Good deal at Best Buy? Kitchen Aid counter depth fridge?

I would like to buy a Kitchen Aid counter-depth refrigerator for the kitchen update I'm doing. I have seen the Architect II series online and at Sears priced around $2700-$2900 depending on Cu.Ft., but noticed on Bestbuy.com that they've got a 24.5 Cu.Ft. counter-depth Architect series (Not Architect II) on clearance for $1799. At first I dismissed this fridge because I didn't think I'd be able to see one in person. However, I happened to be in Best Buy today and they had one on the floor. The new city I'm moving to (which is where I'd need to buy the actual fridge) has one on the floor at each of the best buys in town...and the sales person said they'll probably knock some money off the fridge because it's a floor model.

I liked the fridge, but am concerned about buying the fridge too soon before I start my update to the cabinets, and wasn't sure if there are issues w/ buying through Best Buy or a floor model. But it seems like $1000 less than the other Kitchen AIds that this might be a pretty good deal. What do you think???

Just make sure you get a full manufacturer's warranty and find out when the warranty starts. You say you haven't started the cabinet remodel yet - are you planning to have the fridge delivered and installed now or store it somewhere until you're ready for it?

We have the Kitchenaid CD 24.5 model KSCS25IN.... It has been a good unit except for the icemaker water inlet tube freezing up about every 3 months. I have had 2 service calls under warranty that did not resolve the problem. Now that I have the problem again, after the warranty is out, ...... you guessed it, this is no longer covered, even though it was NEVER FIXED. I like the refrigerator, but the icemaker issue would be a deal breaker for me if I were buying today. The repairman told me the first time he came that the fix he applied had been done on "hundreds of units" and would "usually" work.

Before the remodel, I sold my perfect condition 4 year old Kenmore fridge on CL. At that time I purchased a 3 yr. old counter depth SS KitchenAid for $1000 from a young woman on CL who had received the appliance as part of her divorce settlement. There are bargains if you are diligent about scouring CL daily even beyond the new Liebherr. Most of the folks who buy Liebherr have really tiny kitchens and need taller, thinner fridges than standard CD. How many sq. ft.is your kitchen? You may not need to go the more expensive Liebherr route. I would not buy the 14 year old KitchenAid. Even if the mechanics are great, the plastics inside become brittle and deteriorate over time. Three years age my 32 year old Montgomery Ward fridge was left with the house I sold still running great. However, the door lining was pulling away, and the door would not close completely due to a loose door casket. Neither of those items could be replaced any longer. I should add that we were a small family and careful with our possessions so this occurred due to age, not abuse. Paneled fridges are one technique to make a small kitchen look larger. However, door panels are an expensive option. You are at the beginning of your remodel, and there is frequently project creep. My approach was to go with SS and use the money for all built in appliances in my small kitchen so that the counter flow is not interrupted. I put the money in an induction cooktop over a 27" wall oven. This is a long way of saying go with the Liebherr over the KA but before you do, make sure you need to spend that extra money on the Liebherr over a standard counter depth like a KitchenAid. Just found this thread and wanted to throw in my experience with a 48" built in Samsung, side-by-side refrigerator with water/ice dispenser. We bought it a year ago and had problems with the water/ice dispenser "sticking" right from the beginning which would cause the water/ice to keep dispensing after you moved the cup away. We had it serviced under warranty and it fixed the problem, for about 6 months until is started doing it again. After about 8 months we noticed water leaking out from under the front doors at the hinges. To make a long story short, 4 months, 5 service appointments and many, many calls to Samsung later without any resolution to the water leaking, we were told the refrigerator can't be repaired and have been offered a refund. It's been a very frustrating experience, and a refund certainly won't cover the cost of taking out and disposing of the old fridge and installing a new one. I have always been a loyal Samsung customer, I just don't think they made a very good built-in refrigerator.

I have a Jenn-Air french door, counter depth. It's about 4-5 years old. I can't remember the height (68 or so inches I'm guessing) but it's almost the largest they made at the time other than the sub-zero size. I wish I had held out for another brand, but I wanted the model with the ice and filtered water dispenser in the door as I am a total water drinker, as in all.the.time, so it's an important feature for me. At the time, KA and JA were about the only brands with this feature. Now there are several. My old refrig died and this one was in stock; I would have had to wait almost 2 weeks for the KA. I should have stuck it out. This thing has cold spots leading to ice chunks in the milk. Several times a year I have soggy, frozen lettuce in the crisper. Those may have been due to an inadvertent movement of the crisper setting but I don't think so. I think the dang refrigerator just ices up and thaws at random. Sometimes we have to take the ice maker out and shake it to get the ice to dispense. It's a wimpy size ice maker too, so I'm glad I don't rely on it for large amounts of ice.

I purchased the KA CD FD 72" high model last fall and so far I really like it. I seriously looked at the Liebherr but in the end I really needed white not stainless - wish the Liebherr had come in white. Whilst I really liked the Liebherr produce drawers (much bigger than on the KA) I also like the split shelves on the KA that I can adjust as two columns. I thought this unit was vastly overpriced relative to the shorter model and the standard depth units, but I really liked the upgraded interior and the hidden hinges etc on the 72", and especially the better sliding produce drawers, so I sprung for it. It would be great if the produce drawers were were larger and deeper like on the Liebherr but I use the veggy green bags and store the extra produce on the glass shelf just above the drawers. It is reasonably quiet, but then I have it where the noise is not an issue in any case. The ice maker seems to work fine for us - but this is my first fridge with ice and so that is already a luxury for me. I could do without the water dispenser - the water tastes disgusting and plasticy. We do not use it and I wish it were not there. My ideal would be to have only the icemaker, no water! For me this was the best fridge outside the Liebherr. However, I could not justify the expense of the Libeherr when I would be compromising on the stainless vs the white. Good luck!

I have that fridge too. No problems in 1 year of service. I bought an extended service plan for $99 for 5 years beyond the original warranty. I also bought a floor model (bought in 2007 and it was a 2004 machine). One thing to note is the height. We had to remove cabinets above it to fit it in. Ours is CD and 36 in wide plus very tall to give more cubic ft.

Does anyone know what the black refridgerator looks like if reference to the frame on the water dispenser? Smooth matt or rough plastic???? Does the newer model have a better water dispenser? Can someone describle the water dispenser on the first model?
Any info would help. Thanks

I'm posting on the general subject of using a fridge before kitchen remodel starts, and not on the specifics of this model. I bought an LG when Best Buy had a particularly good sale and began using it as soon as it was delivered, even though the remodel didn't start for 5 weeks. I had them just plug it in without ice/water hookups as a temporary measure, and keep the plastic film that protects the stainless finish. I'm using the little trays to make ice as a temporary measure. I absolutely loathed my 1980s fridge and was very anxious to have it hauled away. My electricity bill dropped 20%! I already love the fridge and it's one oasis of calm in the chaos of a kitchen remodel! It's been moved around a bit during the remodel, and once it was accidentally plugged into a non-working outlet (no disaster though). So using the fridge before the remodel is doable, especially if you're willing to live without the ice/water features.
