does soundroofing bathroom walls work?

We're moving our master bedroom area to an area that's directly adjacent to our master bath (right now, we have closets in between the two). The bathroom sinks will be on the wall that is shared between bed and bath (plumbing for shower, tub and toilet on other bathroom walls). I do not want to hear water pipes from the bathroom while I'm still in bed and DH is already up for very early morning at work. Does "soundproofing" the walls really work?

Depends on how loud they sing in the shower.

The noise associated with water pipes is caused by excessive flow velocity from improperly sized pipes. If the pipes are properly sized based upon the fixture unit load value, even insulation should not be required.

It's not just the water in the pipes, but the sound of the water spray in general, too. If you're a light sleeper and trying to sleep in an adjacent room, those sounds can seem quite loud and can make it difficult to remain, or get back to sleep.

We will be reconfiguring our bathroom space, and will end up with the bathtub in the bathroom adj to our bedroom right up against the bedroom wall, so are interested in reading about soundproofing options as well.

Wooo!!! Cat, I am stuck at home because of the snow storm so wandered around here not looking at anything in particular and came upon your thread. I totally agree with you on the shower curtain choice. Regardless of whether I have the money to spare or not, keeping those suckers clean is a nuisance over time. We have a glass shower door that was installed back in 2003 and I can't tell you how much I hate cleaning it. Not that the door is all that dirty, but a shower curtain is way easier, and you can change the look/style whenever you feel like it. Can't do that with a pricey shower door. Anyway, everything looks lovely as usual, including the "prom" dress :-) Love, love those circular tiles, and the floor tiles that look like fabric. Gorgeous. What colour is that again? It looks greyish on my monitor.

For a bathroom of your size, a 110 cfm fan should be sufficient, providing it's actually exhausting 70 to 80 cfm. A part of your problem could be that the flex ducting is causing an increase in static pressure, which reduces the ability of the fan to move air. Changing the flex to smooth metal ducting might improve the fan's performance. You don't mention the type of roofjack or termination you have on the roof. Does it allow the exhaust stream to exit unimpeded? Does it have a back-draft flap? If so, is the flap opening properly? If it's stuck or doesn't open properly, that could be the source of your problem. Barring that, is the roofjack sized properly? If it's too small it could be constricting the air flow, which also increases static pressure, further reducing the efficiency of the fan. If you want to read a bit more about properly sizing a bathroom exhaust system, I recommend the Fantech website. It contains a great deal of good information for properly sizing and installing an effective bath exhaust system (be sure to check out the downloadable PDF files). The information you'll find there would apply in any setting, regardless of the exhaust fan brand you're considering or have installed. That being said, I have Fantech bath exhaust systems in all of my bathrooms. Not only do they operate in almost total silence, they are extremely effective. I never have a build-up of steam in my bathrooms, regardless of how hot or how long showers or baths go on. I haven't had a foggy bathroom mirror or condensation on windows in years. Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! You succeeded very well in getting the look you wanted while saving money along the way. Congratulations, and thank you for the pictures and great detail and supply list.

Always good to see what others have done in similar situations. Take a look at these and see if one of them could be used as a reference when you speak to the next glass guy. BTW IMO your design looks a bit overly complicated. Either go to the ceiling or don't and consider using the minimal frame support to securely anchor the panels and the door. I'd rather see the minimal frame that 20 supports.

Depends on what sound you are trying to deaden - & to what degree you would like to "deaden" -

- One of the most difficult sounds to deaden is foot fall
- easier would be the shower singer

In sound studios they use multiple layers of sheetrock of differing thickness and staggered seams - along w/lots of other materials (this may not be an option for you - unless all trim is being removed during remodel)

In a bathroom - re: water in pipe sounds - Old black iron pipe is far superior than the newer PVC pipe for deadening sounds sloushing through plumbing

Totally deadening all sounds is unlikely, very costly, and difficult to achieve in a typical home/master bath - too many obstacles that actually help transfer sound rather than deaden - best scenario is to plan soundproofing before building - In your case if you are doing a total gut you can get some good soundproofing built into plans -

- doors, windows, wallbaord adhered directly to joists/studs (**esp 1/2" which is what builders use), electrical boxes, hardwired lighting/fans, ductwork are all conduits to sound

- If it's just sink wall that you would like to deaden the sound - using iron pipe wrapped w/special insulation (NO GAPS!) and using Roxul (mineral wool) insulation in the interior walls may offer significant decrease in sound transferance btwn those 2 walls- Make sure they use at least 5/8" sheetrock - 2 staggered layers would be better

Try using "Quietrock" drywall. Expensive but it is the equivalent of 8 sheets of drywall on a wall.
I just used this in a lawyers office renovation we did with very good results.

Totally agree with jejvtr -- using cast iron drain pipe will eliminate a lot of noise from flushing toilets.

We have a 1975 split level home that has black pvc drain pipes. Whenever the upstairs toilet is flushed you can hear the "falling" water in the FR. We will be replacing just the pvc drops with cast iron. We're told you only need to replace the vertical drop portion, not the entire drain system.
