12.5x23.8 tile for bathtub/shower/bathroom too big? photos?

We found a really nice Lino Blanco with greyish in it. My husband says it won't have as many grout lines but I worry about it being so big....will it look alright? Is it safe being so big and heavy!? It will go in our combo tub/shower and then around the bathroom half way up the wall. Is the size too big? Does anyone have photos of that size in their bathrooms? Thanks for any help and photos anyone can share. I do really like the color of it.

Not at all. We used 18x18 in our bathroom. friend of ours have 12x25. It looks really nice. In fact, I have started seeing even larger tiles in bathrooms and kitchens. The idea is to minimize grout.
Visually, larger tiles make a space seem larger.

Thanks pharaoh....I guess I'm trying to picture it when the tiler has to cut it to fit in in smaller spots...does it end up looking chopped up to fit? I am hoping someone has a photo they can share so I can rest easy!

sjhockeyfan, thank you very much for sharing your shower stall's information. So your shower base's width from wall to the step's inner edge is 28". What is your step made up of --- 2 bullnoses or tile and metal trims? Lotteryticket, thanks for your information. raehelen, appreciate your help. My contractor said with two bullnoses of 3" width, the step would be 6" wide. For 4" step, 32" wide shower stall would have a base space of 28" (32 - step width 4). But if I have 6" step, in order to have the base space of 28"(not including step width), I need to have a total width of 34" including step (28+6). So does your rectangular shower stall have a width of 28" not including the step? What are your steps made up of---2 bullnoses or tile and metal trims? It seems to me you could get away with a shower BUT it's going to have to be heads and shoulders above the rest for you to capture the audience your home would appeal to. A prepackaged walk in shower isn't going to work. Many retired adults have special needs. Getting in and out of a tub can be hard for them. So your shower needs to be big enough for large people to move in comfortable. Wheelchair accessable would be prefect. It should have a seat for aging bones to rest on or shower from and good sturdy handrails to help pull them up. Keep the height you must step up or down to get into the shower as low as possible a ramp type entrance/exit would be the best. Small details like these can make a difference to someone whose looking for a retirement home...especially if they have one of their parents living with them.

Devils advocate here because it happened to my brother's family recently. They live in an older neighborhood in a small college town in East Texas. The neighborhood is very desirable though, and property resale values stable, even with the new subdivisions springing up. They recently moved for Jobs and put sold their home. It had been updated cosmetically throughout. A large utility room had an enclosed acrylic shower they had redone in tile as well as the rest of the room updated. The hall bath had been a tub only when they purchased 10 years ago, but was short. They tore it out, shortened the 2 sink vanity to 1 sink, and put in a long, free standing tub on a base. The master bath is small with a double vanity, shower only with the toilet right next to it. They retiled the shower and did other cosmetic updates. All these updates were done 5-6 years ago. When the house went on the market, there was a big open house. Many buyers made comments that they did not like the shower only in the master while others didn't like the tub only feature in the hall bath. Needless to say, it was not an issue for many other buyers and there was a bidding war over the home and it sold very quickly. Do not remodel for what will work for someone else. It is not their home. They have their own home to do with what pleases them. If having a bath only bathroom works for you and your lifestyle, then by all means do that. How often do you have guests? Are you like a B & B or is it just an occasional person every few years? If a guest has a problem using a tub, they have an option down the hall. If that is too inconvenient for them as a guest in your home, there is always a hotel. Someone that high maintenance in your home may not be worth the hassle.

We are using 18 x 18 on our floor and 12 x 12 on our tub enclosure and our bathroom is only 5 x 7 excluding the tub. I think big tiles do make the room look larger and less grout is good too.

I think the tile you have selected sounds lovely. I am wrapping up a bathroom where I replaces 4x4 tiles with 12x12 tiles and I love the look. It minimizes grout lines and maximizes the focus on the tiles. I also agree that big tiles can make the space look larger by not breaking up the space quite so much.

As long as the thinset properly bonds, there should be no concern of tiles falling. There are some tile experts on this site that might have suggestions on techniques and/or products.

I believe your concern of cuts should be mostly resolved by a good tile setter. I would recommend specifically discussing this concern with your tile setter and asking him to share the layouts for your approval. I believe (from reading and minimal experience -- I'm not an actual expert) you want to try to avoid laying cut tiles that are smaller than half the size of the tile. I believe in most cases this should be possible, but it certainly takes some work up front to plan the layout.

pricklypearcactus: what a name! I will certainly let the contractor know about my concerns regarding the large tile not only the cutting of it but my fear of it falling on me.

thanks Bill....I am starting to feel a lot better after having people respond in a positive way...I did fall in love with this simple but yet attractive tile and I have been looking and looking for months. Whew...so will just make sure the tile installer does his part now.
