54' vanity actually 54.25'! who does that?!

I stumbled onto these forums when I was looking for a solution to my problem, seems like there's some knowledgeable people who are actually active on this forum so I figured i'd give it a shot.

I'm currently remodeling my small master bath and am replacing the 54" vanity that was there with a floating 54" double sink vanity. I bought the new vanity months ago and just got to putting it in. Upon measuring, it turns out that the advertised "54 inch" vanity i bought is actually 54.25". It's a VERY tight 54" space between the 2 walls as it is so how do I get another 1/4"? I don't mind recessing the vanity top into the wall and sacrificing 1/4" of counter space but the vanity base can't be recessed or the door on the recessed side won't open properly. I am looking into using 1/4" drywall from the top of the vanity top down and ramming it in there but then i run into the issue of how to transition from the 1/2" drywall above the vanity to the 1/4" drywall below it.

suggestions? would pictures help?

man...that thought had crossed my mind but really didn't want to have to rip that all up..just finished seaming and mudding the new drywall there...bleh

My total packet bet is 7979.43 by the law of average, should be right on the button. Now while we wait can we talk about my poor pumpkin seeds that were so fresh when I sent them, I mean I was still turning them every hour in the sun coming thru my french doors,before bagging them. Anyway, today, to my horror, the Musque de Provence seeds were moldy green!!!!I did not figure tha tthe time from when I packed them and the time we will get our seeds back would be enough to mold them, as I din't want to treat them with chemicals or bleach but maybe I should have!!! Looked on line for answers , someone mentioned rinsing the seeds in hydrogen peroxide before drying them. I panicked and use what was close at hand , put some bleach in water and filled the little baggie with it and slooshed them around until they cleaned up a bit, then i rinsed them further with my fingers, and planted them in a peat pot to see about germination. I don't know what to tell you. It's really sad to loose these, they were beautiful pumpkins, of the brightest orange flesh. If they are really lost then I will have to make sure mine grows and distribute the seeds again thru another swap.I am so sorry about that, thought i was doing the seeds a favor by not using bleach or other chemicals...and look what happened. I agree with foodonastump, the USDA mypyramid guidelines are research based, and guidelines for servings from different food groups that will provide a healthy diet for most people. Adults should aim to get 2 cups of fruit and 3 cups of veggies each day. Sounds like a lot, but it's not if you make the effort to include fruits and/or veggies at each meal or snack. We (or much of the US population) sure eat lots of other stuff each day - snack foods, fast foods, desserts, drinks, meat, cereal, whatever - and in large quantities for many people, that's why so many people are overweight. Most people are not used to eating that many servings of fruits & vegetables, but it could break down like this: breakfast: 4-6 oz oj & a large banana (there is 1 1/2 servings right there) along with whatever else you eat lunch: one cup pepper strips, carrot slices, & cucumbers with your sandwich that has lettuce & tomato, or a large bowl of vegetable soup (homemade to get lots of veggies) snack: small apple or some other kind of fruit dinner: half your plate should be vegetables...so two one cup servings of some kind of veggie -- vegetables fill you up so there is theoretically less room for the heavier stuff. One cup of veggies is really not that much. A 1/2 cup serving is quite small. I have a fruit/protein smoothie most days for breakfast: 1/2 - 1 banana ~1/2 cup each frozen mango & blackberries or blueberries ~1/2 cups 1% milk 1 scoop protein powder (blueberries & cream Spirutein mostly) ~1 TBSP ground flax Whiz it up in the blender, it's great and I'm done with most of my fruit for breakfast. Today was a bad fruit & veggie day for me...we had blueberry whole grain pancakes for breakfast w/scrambled eggs & ham & I did have ~8oz tangerine juice. But then I went to my friends 50th birthday party for most of the afternoon and they had lots of food (protein & starch - a great caterer but I'm not sure why they didn't suggest some better menu planning) but not a fruit or veggie in sight! Lots of wine too. I will not have dinner as I]m really pretty stuffed. This is an unusual day for me, and I will get back on a more healthy track tomorrow.

My 6 month old Venetian gray tile countertops are stained. I decided on a carrara-type after reading this thread, so o just thought I should update it with my experience. My kitchen is in heavy use, admittedly, as I have 3 small kids and I cook a lot. Over the past 6 months about 10 orange stains have appeared. I still have not figured out where they came from. There is also a small etched spot where I absent mindedly set down a can of tomatoes and it had a drip, as well as a grayish grease spot from a dab of butter. These are negligable. The orange is quite noticeable and I am yet to discover what has caused any of them. I try to baby the counter top and protect it from fruits, veggies, juices, and oils. I keep a big glass cutting board out to use for these items. I try to wipe it up if I see anything spill or drip on the marble. Certainly anything i missed would be wiped up later the same day. I have never found a piece of food or a spill that caused an orange stain, they seem to appear out of nowhere and then they get darker. I have used a spray on sealer which is apparently worthless.

Lol lazy_gardens. I have to admit when I saw your post it reminded me of the viral YouTube videos "Harlem Shake". I'm guessing no one else will know what that is but it is a video (several different people have done it) where one person is standing in a room, casually dancing and then when the beat drops, suddenly the room is full of people dressed strangely and dancing in a crazy style.

also the wall that is in question happens to be the wall that the door is in also..so i would have to go floor to ceiling where the vanity is and then over the header of the door and then the other side of the door is the tiled shower...it seems like at some point regardless i'd have to figure out what to do with the transition from 1/2" to 1/4" or from tile that is on 1/2" cement board to 1/4" gypsum board...i know..i'm complicated!

I have no suggestions but just wanted to say I'm sorry. We run into things like this in our DIY renos all the time. It's SO frustrating to have to undo work you've already done. But sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it :(

Did you examine the vanity case and see if it's possible to modify it? I know some cases are put together pretty simply; maybe you could dismantle it, cut the long parts 1/4" shorter, put it together, and recess the top into slots in the drywall, as you suggested (which we had to do for our vanity top and is easy and fine..) I know it's a long shot.

@staceyneil - thanks for the condolence hah..Yeah i'll have to seriously consider ripping the wall down up to the tile. There's no way to shave down the vanity b/c the doors run flush to the ends of it. I was wondering though if maybe it would be fine just replacing from the vanity top down with 1/4" drywall and using mud to fan out that transition from the 1/2" to 1/4" or maybe putting a chair railing over the transition. I mean the amount of space that would have the 1/4" is really small since the space in question between the front end of the vanity to the door frame is about 1.5' and the vanity will be 36" tall. So we're talking about a 1.5'x3'space that is kind of tucked away that will have thinner drywall?...thoughts? maybe i can put up a picture of the space i'm talking about. anyone know how to post a pic?

Can you return the vanity and get one that is the correct size?

If you can return it, you may find that having one custom built to your space is about equal in cost. That's what we ended up doing.

it's a long distance from the vanity to the things that need 1/2" drywall to meet up to.

after 1/4" drywall then you add mud to transition back to 1/2" where you need 1/2" to meet other things.

to post a pic, upload your photo to a web pic hosting site like photo bucket or tinypics (free). when you select the photo there (where it says "share") click on the html line and it will copy (or you can right click and copy) then paste into the body of your message. It will just show text, but when you hit preview message, it will appear.

@happyladi - can't return..too far out of the return policy..stupid me for not checking exact measurements when i got it! dunno why they would advertise it as a 54"!

@olychick - thanks for the info.

@davidro1 - yeah i was thinking i'd try to mud the seam between the 1/2" and 1/4"
