advice on decorating/color schemes for small bath?

I'm doing a quick and dirty update of a small (5X6) bathroom...new paint, towels, shower curtain, light fixtures, medicine cabinet and mirror. But so far, a clear picture of what I want is eluding me. I'm hoping for inspiration/suggestions from all you creative folks out there.

What I have to work with: Small (4') clawfoot, cast iron tub, now painted pale blue on the outside (I want it a different color for sure...maybe red?), vintage white wall-mounted corner sink, with built in high backsplash. Large old window--well-kept golden oak. Newish oak floor. Painted beadboard wainscoting,

The bathroom is used by my teenage son, so I'm looking for something not too fussy (no skirt on sink, for example...he'll just end up drying his hands on it!) Maybe rather rustic/vintage in look...I've been thinking vaguely of a vintage medicine cabinet and barn-type lighting.

But I'm stuck on colors and on the oak window. (And by the way, I HATE those oak toilet seats...SEEM so unsanitary!)

Would love to hear any ideas for color schemes or other touches that would make it special and fun, at a reasonable cost.

With the "givens" in your bathroom of teenage boy, oak windows, oak floors and a vintage tub, I immediately thought of a navy blue and white color scheme. I'd love to see navy towels, but I learned the hard way that teenagers need WHITE or nearly white towels because they use acne products with benzyl peroxide which will bleach any colored towel. Even if your son doesn't use that stuff, some of their friends do so don't go there. So what about White Wainscotting, Navy rug, Navy on the outside of the tub, Navy/white stripe walls? Maybe some Khaki?Tan color for accent? Or reverse it and have Khaki/Tan with a little Navy for accent? Does your son have any vote on this?

lnmc: yes, that sounds crisp, clean and doable. My son will only be around for another year or so, before off to college...so he doesn't get a lot of say...just veto power over anything he HATES!

My 13 x 8 Bath is still a work in progress, wardrobes flanking the vanity which are a stained white finish, glass shower enclosure, round window paint are to be complete in the next two weeks, hopefully. I am within walking distance to the beach so was hoping to incorporate that feel in this room. Right now it is cooler than warm. I used marble like porcelain and a small row of sea glass color accent tile in the shower, grey wood like tile on the floor and blue grey on the walls. The warmth is in my mahogany vanity, mahogany door and my yet to be hung sand color woven blind. I think you've got some good ideas. I've seen some nice rooms with wallpaper behind the bed. As long as the wall is correctly prepped and it's in your budget - go for it. When/if you want to change, it should be easy to remove. If you're going to do that, I'd choose bedding with little to no design. Clean and serene. I like your tulip table and also the acrylic piece - if it's the correct height. It may not be in your budget, but I love the floating shelves that decoenthusiaste posted. We can't see your window coverings, but I really like having room darkening treatments in my bedrooms. I used to frequently visit family in Texas and my room was east facing with shutters. The morning light was terrible.

I would not leave the cabinet just hanging out In its wall hole that way. Get some molding to cover the space between the cabinet and the sides of the hole. You will need to scribe the molding to the places where the cabinet trim sticks out more. Or, since you are painting the cabinet to match the wall, simply have the protruding trim sawed off flat. It looks like a cabinet stuck into a hole unless you add trim for the built-in look.
