Final question of the day...30 or 36 inch single wall oven

For those who bake a lot, is a 30 inch oven big enough for your needs? I am debating between 30 and 36, 30 gives more options in brands and more space in the island where the oven and warming drawer will go. I am planning to put a 12 inch slide-in cabinet next to it for baking trays and cutting boards...

Right now I have only a 27 inch oven which does not fit all my baking trays, but the 30 inch gives you 24 inside and that seems fine. Plus we use a huge Cuisinart convection toaster oven for 75% of our every day needs and the big oven is really mostly for weekends and entertaining...

Brands I am considering are Thermador, Dacor, Wolf (only if 36) and Electrolux.

I went from double 27" to double 30" and the 30" are plenty big enough for 1/2 sheet pans, large turkeys, etc. If you get a convection oven it can hold 3 pans of cookies at once. One factor you should consider is the 36" will take longer to heat up every time you use it. That should be weighed against the number of times you need the 36" instead of the 30".

A 36" takes a lot more time and energy to heat--unless you do a lot of big baking, 30" might be preferable.

We had the 36 foot (HAH) AG Wolf in our last house. We loved the unit and space up top but did often run out of burner space. The 36 inch oven was nice and held a lot which was great as long as we were cooking things at the same temp which we rarely ever did. Next, that oven took forever to preheat... 40-45 minutes to 400. Lastly, we think b/c of its huge capacity, it cooked really hot. I think the burners had to run a lot to keep it at temp which over cooked bottoms of breads etc. Great for roasts and some other things but not for breads, cookies, pastries etc. In the end though, we were VERY pleased with the Wolf. We adapted to the hot temps by using additional pans for heat shields and adjusting the temps. In our current house, we went with a 60 inch AG Blue Star range. It has 2 30 inch ovens, 8 burners and a grill. We also put in a Wolf 30 inch wall oven. The preheat on all 3 ovens to 400 is about 15-20 minutes. The first cookies and corn bread we did in the gas ovens. They were better than in the 36" Wolf but still cooked pretty hard. Next time I did corn bread, I thought, Oh yeah, I've got the wall oven and used it... a world of difference. Since then we have done biscuits and other items and they come out perfectly. We still find the gas is great for roasts, casseroles, reheating etc. We may have a bit of over kill, but due to advice from this forum, we specifically diversified to both gas and electric and have been very pleased. So, my recommendation? The 48 inch AG range AND an electric wall oven. Oh yeah, the grill on the BS is killer. I got talked into it as a last minute decision and thought I would use it occasionally. We have used it a fair amount so fay and it does a killer job on veggies and chicken. We have elected to limit the grill to those items only. Beef and fish are too messy and when we grill those, its always outside (so far). I have found a griddle plate that fits nicely over the grill to convert it to a griddle when needed.

Cathy: Every situation is unique. I was in the interior design and general contracting business for years so my perspective comes with a bit more bias on the esthetics than you will typically find on the appliance forum. As mentioned, every space is unique and in some kitchens a 36" range would look out of scale and tiny. In other situations a 48" would look ridiculous. Some kitchens require a 60". In my particular case, my kitchen begged for a 48", so I went with a 48" bluestar with a grill and a griddle. In my experienced opinion it is perfect for its space. I have a 54" hood with no upper cabinets (just open shelves) on my "range wall" which helps to not make things look too top heavy with the large hood. My range wall is also aprox 12 feet if memory serves correct so the 48 inch was a natural choice as it takes a nice even third of the space. Most, if not all, wall ovens are also very modern looking but therefor date themselves so if you have a traditional style kitchen it may not look so good down the road. From a function standpoint, I would have to agree with nyc. I think you would get the most versatile setup with gas range and electric wall oven. I will say tho, that the small oven on the bluestar is a champ. In my experience it gets very even and accurate temps. It fits a standard half sheet cookie sheet. To be honest I use the small oven more often then the large one. Another point....on the functional side of the equation, a 48" allows you to have a grill and griddle if desired. If you do go 36" route, my personal recommendation would be a grill. I love being able to grill inside, and this very very very cold and harsh winter we just had in ontario just reaffirmed that an indoor grill is a blessing in cold climates. I do like my griddle as well but a portable griddle can stradle the top of two of your burners on a 36" if a griddle is desired.

I went to see the Miele CSO and oven last Friday, and I really like the CSO especially it being plumbed the the XL is big enough. The interface is great, perfect for anyone that's new to steam ovens. The regular oven is pretty much just fine. However, I still like the Wolf's look more, Miele is more modern clean look while Wolf has more rounded edges and the warmth feeling to it...I know that's so superficial LOL! One thing I am curious is, the sales guys at either Pacific Sales or Pirch all told me they would recommend Wolf, even though Miele is a superior product. I wonder if they get a lot more commission when they sell Wolf?? Also, the sales guy said if I get Miele, it's best to get the Miele installation because Miele will double the warranty makes it 2 years instead of 1. Did you get that too?

@CPArtist, Thanks for your input! Again, I put up the layout for fun (since the original is, really, interesting/unusual). This will be the 6th kitchen we've designed--we know that it probably won't look like the average American kitchen. We've had the trash near the sink, and much prefer it in the island, where the vast majority of cooking scraps end up. We've also had wide aisles, and find that we prefer what we're used to, which are admittedly not what most people suggest. Too wide and we feel it's awkward. It's yet to be a problem for resale. To be clear, also, the design rendered above is my 'sketch,' not what the contractor etc are using to actually build and design. It is a general idea. For how we live, and cook, it's much more functional than the original with the stove facing the opposite way with air behind a false wall. Again, thanks for your suggestions! If you have any experience with a 24" oven that you loved, I'm really looking for opinions there.

Check the actual dimensions of the oven interior as they do vary by brand. Convention can also take up depth. Concealed elements vs. open elements can make a difference too. Once you narrow down your search do some comparisons.

Hi all,
Can someone help me figure out the difference in power and functioning in the induction cooktops.

I have decided to get a 36 inch induction and have been looking at the inductionsite website, but don't really understand what power to look at.

I am considering Wolf (5 elements, 2 boost) and Diva (5 elements no boost) and also Electrolux and Miele which are both 5 element, 5 boost. I can't figure out where there is power sharing and from a pure heat capacity per burner, which is better.

It seems that Wolf does have an advantage in higher capacity in the largest burner (without and with the boost). But I am really not sure I understand all the implications.

New Sub - if you truely want a 36" oven you can take half the brands off your list. Only Gaggenau, Dacor, Wolf, and Kuppersbusch make 36" oven available in the U.S.

The Dacor is really the only American sized 36" as the others are "pizza" ovens. They are wide and short, and top out at about 3 cu. ft. Only good if you like the look, or have really wide pans. You won't get as many cookies in them as you would a conventional 30"

Dacor's has about 4 cu. ft, but it's even smaller than Thermador's new generation 30" ers.

If you want to go 36", also consider Gaggenau.

We have the 27" Gaggenau convection oven, stacked under a Gagg Combi steam oven. This convection oven can take half-sheet pans & its true convection allows multiple dishes. A big roast can even be placed on the floor of the oven.

For flexibility, we opted for a 36" AG range to get 6 burners and a really big oven with infrared broiler. However, its oven does take much longer to preheat, so for most family meals we use the smaller Gaggs.
