Miele Canada dishwasher: Diamante or Optima?

Trying to decide between the Diamante or Optima. (Canada model #'s G2143SCU and G2432SCU). Does anyone have one of these models and do you love it? How has your service been in Canada if you have had to call? Also, did you get a Miele installer or not? Thanks for any information.

My parents have a G2142 and I have on older G2170 so not a direct comparison, but here's my insight on Miele dishwashers in Canada.

Both of our dishwashers perform equally. Both are very quiet and do a good job of getting dishes clean. Detergent choice is key. Your detergent must be matched to your water quality, trial and error works best here.

The racking system in a Miele takes a different mindset. Our dishwasher holds at least 50% more than our old GE. We see significant energy and water savings from that feature alone.

My experience with Miele service in Canada has been consistently terrible. Our washer and dryer has been a 9-month nightmare. Our dishwasher has not needed service, and if it ever does, I will do everything possible to avoid Miele service. This includes throwing the dishwasher out and buying another one.

If you ever do need service from Miele, be prepared for them to tell you nothing is wrong with your dishwasher. Miele seems to be quite proud of it's low warranty claim history. They achieve that low claim frequency by simply denying that there is anything wrong with the machine. When our brand new dryer put out it's first load of still wet laundry, after a 20 minute wait on hold Miele's non-english speaking call-center employee simply told us that their machines are "excellent" and that nothing was wrong. Consider Miele's warranty to be non-existent.

I cannot stress enough how poor Miele's service has been for us.

As for professional installation, unless you're a fairly advanced DIYer, I would seriously consider it. Our installations (both mine and my parents) required significant plumbing and electrical re-works.

Thanks ghetterly...I have read so many bad reviews about Miele's customer service in the U.S. but wasn't sure if it was the same in Canada. Friends have said how good their dishwashers are but they have not had to call for repair.

The big thing for me is to find one that has the waterproof system box because of having hardwood flooring put in when we do the renos...plus I like the crystal/china feature and the cutlery tray of Miele.

I guess there probably isn't any point in buying their warranty either if all they do is deny anything is wrong with their items!

Workingondream house; I have used both Asko and Miele. The upper racks are very similar. I bought the Asko 11 years ago because I was scared to try the cutlery tray AND no one has ever heard of it (or Miele or Asko) then. Bosch was starting to make in-roads in the US market. I think the cutlery is much cleaner with the cutlery tray. Miele essentially has 3 spray arms because there is a small one above the cutlery tray. I don't think the other brands do that. The bottom rack holds more since the basket is not there. However, you lose the height slightly due to the cutlery tray. Every now and then, the lack of height does make a difference. They are both good DWs. You need to go with the rack that works best for your stuff.

The drama continues. This morning I made the builder understand that the dishwasher has to be flush. The cabinet guy came and put the necessary wood support to the sides so that the dishwasher can be pushed in enough to be flush and then still be screwed in on the sides. I had to go to work after I explained all this to the plumber in addition to the details about the supply and drain hoses. My wife went by later and took pictures of the installation. I just took a look at the pictures as I had to work late and I am pissed!!! Check out the following pictures You can clearly see that they forgot to raise the level of the dishwasher. There is a big gap between the top of the dishwasher and the granite! Every installer knows that this has to be adjusted. To make matters worse, one of the plumbers installed the toe kick (the black one that has the long adjustable depth rods) with the dishwasher being so low to the ground and another plumber opens the door and breaks off both of the rods. They throw it away and say to my wife the toe kick is not needed. What a bunch of crock. They also screwed in the side screws obviously at the wrong level. I have to ask them to come back and raise the level of the dishwasher and rescrew in. I am really annoyed as my builder assured me these plumbers knew what they were doing. I should have just gone with the Miele authorized dealer that I bought the dw from. They do the installation for $150. I thought I was saving that by letting the builder do it! In addition to this, one of the plumbers was a wise crack and was behaving in a less than polite manner with my wife. The builder is going to get an earful from me tomorrow. I hope that the process of opening the DW door and breaking off the toe kick rods did not damage the door itself. Otherwise I have to get the builder to pay for the damage. I bought this myself and asked him to install it. So, I don't know if I can make him liable.

Hi homepro01, You have given me pause. I checked out the reputation of this seller online and there have been mixed reviews. It seems a lot of the appliance places have mixed reviews! I will make sure that the deal is for a new dishwasher in the box with no scratches and dents and not a customer return. So, thanks for the reality check! lulu88: I suppose it is important to make sure that there are no punctures in the unit, not likely with a stainless steel tub, or with the hoses, but I suppose you don't want any leaks after hooking up the dishwasher. Be careful if the deal says "as is" because then you have no recourse if you find out something is wrong after purchasing it. I saw a couple buy the same fully integrated Optima model from the floor this weekend and it had a small dent and some scratches. The dealer said the retail price was $1,900 and gave it to them for $1,488. Personally, I thought that was still too high for the floor model. I have checked a couple more appliance places around here (San Francisco bay area) and it does appear that the prices for in-stock Mieles are dropping because there is too much inventory. I don't think this is surprising given the current economy and the slow down in construction.

I am in complete agreement with you, fauguy. While I considered getting the La Perla, I decided that, even if they were close in price, I'd go for the Optima. I prefer the routine controls on the Optima - navigating a menu for a dishwasher, especially when I'll use one setting 90% of the time seemed like overkill. I loved the look of the fully integrated Optima in the store, but as I posted earlier, the handle looks too bulky when installed. I told the salesman that my first choice was the G2432. I didn't want him to have to special order a new unit, so I told him I'd take the G2472 if the other one wasn't in stock. You're also right that some of the salesmen at the store, while generally informed about the products, sometimes don't know them in great detail. Unfortunately, they're really not forced to be, as they sell great product that sells itself (large Miele sales), and no customers there spend the time researching like I do. While I am aware of their knowledge base, I didn't think it was an issue, as I determined the right model on my own. My mistake was assuming that I would receive the current unit. Anyway, the new G2432 was installed today. Haven't run it yet. Funny thing - I noticed that the Normal wash time is 2:39, while it was about 1:43 on the G2470. With the Turbo setting, it drops to 1:43. I'll have to experiment with the settings to see if I can use a quicker wash. I'd like to use the Express, but not sure if the plastic cups and bowls will dry.
