Full Service Remodeling Company vs. Handyman Type

We are in the process of getting estimates for a major remodel of a master bathroom. We have met with a few "handyman" type individuals who have done bathroom remodels and have also had ballpark estimates from full service remodeling companies. We might be able to do some of the demo ourselves but really need someone who can get in there an gut and tackle an entire project.We are somewhat overwhelmed by this project and wonder if a full service company is necessary, advantages, disadvantages and if a handy man, remodeler type has worked for you. Any thoughts on full service remodelers vs. handyman types? I would love to hear different experiences and pros and cons.

A handyman can change one faucet for another, or do a drywall patch, or change out a ceiling fan for a chandelier.Simple DIY tasks that someone doesn't really want to DIY. They have no business being involved with anything more involved or serious. Nor can they, legally. No "handyman" is licensed to do plumbing or electrical---IF he is licensed or insured to do anything.

A licensed and insured General Contractor can do basic of both, and has expert subs that he can hire if the scope of work deems it necessary.

A "handyman" also cannot pull the needed permits, nor arrange for the required inspections. He would require that you do all of that, and then YOU would be legally responsible if something were done incorrectly as your name would be on the permit as the responsible party.

If a handyman wants to do general contracting, then sitting for the contractors exam and obtaining contractors insurance is a requisite. Then they aren't a handyman anymore, but an actual contractor.

Thanks hollysprings. Maybe a General Contractor is more of what I was referring to, someone who does more than just change out ceiling fans or small projects around the home but actually does remodeling on a larger scope but not a full remodeling company per se. You bring up good points though. Very helpful.

So far it seems like Sub/Zero has good reviews. pllog- you raise a good point in that I do live in a smaller city and service in general will be harder. To give an idea any showroom that i visited was at least an hour away. rima-wa- looks like you had a good experience with Mile service. I originally was looking into Gag oven but scratched that idea entirely since there are NO displays in any showroom in my state at all! Imagine servicing something like that. On a final note Wolf is about to put a Combi Steam/Convection oven on a few of our showrooms here. Since I was initially really interested in this feature maybe I should start looking in thais direction. Still there are features in the Miele oven that I really liked. Plus I think I was going to get a few pieces off the showroom floor and from the Close out section that would have priced out some of these Miele appliances a bit better. How to remodel full bath "on the cheap"

I bought a nice 60" double vanity with marble top from Home Depot and they offered a service to deliver to the room of my choice. It was a very heavy fully assembled vanity and that was well worth the extra money to have two sturdy delivery men carry it up . Home Depot Water Creation Madison 60in Vanity - $1299 I also purchased a nice Toto toilet from Home Depot. In the past I've also purchased them from other online stores or from a local plumbing supply. I would typically prefer to purchase from smaller local plumbing supply but the one in town that supplies Toto sold me a 1.6gpf and then gave me a 1.28gpf. When I complained and asked for the toilet I requested / purchased they lied to me and told me Toto wasn't making them anymore. Home Depot let me purchase online and pick up in local store. And I ended up with the correct toilet. Very easy. Home Depot TOTO Drake Toilet - $263 I would definitely install a new tub rather than considering painting / refinishing an existing tub. I prefer a sturdy cast iron tub, but they are heavy. So that might be another one you'd want to have delivered (if possible). Or you can opt for an acrylic tub which would be much easier to move yourself. Make absolutely certain that whoever is installing tile is properly waterproofing behind the tile. Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own and you don't want to spend the money only to have a disastrous mold problem in a few years. Shop around for tile. Hit up a bunch of local tile stores and get cost per sqft for tile you like. Some tile is incredibly expensive and other tile is very reasonably priced. Just keep yourself to a budget and I'm sure you can design a lovely bathroom and source all the materials yourself.

@Design Girl - I asked the rep to order a larger sample of the Thassos Bold Basketweave. The largest rectangular piece is representative of the size of the white pieces. When I put them up against the subway tile I plan to use, I notice the ratio of L x W is very different. Would that bother you? I'm attaching the large patter and the small. I'm looking at white oak with one of the lighter grey stains @MA Scag - I would not have the beautiful white oak and then put a grey stain on it. You might as well then not spend the money for white oak. The whole point of spending extra on white oak is due to its appearance. Remove the grey stain from your choice. Or, if you really want grey cabinetry, then don't get white oak and instead choose one of the painted grey finishes. My answer would be less emphatic that Hollysprings'. There are all levels of handypersons out there, and some would be perfectly competent to handle a full bath remodel. Mr. Weedy would be one such, with my help. We've done several bathrooms together. I also have a friend who hired a one-man-show to remodel their bathroom a few years ago, with excellent results.

We have lived in several jurisdictions where contractors (even subs) are not licensed, so the advice to make sure they're licensed doesn't always apply. If trades are locally licensed in your town/city, then by all means don't hire someone unlicensed. But that may not apply.

Do make sure that they carry insurance, and if a handyperson claims to be able to do a full bath remodel, check their references carefully. But then you should check a GC's or design-build firm's references carefully as well.
