Shut off valves above a counter? Any attractive solutions?
Comments (2)Can you put them high enough that you could have a chute running behind the wall of the counter? Basically put a door, similar to an electrical panel door, over the front of the valves. You would have to set back the original boxed water valve set so that you could actually put a recessed door on front and be able to run your hookups in front. Finish by having a door that sets flush with the wall. You would want to get the box high enough to be able to get your hand in and actually connect the hoses. If you are fairly handy, making a small enclosed door should not be a problem. Open the panel and fish your hoses thru the "chute." You could even finish off the inside with drywall. That way you wouldn't need special valves or have to worry about rerouting the drain hose. It will conceal your problem, and you will have easy access to turn off the water in case of leakage. Another option is if you have a closet on the other side of the washer installation wall. You could then put a large access panel inside the closet. This would also make it easier to hook up the dryer....See Moreelectonic shut off valves? Anyone use them?
Comments (3)I have no experience with the electronic ones; I use the manual ones, simple quarter-turn levers that take about the same amount of time to shut off as a light switch. Mine are quite pipe/plumbing-ish looking, some users here have solved that problem in more elegant laundry rooms by using regular bathroom or kitchen faucet handles as the shut-offs. I have seen occasional reports of the electronic ones causing water flow fault indications in some machines. I would ask your machine's manufacturer for recommendations. (Manual ones won't do that.) Either way, (manual or electronic) it's a very good idea to have them. You may also be able to get some reduction on your homeowner's insurance premium, particularly if your machines are not in the basement. Won't hurt to ask! Comments (6)I believe they will have to come up through the countertop. We live in Wisconsin and they can't put the pipes on the outside wall, they have to come up through the floor from the basement. There won't be enough space between the washer and the counter for the valves. I was thinking of some sort of box that could slide out for access if needed but I didn't think about matching the formica. The cabinet maker suggested making a special cabinet for it with a door and it would be fitted like a stacked cabinet between the counter and the upper cabinets. I'm sure they could make it look really nice but I didn't want the extra expense of a matching cabinet. I'm doing a kitchen, laundry room and half bath remodel at once so I will be deciding on tile for some of these areas this week. Depending on how pricey the tile is I might put tile in the space between the countertop and uppers in the laundry room. (Cost might dictate paint for now) The remodeled half bath will be across the hall from the laundry room. We are putting in new tile flooring throughout, maybe just changing up the pattern a little to distinguish the rooms from the hallway, so the color palate will be similar in both rooms. In the bathroom I will have a wall tiled halfway up behind my sink and toilet. I was wondering if I could make the box out of the same tile I use for the half wall in the bathroom. The washer and dryer will be on the same south wall just across a small hallway. Do you think that could work or should I stick with a formica covered box?...See Morehelp covering shut off valves
Comments (4)Thank you for the idea. That sounds cute! If I remember the picture I saw on this site, someone had made a 3 sided box that fit in the space between the counter and the upper cabinet and matched her cabinetry. I also considered finding something like a tin canister cutting the bottom out of it and painting it. Thought I could pair it up with a couple other decorative items and make it look like a little accent area on the counter. Any other ideas?...See MoreDLM2000-GW
