Need new college bedroom layout/decor advice

My son decided to go to a local college and stay home for his first 2 years. We have a downstairs bedroom we would like to move him into and change into his “at home” college type bedroom. He has a new queen size bed it needs to fit I just can’t figure out which wall to put it in since it seems like only 2 real options. And also a 31”x49” IKEA dresser. Not sure if it’s clear in the room layout I attached but the room has 2 side by side closets on the right when you walk in that are each 46” wide and 23” deep - I’m thinking maybe make one into a desk/work area. Also, we are thinking we would like to mount the existing small TV for him but only cable access is on the empty large wall to the left and the wall with the only window so I feel like both cause the issue with where to mount that and have the bed. Wouldn’t mind adding a comfy chair if can find something really affordable for a tall kid and if seems like there would be enough space. Would love some ideas and/or pictures as I have no vision so really struggling with this but want to make as nice as we can for him but also affordable because the past year has been tough. So I think you are on the right track with making one closet into a desk area. You can always have the cable outlet moved to the closet. Here is the layout I would recommend. You will have to watch the size of any chair you would get because the space is limited. Maybe something like the one I have pictured. You may want to look at a graphic wallcovering for two of the walls. So many peel and stick options now.

Try Nancy Ingram's excellent floor plan. You can add a chair you've already got to see if he sits in it or just piles clothes and books on it. An Ikea Poang chair is inexpensive at $79 and fits tall people just fine. Many, many college students do homework white sitting on their beds, not at their desks, but they still need desks for books and papers. A $60-$90 "bed chair pillow " really works much better than two bed pillows for sitting up in bed to use the computer to do homework. The small tv may be wi-fi compatible or usable with an inexpensive Roku box instead of having the cable plugged into it. It could save you the cost of a cable tech service visit.

That CL dresser seemed really nice but something told me to not get it. I know I definitely need a dresser, and I also would like to get a writing desk, and then later on some art work to put over the desk, and eventually a chair perhaps. I was thinking of just focusing on dresser now so that it's won't be too overwhelming. I am willing to paint/refinish, I'm hoping it's easy enough for a first timer to do and I'm thinking maybe it would be cheaper but also willing to buy an already finished piece. I also need to think of the arrangement of the room before I buy anything. For ex, if I eventually move the bed to where that chair I had was, and using the wall by the window for a desk, I'm not sure where I would put the dresser. If I keep things the same now, I can put it where the stand if now of the left of the bed. I feel kind of lost with this whole thing now. Finding the right pieces is harder than I thought.

Pretty room! So, you are buying curtains and then making new bedding to match? Have you considered buying or making the bedding first and then adding the rest? There are many pretty, inexpensive bedding options. I think you are getting hung up on the curtain color. The bedding should be the main focus of the room, not the curtains. Natural textured curtains would look great with your room and you can add color with different rugs, art, pillows and a colored lamp. Which accent color do you like the best? A colored curtain in a muted color would work but something bright might steal all the attention in the room.

That looks way better. Now it's time to fix those poor curtains. To start with you might want to consider drapes that will block out light in case you want to sleep in some weekends. Next make sure that the panels are twice as wide as the windows. So a 60 inch wide window gets 2 panels each 60 inches wide. That will make the drapes drape not hang flat. Not done yet because those panels should just touch the floor. You can always adjust the height of the rod a little rather than hemming. Don't push the dresser up against the drapes. They should hang straight down. I'm not suggesting you get purple curtains but you could use a little color. Maybe a dark orange to work with the spread.

The reason I’m not crazy about navy is, that by doing gray on bed frame, you’re in a murkier palette— or softer— compared to crisp navy. So other colors that have that same softness or grayed value will look better. So if blues , then ones that are not as crisp and cool. Unless you do more careful color palette coordination, which is possible but in my experience is hard for a lot of people. Something like using a print fabric or a range of colors In artwork. But just random solids, not so much.
