sources are out there? Anything that can be programmed? Anything to specifically avoid? Brag about your finds!

ugh! I totally agree. I ended up getting one at Lowes that will be changed out if someone has a better option. I also wasn't cracked up about the actual push button options either.

At either HD or Lowes, we got a Heath/Zenith that has 64 choices of songs or tones. For the front door we chose the French national anthem (DH didn't know that's what it was when he picked it), and for the daughter/grandkids door by the garage (they live with us, so this is for their friends), we chose the March of the Toy Soldiers. It only plays the first 18 notes of each song, so at least these weren't interrupted mid-stanza! Some songs just sounded better in "tones" than others.

We didn't put in a tiled or granite backsplash b/c we postponed it due to budget (plus I didn't know what I wanted). We just painted w/a scrubbable paint (BM Cornsilk). However, be sure you tell the templater that you will not have a backsplash...and keep telling him/her! Otherwise, they'll assume they don't have do that good a job of templating along the wall b/c they'll think the tile will hide it. Oh, and put it in writing! Even though I was very explicit and they had our design with NO backsplash, they still gave me a gap that was big enough to push my fingers in up to my knuckles...I refused to sign off until they fixed it. I now have a fairly small gap that black silicone (or is it caulk?) hides very well and also keeps water (and crumbs) from falling behind the counters. I have a black counter, so the black is perfect. There is one run that has clear and we tried painting over, but the paint doesn't "stick"...so make sure they use something that either already matches your counter or wall or that can be painted.

We had just moved into the house we're in now two days before...I spent the day in our pool just lounging...and taking a day off from unpacking boxes...We went out to dinner that night...My kids had gotten me a huge glass mug that said..."How the hell did 50 sneak up on me?"...I drank my usual sweet tea from it!! (and then passed it on to another family member who turned 50 the next year and it keeps getting passed around now!)

Thanksgiving prep, what did you do so far?

I'm keeping Thanksgiving low key this year. Thursday meal will be just me, DH and our daughter. They have simple tastes so no need to go overboard. Frozen turkey has almost defrosted after being in frig four days, so that's good to roast tomorrow. Bought a bag of cranberries today. We will have turkey, gravy, cornbread, baked potatoes, broccoli (plain steamed), and cranberry sauce. Daughter might make us a pecan pie when she arrives tomorrow. We're already planning a turkey soup & sandwich leftover meal with the rest of my family here in town, and then with DH's family a few hours south. Today I bought a frozen turkey breast to ensure we have enough leftovers to share :-)

Grandson and girlfriend came over and trimmed my hideous tree (another long story that I'm repressing...oh well...). They then set the table for my Monday night family dinner, and then Henry polished the last few pieces of silver that my yard man ran out of time to do. Put the tureen for the centerpiece in my car. I took that to the florist. So, everything is almost ready for Monday night. I need to put the small things that are on trays (to make dusting easier for cleaner) back on the tables, and then I'm ready. Smartest thing I ever did was to hire someone to cook and serve the meal. It's something I've had before that she does (braised short ribs - fabulous!) and know it's good. It will not be a "fancy" meal - just using placemats and all but the sterling flatware and goblets can go in the dishwasher once a year (Wedgwood "Wild Strawberry"). The table still looks festive and pretty and it will be easy and not anywhere nearly as expensive as my usual party. Just a nice family mean. No coats and ties required but I"m hoping for a sweater and not a hoody... We will see..

we didn't like how any of them looked. But it didn't really matter in the end, since we decided to put the boxes in the mudroom and laundry since they're near the stairs, so we could hear them no matter which floor we were on.

We chose the white/cream plastic boxes, since originally we'd thought one would go in the foyer. We'd decided to put it in an unobtrusive location there, and wanted it to blend in.

I'm planning to put a vintage Victorian mechanical one in the front door. I'd like to hide a video camera to watch people try to figure out how to work it!

Thanks for the input Anne, trudymom, and flgargoyle! I'll have to look into that Zenith. Now c'mon guys, I know that there are more options out there. And you are some of the most savvy folks I know! What's the scoop?

We're doing the same thing flgargoyle is doing - I already have the doorbell and I'm just crazy about it - but I didn't think about the camera!! What a great idea!! :-)

No one has had a problem figuring it out. And it works even when there's no electricity.
