WWYD - Range vs wall oven vs Advantium

Hello there!

DH and I are having a really tough time deciding on appliances. We would love some feedback on our options.

Option 1: E'lux slide in induction range

Option 2: 36" induction cooktop + single convection wall oven

Option 3: 36" induction cooktop + single wall oven ($1000 or so, so no convection) + Advantium 240

For those of you who have the Advantium, do you find that you also need a convection oven, or would you be happy with a regular oven?

Honestly, I would choose option 2 + Advantium, but DH doesn't think that the cost of the Advantium alone is justifiable. We're young, we entertain, and we have a growing family. What would make the most sense?

My 2 cents.....

The Advantium 240 is a fantastic appliance that I will not do without... However, its role in the Kitchen doesn't replace anything. It is more of a lifestyle enhancement appliance. It takes food items that are considered fast and makes them lightning fast. Allows you to start your frozen biscuits the same time as bacon and eggs and have them finish at the same time. It will not Roast low and slow a big hunk of critter like a good convection oven will. So, You will need a good oven. Wall oven or Slide in... Just a personal choice. I like wall ovens.

Well...the Advantium can replace a standard microwave if you don't use it heavily. (Overuse wears it out, so if you're zapping things all day long, it's better to wear out the $100 Costco special.)

I think option 4 is the best. That is, option 2 plus the Advantium. A young family can make the most of the speed cook features of the Advantium, and it makes for a great extra oven when you're entertaining. Most ovens nowadays are engineered to meet cost and energy usage goals, rather than to cook well. I wouldn't take an inexpensive oven without convection on a bet. Convection helps to make up for some of the quality issues.

I am a sufficient cook that I can manage with no oven at all, or an uneven ancient one, but I would resent it if I put good money down on an oven and then had to fight it.

acgu - just use some common sense and it works How long do you want to cook an item - remember it takes a lot less time than a standard oven - I cooked 2 giant potatoes (over a pound each) in 9 minutes flat and they were absolutely wonderful Do you need the top browned and how much - if you want a lot of browning - you increase the number and less if it is going to be in the oven for a long time Do you need heat from the bottom - be sure to use an oven safe dish that is not metal (although you need to use the metal tray.. Do you want to speed up the cooking - add the MW - I usually use a number of 2-4 if I am speed cooking Do you want convection - move the air around a bit. Then push start and ready to go. Have I had any failure - yup - one massive scalloped potato - forgot I was only cooking half a recipe and used a small corning dish - and it overflowed and had really dark edges - then my DH started nibbling the dark edges and thought they were great. I love the huge oven cavity that my Bluestar 30" has ... and I honestly have a need for that large cavity once every few years. It's one of those "when you need it, you really need" it things. But that need doesn't happen all that often. In our current remodel, we are getting a Miele CSO and a Miele Speedoven; those are only 24" wide. I expect that, like everybody else in this forum, I'll use them much more frequently than the big oven. If you never cook for really large groups of people, I could definitely see you be OK with smaller ovens. And from what I can tell, it's not as if a 30" wall oven was small. I do have to caution you though that it doesn't look as if the Samsung oven is an actual combination-steam-oven. Instead, it looks to me as if it is a regular oven that has a steam injection feature. That's a lot more limiting. Please read up on the difference before making a decision. Also, while I don't know anything else about this particular model, this forum is generally somewhat negative on Samsung appliances. They don't really have a great reputation for reliability right now. I wouldn't know whether that applies to their ovens, though, or if it is just their refrigerators that everybody seems to hate on.

@Amy Cantu We've been in our house for 6 mo now and I really like the GE Monogram oven. I haven't actually used the speed oven functionality of the speed oven. Just the microwave. And even then, we just use the add 30 sec option. I need to sit down with the manual and experiment with it. Unfortunately, using the speed oven is not as simple as just turning it on. It's pretty complex. I remember when I tried the speed oven at my friend's house it was really hard, and I thought I'd need to dedicate some serious experimentation to getting it to work for me, and doubted that I would ever bother using it as an oven except for Thanksgiving, which hasn't happened yet. My motivation to learn how to use it has been even less than I expected, so I'm sorry to say I can't report back. I also haven't tried using the oven probe functionality for the oven (haven't cooked a roast yet). Need to find the oven probe along with the speed oven manual! But I have done a ton of baking and roasting of vegetables and have been pleased. We were living in a rental house with a viking range and the GE monogram oven is 1000x better than whatever model of viking oven came with the range in the rental. Much more even. I've done two cakes side by side and they came out beautifully without the need to rotate. With a sheet of cookies I notice that sometimes a corner might brown a little quicker than another corner, but not so much that I really need to worry about rotating the pan halfway through. Broiler also works great--I've been making a lot of toast to go with steak tartare and an entire pan filled with toast toast 100% evenly under the broiler--hooray!

I like a range top and wall ovens. I love having two big drawers under the range top for pots and pans. And, I think a wall oven is easier to use. Also, we have had Thermador in my last two kitchens. I have really liked.

Fortunately Pillog, there are still some great ovens out there.

We've had our Elux Icon > 5 years now, trouble free, quiet, and it bakes great, whether you use convection or not, and if fact wife never uses the convection, (I guess she's just
"Old Fashioned"), but everything comes out great, ---
Meatloaf, stuffed bell peppers, tamalie and spaghetti pies, pork roasts, turkey, U name it.

I wish I could get her to use the convection more as it does save power, (faster, and the element around the fan does not draw as much current as the bigger elements do), but as long as the stuff comes out great, I'm not complaining.

She could use the speed oven a lot more too, even as a conventional or convection oven, but except for taters, Yams, and reheating stuff, She uses the regular oven.
I do use the speed oven for baking, Nuking and speed cooking. Have done turkey parts, stuffed bell peppers, Meatloaf, etc and they are the same great quality as the regular oven, but I'm a bit more of a "modern chef" than is the wife.

We have not done cookies, or baked a cake in either, as I hafta keeps my "Boyish Figure" (LOL).

So the Advantium or any speed oven, Miele, or Electrolux can function as a 2nd oven very well, and in fact a 1st oven except for things that won't fit, and so far, that's just been the Thanksgiving Turkey.

Thanks for the feedback! I think we've pretty much decided on Option 1. I was afraid that I would use the Advantium just like a microwave and it's too expensive for that. Another deciding factor is the size of our kitchen. We do get more counter space with a range.

Now time to peruse old threads and decide on a dishwasher. I'm leaning towards the Miele Futura but I'm also interested in the F&P drawers...
