Jenn Air Oiled Bronze Refrigerator

I know "bronze" was the color of my old 70's brown appliances, but I really like the looks of this Jenn-Air fridge online. I haven't seen it in stores yet, though. Anyone have it? Think it would clash with medium stained cherry cabinets? The rest of my appliances will be stainless, and the fridge will be on its own wall of pantry cabinets. Since refrigerators only last 10 years or so nowadays, by the time I'm tired of the color, I can replace it!

You need to see this fridge in person, b/c it really looks AWFUL. It does not
look at all like the oiled bronze faucets, but has more of a wood grain appearance.

These are beautiful, definitely not 70's. No no. I don't have the brand or know about it but saw a little write up on these. Everything matches. We are going to renovate our kitchen so I've been looking but I am hopeless. I can't make up my mind on the style and I keep seeing new things! Pretty sure I don't want stainless.

I have a Kenmore SS fridge, made by Whirlpool. It's three years old and has never even flinched at us. We chose it because it was ginormous and has a very bright interior. While looking at some models, you could tell that you'd need a flash light if you put any food in there. I just bought my home and it came with the original 1982 Jenn-Air drop-in range / oven. I don't care for the down-draft ventilation at all. Whoever thought that up was an oaf. Functionally, after 25 years, it's "fair". There's one thing that should be mentioned: "Brand" is no guarantee of quality or reliability anymore. (And you asked about reliability). Most manufacturers contract out the manufacture of their parts, so Company A in China makes the leaded water lines for your fridge and Company B makes the valves for the gas stove. Someone else puts them all together and calls them the brand of the day. The Brands merely "spec" the parts and the manufacturers produce to specs. And if the CEO wants a bigger bonus, they can allow lower-quality plastics, etc, in the middle of a production run. What a Brand does get you is specific kinds of service and support. Bosch may jump all over the chance to wow you on the rebound of a problem, yet the Jenn-Air group may not.

The designer I'm working with really wants me to get a counter depth fridge. The one I have now is standard depth, it is beside a built in desk and doesn't stick out that much. I don't think the depth is a big issue. The major issue my current fridge is white. In my kitchen with golden faux finished walls, cherry cabinets and soapstone countertops, it sticks out. It is like the last hang over from my previous kitchen. To answer your original question, I am going to keep my old refrigerator in the pantry where I have a freezer now and move the freezer to the basement. But I haven't ruled out getting a bigger refrigerator but I would have to give up the cool oiled bronze finnish to do that. I would go either with black or a satin stainless steel that didn't smudge then.

In person, the ORB is a pretty yucky look. It looks like someone (badly) painted a tinted clearcoat over stainless. It smacked of "shadetree DIY painting" to me, as in, "Hey, lets see if we can paint a refrigerator that there oil rubbed bronze!" And I wouldn't take a JennAir appliance if you were to give it to me. They've had major issues with poor design and repairs, and since Whirpool acquired the brand 3 years ago, it's been the redheaded stepchild of the Maytag/Whirlpool consolidation. They just ddidn't know what to do with it. Now, they're trying to position Jennair as being above KitchenAid in quality and more "exclusive"---but they're gonna let Sears of all places carry it. Schizoid marketing. And, the thing is, the Jennair branded merchandise comes off the same assembly line as the Maytag or Amana, or even Magic Chef, and underneath that pricy logo, it really isn't any different than one of the Magic Chef's. But, the logo has a premium, and that premium is so not worth it.

They're just too close to the old 70's coppertone, but with a wierd sorta green undertone. Maytag intoduced a blue washer and dryer a few years ago that looked like the blue had been "colorwashed" over a white primer too thinly, and the washer and dryer were different colored blues even though they were supposed to match. The ORB appliances look like they were painted in that same factory with the same guys. They really look as if not enough paint was used to cover the primer and they're subtly different colors. Overall, it's not a look I cared for, and not one that is going to last long in the marketplace.

I saw it at my EXpo center, thought it was real nice and definately better looking than stainless! It looks like the color of a tootsie roll sort of? Definately has some grainy look to it but I did not think wood at all when looking. Almost looks like the delta ORB finish I think. I considered it but prefer wood panels...

I thought it was beautiful, and might go that way myself if I go w/traditional double oven instead of advantium. My cabinets will be off-white - I would suggest finding one w/a door sample. Not sure you want to mix it w/stainless oven, etc.

I did read a review (somewhere...) that said it scratched easily. It has a vertical texture to it, and I was afraid horizontal scratches would really show.

I noticed on the JA website photos that some of the OB appliances had vertical grain and some had horizontal, which I thought would look funny all together, but I'd just get the fridge. My range and dw will be stainless and located on the other side of the kitchen. I'll definitely snag a cabinet door to check the color first. Thanks for the input!
