Do we really need all these shut-off valves?

We finally got the vanity out of our small master bathroom and found these shut off valves behind it. They are on the right side wall with the red handles. One is for the toilet (which by the way has it's own already) and one is for the shower which is on the extreme right in the photo.

My worry is that my vanity will expose these valves. I bought a washstand-style vanity similar to this one.

Thanks for any advice. I'm posting on the plumbing board just in case they have any suggestions as well.

You say one of the "red" valves are for the shower. Are you sure there isn't one for each the hot and cold for the shower. The cold might also control the toilet which then has a second shut-off.

I've never known of shut-offs for a shower but personally think it is a GREAT idea. I understand your not wanting to have them on display now that an open vanity has been selected. Perhaps by removing the nut atop the red handle, the handle can be removed. Then, if ever the shower needs to be shut-off, reattaching the handle will enable that to be done. If that is possible, the values will not be as apparent. Otherwise, it is necessary to turn off the water supply for the whole house to work on the shower faucet.

Thanks so much for your replies. I love love love my vanity...and I really hate to ruin the look I'm going for. Turns out these valves ARE hot/cold for the shower after further testing last night.

We decided that we'd just take off the levers so they aren't as noticable and put a nice basket in front of the valves.

Hi amw, JMHO but you didn't mention if the female hose end had a rubber washer in it before connecting to the faucet. If a plumber did the work, I suspect it did. He wouldn't miss that. Hoses are not generally designed to hold constant pressure. There are high quality hoses that do a better job of it but it is not their intended use. Your best bet is to have the plumber hard tap a pvc line with a new faucet location where you want it. The turn it off at the faucet each time you are through using your hose. You could install a more expensive quick coupling system that landscaper use to manually water plants. You just insert the adapter hose fitting into the receiver part twist and you have your water hose energized with water then you can use your nozzle. Hope this helped?

Some realtors do not like to negotiate at all for fear the contract will fall through. My POV is that it does not hurt to ask. However, if you really want the home and think that there is enough competition in the market, you may want to just worry about it later. If that's the only thing wrong with the house it sounds like you found a winner. As long as there is a main shutoff that's easily accessible, then Jeffrey is right. However, some older homes (or those built by short-sighted builders) may not have one. In that case, I'd ask for a main shutoff to be installed where it is easily accessible. We have owned some rental properties where you have to call the city or a plumber to come shut it off.

The seals in shut off valves, at least older models, have a tendency to deteriorate over time just sitting there as they are used infrequently and the packing/seals can deform or go bad. The simplest fix for this is to shut off your main water valve, open a couple of taps that are at low points in the system to drain it, and remove and replace the valve with a new one. The newer models that have a quarter turn to shut off or to open typically have a nylon ball as a valve and you should not end up with this problem in the future if you do the replacement. Trust me, it should be a lot easier to put in a new valve than to try to repair the old one. It's usually a quick job as long as the old valve isn't rusted onto the piping. If you don't have some experience doing plumbing repair, it would be best to get a knowledgeable friend to help or pay a plumber as there are different size connections on these valves, and the connection to the piping can be screw-on or compression, or (less often) soldered on.

I know the answer is form over function but I never understood putting a counter top over machines that already have a clean easily wiped down surface put there by the manufacturer. I don't believe I've ever seen a topless washer or dryer. Never going to be a problem for me since I cannot imagine using my front loader without a pedestal. We hope to maybe do an inside laundry in the future. My valve box will be to the side of the washer. Have no desire to climb over the washer to reach it. Pulling out a washer is no small task either. A front loader can weigh from 175 to 250 pounds. That's dead weight. No rollers like a fridge has. And that is without a load of wet towels or jeans in it when they are most likely to need it. Murphy's law.
