X-post Plumbing - what is this thing under my overflow cover?

Been getting a rust stain under the overflow cover plate from the drip, got tired of cleaning it all the time. We have iron in the water but this one spot needed cleaning every other day, and I could tell it was getting scaly. So pulled it off and found this corroded thing - do we need it or can I remove it? Put a gasket under the cover? Replace it with a plastic piece? If we need this, can someone tell me what it's called so I can go to plumbing supply and ask for the right part? Thanks.

You need it.

It is called a 'retainer plate' at least by Price-Pfister.

You can probably find one in the big box store plumbing section or at a plumbing supply house.

Try to get something besides cheap galvanized steel.

Plastic would actually be decent here, or stainless steel.

See here's the deal as I see it: Everything they wrote in true. Stone is natural. It has fissures...inclusions...it comes in varying thicknesses. Those things in and of themselves are not flaws in natural stone... ...until that stone is made into a countertop. Then they become flaws. Inclusions and fissures weaken slabs. That's why you see quite a few "flawed" slabs being resined. Granites are usually filled with epoxy resins, marbles with polyesters. The resin fills the fissures, can fill the inclusions, and the process turns a flawed weak slab into a less porous, stronger material. I think I'm getting off track though, so back to your clause. The part that really irks me is "...pieces may not match seam to seam due to movement of color and thickness of material. Also that material thickness can vary up to 1/4"." If they put a period after "...due to movement of color" and left it at that I'd still be suspect, but I'd be okay with it. Sort of. Pieces may not match seam-to-seam due to movement...yeah, I can see that a little. But you'll have that a bit under control by seeing the slabs yourself. Pieces may not match seam-to-seam due to thickness...followed by: Material thickness can vary by up to 1/4 inch...they are essentially asking you to approve an installation that could possibly have a 1/4" height differential. I have to say that marble, I really don't think it difficult to work with. While I've sized slabs and done simple edging on marble slabs, I've never had a problem working or installing the material. And I've done master baths in near 100% marble. If you want marble, go with marble. Make them install what you want. The fact that they tanked your first install seems more due to careless worksmanship than due to flawed material. If you were willing to go to the added expense of having someone repair your flawed deck, consider having the company you're now involved with provide you with replacement slabs of marble, but you hire a new fabricator to do the new fabrication and installation.

jesus, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. i feel your pain. i haven't tiled yet, but the backerboard went up when i noticed that the plumbing was clearly not centered. (he had the architect's plan, he had the specs from duravit, go figure). my contractor, however, is wonderful (for so many reasons, believe me). and i do have a vanity console to possibly cover part of it, but not all, since there are drawers in the console that can't be bumping into plumbing. but he's assured me that there is no problem with moving the plumbing again. i will check with him to see what he means exactly by that. but it sounded like it wasn't a major deal. for your sake, i hope that means it can be done externally and balanced visually. i'm sorry that i can't help you more. i just wanted to let you know that you're not alone with your remodeling frustrations. after katrina, i was totally robbed with an 80K "renovation." "mr. green's" slow and uses only one assistant., but has old-school integrity. he's already realigned other plumbing for me (new bathtub was three inches wider than the original) and doesn't fuss about or "stick it to me" for the "extra and unexpected." good luck. and if i find something out, i;ll let you know.

"Could not take the prime". Priming a jet pump consists of filling the pipes between the bottom of the well and the pump. If these pipes stay full, the pump is primed. But that does not mean that it will actually pump. Sounds as if brass adapters are screwed into a cast iron venturi body ( the jet). BAD! Electrolysis is assured! May look like barnacles! Non-metallic adapters are available and recommended. Use two 100% stainless steel clamps at each poly pipe connection to the adapters. Stainless steel poly pipe adapters are available, but often hard to find. In the well, the foot valve is frequently brass. I use Schedule 80 threaded PVC to isolate the cast iron and the brass at the foot valve. No dissimilar metals should be touching each other, but stainless steel typically is OK against cast iron and often compatible with brass. The venturi itself is the smallest passage within the jet body and often catches debris. If such is lodged in the venturi, it will pump poorly or not at all. Remember, the foot valve holds the prime, the venturi does the pumping.

Thank you all for ideas! Sum5463, thats looks like a nice idea for our next kitchen. gr8day, that cheesecake looks wonderful and is good inspiration to get cooking. When I came downstairs this morning, DH had put a thin flexible cutting board under it. I can now slide it. I do plan on keeping it on the counter but need to determine exactly where. Right now I have more items on the counter than I want. I got to pick the color and it is crimson red so I don't mind people seeing it. I can see how a lift would be very convenient. I can't imagine this mixer walking anywhere when in use. My 30 year old Oster mixer which is light weight never moved when mixing heavy dough. Sounds like this mixer really makes a difference in cooking. jil314, I will keep that in mind. I never liked making pulled pork because it was too much work schreding. I read to let your mixer do it. It actually worked pretty well in my Oster and now hearing about chicken I'm thinking it may work really well with pork too in the KA.

Plumbing supply place says unless I can take one off (have one on tub in unfinished bathroom, have access to the back of that in case gasket slips) and bring it in, they can't help w/o a manufacturer. They don't know if anyone makes one in SS. Price Pfister uses these, don't see why modular factory would use PP drain with Delta faucet. Gerber also uses them. Builder has no idea what factory used/uses.

I emailed the plumber who did the onsite work for us, I trust him, he found cracked pipe b/t floors (looks like someone dropped something on it before shipping he said), saved us a *big* mess there. He says these are only used to hold pipe to tub during install, should be OK to remove now as long as I'm careful that gasket stays in place. We want to finish the master bath this year, install a filter for the iron problem, so maybe I'll have *him* remove this one at that time (we're going to replace trim on master tub with color that actually matches the faucet - don't know why they put in cheap plastic "chrome" when we got Delta ORB faucets - not installed since bathroom needs tub deck tiled 1st). I may cut out the sheetrock on the other side of the wall (a cubby for the hamper) and put in a panel for access in this bathroom too.

As long as we take care of this now, should be OK. Besides the cosmetic issue of rust, I was worried that the screws would corrode so much that when we needed to replace the gasket, they'd just break off. I didn't loosen them, but after I took the pic, I cleaned it as best I could with it in place. I think hot steamy showers and spray hitting body then bouncing back against spout/overflow are causing this to stay wet most of the time (4 people, 1 shower and the kids like them *hot*!).
