Position of ceiling fan

I'm putting a ceiling fan (one with blades, not an exhaust fan)in the vanity room of our bathroom. The room is only 6' x 5' and the fan is very small, but should do the job. What I'm wondering is if the fan should be located in the middle of the room or in the middle of the area between the vanity and the opposite wall. I'm thinking it's the later because the air would come off the blades onto the person standing in front of the vanity. If the fan were to be positioned in the exact center of the room, the air would be directed more towards the wall. Am I looking at this right, or should it be positioned in the exact center?

I'm putting a fan in the bathroom because there is no window in there and it gets stuffy sometimes when trying to do hair, makeup, etc. I'm just looking for opinions on it's placement.

Normally when the fans run all of the time, its because the car was overheating, and someone didn't know how to really fix it, so they rig the fans. Overheating on the highway is usually an airflow, or coolant flow problem. Once your over 25mph, you don't need the fans (that's why they are electric) because you already have more air pushing through the radiator and AC condenser than the fans would ever pull. The way I approach a problem like this is drive the vehicle and get it to start heating up. Then I stop and start measuring the surface temperatures of different parts of the radiator, and engine block and cylinder head. If airflow is the problem, everything will be hot. If coolant flow is the problem, then the cylinder head will be the hottest. The top of the radiator will be reasonably close to the same temperature of the cylinder head. Meanwhile portions of the engine block, and especially portions of the radiator, especially the lower hose will be much cooler than the cylinder head. The causes could be; Debris inside of or inbetween the AC condenser and/or radiator blocking full air flow. Missing or damaged under car air dam or baffles. Low coolant level. It may be full in the radiator, but that does not mean an air-pocket isn't trapped in the engine. Bad thermostat. Unlikely actually, in fact most thermostats when replaced for overheating appear to fix the car when in fact the problem was actually low coolant. A water pump impeller worn or broken. This causes the coolant to not move the through the engine and the radiator as quickly as it should. A missing thermostat. That one takes a long time to explain, but essentially the coolant "short circuits" the engine and some of it sees cold coolant from the radiator, and some of it stops circulating and overheats. Lastly a restriction in a hose or the radiator itself could be the cause. It takes time to test this out just like any other problem a vehicle can develop.

I'm far from an expert so take my opinion with a grain of salt. When vaporized, water is lighter than air. I would put the fan as high as possible.. right in the peak. Putting it right above the shower doesn't guarantee that all of the steam will be taken care of. I don't know what you mean by 2 outlets. 2 switches for one fan or 2 fans? If 2 fans, did someone tell you that 2 are necessary? If you took into consideration the ceiling height along with the room dimensions, I don't see why 2 fans would be better than one. Wouldn't one strong one be enough? Pardon the questions... we are thinking about vaulting our ceiling when we remodel. :)

A fan can reduce the feeling of hot, typically anywhere from 7 to 10 degrees. Obviously in our southern climate a fan will not be enough once summer time temperatures kick in. A fan in a room is probably not bad insurance to allow occupant that comfort choice whether to use the fan or not. Typically a ceiling mount fan is more than adequate. They come in all sizes of fan blade reach. Most small rooms a 42" fan blade ceiling mount fan is more than adequate for larger room you could install a 52" fan blade ceiling mount. Most ceiling fans come with a reversing switch that depending on how you have it set will either blow air up to the ceiling or down to the floor. Not everyone likes a ceiling fan, because if you have a home office or the room you are trying to cool is on the second floor of the structure... the fan is probably not going to do much most of the time and blowing things around is kind of annoying. If keeping utilities low are your goal: There are ways and methods to find the cool oasis you are looking for. Obviously this comes at a cost far greater than merely installing a ceiling fan. Air Conditioners are rated in SEER's this stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER rating, the less it will cost you to operate. Approximately 12 years ago 10 SEER equipment was still being sold (prior to 2006). Now the minimum SEER rating is 14 for the south. However, current SEER ratings can hit 20 SEER or higher. These systems not only are cost effective but also reduce humidity to a large extent. To the point a ceiling fan would make you too cold on most days. Comfort is a fickle beast. No two people are alike. But a home is an investment and I can guarantee when it comes time to sell that investment a well cooled home in a hot climate like 'Texas' you're more likely to find people who want to be really comfortable. This will help you sell your house, when that time comes. If you're comfortable with a fan, imagine how much more comfortable you'd be with less humidity. Single speed AC's just can't measure up to the task of humidity removal in the south. In my home, ceiling fans are more of a decoration piece... and also serve as a back up in case the AC goes down. I would not recommend fans with metal blades, they will rust and typically require ceilings over 10 feet because they are not considered safe in residential applications. You are best off with fans that have special UV protective ABS plastic blades or thicker solid wood blades that are rated for outdoor wet or damp locations. Wet rated fans have the highest tolerance for abuse from the elements and are the best choice, but a covered porch like yours can use a damp rated or wet rated fan. Also, in outdoor locations it is critical to consider the amount of airflow that the fan produces because open outdoor locations do not allow the air to escape on the sides and the breeze you feel from a fan is a lot less than what you feel in an enclosed area indoors. So you need more powerful fans than those listed above. The Donaire fan recommended below has a wind speed factor of about 3.8 MPH, which is over 50% more breeze than the Westinghouse fan above. sjt, what size fan are you putting in the bathroom? A 36" fan is all a room that size could handle. The longer the blades the more the air will just be thrown up against the walls. As for placement, I agree with you.

digger, Strange? What's strange about putting a ceiling fan in a hot humid room? Maybe he/she lives in a warm to hot climate. Maybe he/she is hot natured. Ever try to put on makeup when your face is sweaty? And using a blow dryer makes the room even hotter. Try relaxing your sore muscles in a HOT bath, in July, In Texas (well actually anywhere from May to Oct in Texas) with no ceiling fan. Why would a person be any less hot in the bathroom than in a den or bedroom? I think it's strange not to put a ceiling fan in the bathroom :)

The fan is 28". I have one in a laundry room that's about the same size and love it!

28" is probably better but usually hard to find. That's why I mentioned the 36" :) The only room in our house that doesn't have a fan is the guest bath. That's the size it would need too.

Oh my gosh! Everyone needs to have a ceiling fan in the bathroom. DH installed it yesterday and I love it! I don't know why I didn't think of it a long time ago. Now when it's warm in there I have a nice breeze on me while applying makeup or blowdrying hair. This is probably going to be one of my favorite things about our remodel!

:) We put a ceiling fan in our master bathroom when we built this house in 1981. Can't imagine not having one. Glad you're thrilled with yours!

Sjt, what a great idea. I just did an update on my guest bathroom and it has no window either. Went with a vent fan and a light. Love your idea so much, the uniqueness of it, and the cooling factor, I ordered a 28" one myself in white. I cannot wait to get it and have it installed. I can just hear my friends saying, "only you Peachie" :)).

Peachiepie--so glad my question inspired someone. You'll love it! DM heard about it and said "you did what?, why I never heard of such a thing!" I just told her it's because she doesn't hang around these forums getting great ideas from everyone else!

I ordered my fan and should have it on Monday. Ordered it from a company in CA and got a few discounts. Exclusive of shipping it cost $65. Shipping was less than ordering from a local compoany here in GA. I cannot wait for the contractor's comments. He thinks I am nuts but always seem to like my off the wall ideas. I think my ideas are creative. He should visit GW :).

My fan was installed yesterday and I love it. The breeze is just right. Visiting relatives will love it this summer. Again, great idea.
