wolf vs. theramdor gas cooktops

I am having a hard time deciding between these two 36" gas cooktops. I really like the higher BTU burner and the star shape on the Thermador but like the reputation and reliability of Wolf and that all the burners are the same so you don't have to worry about which pan goes where.

Anyone have any experience or opinion about these two? Thanks!

Wow, I can't believe no one has responded to your question. I'm probably the last person that should be responding since I have been asking similar questions myself. Not sure you still need the answer but I looked at both of these cooktops and counted out the Thermador pretty quickly, but we looked at so many, I can't remember specifically why. I narrowed my choices down to the Viking and the Wolf. Very long story short, we are getting the Wolf.

We liked the look (a little designer, a little pro) as well as the simmer levels. We felt the reliability and known customer service were pluses with the Wolf as well. I think barring any service issues, we would have been happy with either, but their has been less complaints of issues coming from Wolf customers

I'm excited to get it installed in a week or so!!

Thanks Jan for your response. I just read your thread about your cooktop decision. Currently we are leaning towards the thermador. My DH likes the star burners. I like the high BTU central burner. Also we will be going with a downdraft and I like the rise on the thermador. I believe it is less expensive (but not by a huge margin) than the wolf. I wish you could remember why you ruled out the thermador on your list. You might have me up tossing and turning over this decision :)

I believe the Wolf range top comes with either sealed OR open burners, or just the open burners, while the cooktop comes with only sealed burners. The AG range comes with open burners, the DF range comes with sealed burners. If you go to the Wolf/SZ webstie, you can find out for sure (loads of info, pics, specs....on their site). FWIW, we recently got a Wolf AG range. The open burners have a very tight opening, so barring a spillover, it's not too likely that much is going to end up on the drip tray anyway (which you can just line with foil, and replace when needed--nobody sees it unless you slide out the tray). As for cleaning the black enamel burner pans/range top, you'd need to do that whether your burners were sealed or open. With open burners, you can lift out the pans themselves (3 of them), and bring to the sink to clean, or just spritz them with your preferred cleaner/de-greaser, and wipe clean (which is what I've done so far). I'm not too big on cleaning the burner rings (unless they're really messy from spills), and they are easy enough to lift up and then clean (burnt on stuff is probably just as difficult or easy to remove on most burners; open or sealed). This thread is ten years old already. I’ll go ahead and comment for the benefit of others who may still need the insight. I can comment knowledgeably on a Wolf gas cooktop. But I’ve only had a Miele electric induction cooktop. Customer service-wise HANDS DOWN Wolf wins. Miele is notoriously lacking in this regard. Call Miele, you get an uniformed agent answering at an offshore call center. Call Wolf, you get a person in Wisconsin—where the unit is MADE. As for help with any malfunctions, I’ve had my Wolf for less than a year, so it‘s hard to say. It‘s been working beautifully. In my research Wolf’s largest burner had the most BTUs of any among its competitors, yet it also allows for gentle simmering. In fact, one half of the dial is dedicated to simmering. My Miele was plagued with issues. Of the four Miele appliances purchased for my last home, I had consistent issues with two. I can only assume Miele dependability is a toss-up. Bring your pots into a showroom to try them out. Function-wise I suspect you would be happy with any of these, but layout may be another story. I chose the Miele (not with the flex burner - was not out yet) because I wanted to easily be able to use 3 12" skillets at the same time - it's great for that, and much better than the newer model IMO or any of the other models. Many of them just have smaller hob sizes which are not as good for larger skillets (boiling water doesn't matter so much - so depends on what you are doing). Love the separate burner timers too - we use them a lot more than we thought we would for our pressure cooker, rice, pasta, drying cast iron, etc. Definitely thrilled with our choice all the way around! You probably can't make a wrong choice here though.

So, time to chime in here. I went with the Blue Star 36" induction cook top 2 years ago. Looks great, LOVED the knobs, worked fantastic... for about 18 months. I'll note that unlike their other products it only has a 1 year warranty. First, the two rightmost burners started indicating they were overheating when the central burner was in use (and the rightmost were not). I reset the system at the breaker per the manual and it rand great for three weeks with a hitch, then the central and right top burner cut out entirely. Three days later they came back, but wouldn't heat above level 7 (out of 10). I had (or so I thought) the good sense to get an extended warranty, but after getting a service guy out here the warranty company informs me it will cost more to fix than I paid in the first place, so they're going to cash me out. Blue Star may be good in other areas (no experience here), but based on my experience with this one, I don't think they have enough time making this product to reach their usual degree of reliability. Addendum: looks like Blue Star (when I bought it) had a narrower cut out (18") than anything currently on the market, including their own product. At least it looks like they're learning from past mistakes...

We debated about the Wolf and Thermidor. They are both recommended for high altitude where I live. I liked both but in the end decided on Wolf because I have 2 close friends that have had the same Wolf cooktop for 5+ years and are very happy with theirs. One is a caterer and uses it a lot. The only personal feedback I got about the Thermidor was from a homeowner at a show home and she loved it. I think you won't go wrong either way. Appliance decisions are so hard!

Docmamma...I will give it some more thought (maybe look up the unit online, it may spark my memory) There were several we just didn't like the look of, although I don't think Thermador was one of them. (Gagg was!) My salesman has an unbelievable memory and I am calling him later this morning, if I think of it I will ask him why we passed it up.

Pure speculation..... the salesman was also big on showing us how structrually sound each cooktop was...pushing on the metal under the grates. It could have been that it looked weaker (thinking of dents & dings) I remember thinking the star burners looked neat. Different, but not in a bad way. ;) I do remember salesman saying people generally loved that look, or hated it.

I know first hand how hard this decision is! Good Luck!

Docmamma, I think you are incorrect on thinking the Wolf cooktop has all the same size burners. The 36" cooktops have a 15,000, a 12,000 and three 9,000 BTU burners. The rangetop have all the same size, 15,000 BTUs. I have a Wolf rangetop and I love it. If you want the burners all to be the same BTUs, look at the rangetops.

Thanks Weimon - we are at altitude too. I think both will be good choices for that reason. Our appliance salesman went into great detail about why they are better but I honestly can't remember the details now.

Jan - no worries about tracking down your thoughts on thermador. at this point I think unless I hear a strong reason to go with the wolf we are pretty set on our decision.

kala - thanks for the info. The details are a bit fuzzy for me but I do know that the central burner on the thermador is 18,000 BTUs.
