Need advice for decorating small bedroom on budget
I live in a small 1960s era ranch house in Los Angeles. My second bedroom is approximately 9' x 11' and painted the same color as the rest of the house. I want to create a room which looks put together and inviting for sleep. My style preference is eclectic and modern.
Here's what I propose:
Remove the pix
Wallpaper the wall behind the bed
Replace the sconces with ones that look less industrial
New bedding and pillows
Buy rug
POSSIBLY replace the side table
The bed and simple window shades stay.

6 years agoThe first step is to find the bedding. I personally would never do wallpaper. Paint is so much cheaper and easy to change when your mood changes. Plus, it can be custom blended to match the bedding color exactly. Pull a color from the bedding onto the wall. Is the nightstand acryllic? I don't care for it, but whatever you get should arrive level with the mattress top. I think if you're keeping that bed, floating bedside table/shelves on either side would be nice.

Comments (11)lol... yes, they do still fit.. we had Rooms Plus make the bunk beds (no longer in business) One is home right now and says he can't bring girls over cause it's embarrassing. lol.. I did tell them that in college, kids sleep in bunk beds, and in the military and also in jail (rofl) so it's not really babyish! Part of the problem is that the furniture is soooooo heavy that it can barely be moved. However, I'd give it away if someone would figure it out and just take it. It's so big that maybe there would be so much room if all that bulky stuff was gone. Thank you for the ideas.. Comments (5)You have a pretty room but, apart from the painting, there are some issues to consider. Your curtains are too long, which affects the impact of the room negatively. The mirrors above your mirrored side tables with the crystal lamp bases are too much of a good thing. Find good-quality vertical pictures to hang there instead. I would leave the horses where they are, which seems a perfect spot for them. I would probably leave the bookcase there too, but it would need to be filled with books. There is hardly a room in the house that doesn't look warmer and more interesting with some books. The patterned chair would look better away from the patterned curtains. You could still hang a smaller horizontal picture above the bed. If you have oil paintings over the side tables and a watercolor or drawing over the bed. Can't have too much art in a room in my opinion. This room seems to call out for some warmer colors like yellow or red to balance the blues and grays, and those you can incorporate with the art you find. Comments (1)I am interested to find a way forward with cyan, purple and yellow! What a challenge. I have teen boys too. Some boys care a lot about how their room looks, some boys don't care at all---I have both in my house, ha. First of all, you need to add to this thread a room layout. That will help. Next, with those colors, I would think in terms of a yellow comforter, cyan (bright blue, right?) colored sheets, maybe, and a little dash of purple here and there. Maybe some art or a wall hanging/tapestry (or a rug) with those colors can give you something to pull colors from. Comments (2)Try Nancy Ingram's excellent floor plan. You can add a chair you've already got to see if he sits in it or just piles clothes and books on it. An Ikea Poang chair is inexpensive at $79 and fits tall people just fine. Many, many college students do homework white sitting on their beds, not at their desks, but they still need desks for books and papers. A $60-$90 "bed chair pillow " really works much better than two bed pillows for sitting up in bed to use the computer to do homework.
