Building a Home

New poster - real excited!

Hi eveveryone. I just found this forum and am really glad I did. Everyone has some good thoughts, and considering the 2 billion decisions that go into building a house, it is good to get others take on things.

We had plans made so this will be our perfect forever house. I am sure there are plenty of things we didn't think of. We are now putting up retaining walls. It is so exciting to finally see progress being made! We would love to be moved in by Christmas. I sure hope we make it.

Welcome! I am a newbie too, we're hoping to break ground by summer. This forum has already been a wealth of information, it will definitely help you throughout the course of your build.

Welcome to our gang and nice job on your tipsy pots! The watering can idea is great! I put one set of the pots in my back yard and one in the front. Tho I painted the ones in the front and thought I'd decorate with seasonal flowers. Unfortunately I have a black thumb along with living in ARIDzona, so silk flowers are what I have to put in mine. Not near as nice as the real thing. I found an angel at GW with a hole in the bottom, and stuck that on top of my pole. Doesn't show in this pix. But next tipsy pots are getting a watering can for sure. Hope to see more pix and posts from you soon. Karen

I thought I should do a follow up on Faraway Flowers. Just got my order yesterday and I was particularly pleased not only with the quality of bulbs, but also the size. The shipping was delayed because of inclement weather, and as a customer I was notified promptly. I ordered each of the Japanese (OT) Hybrids from them and they were enormous bulbs. 24 cm as advertised. I also received a couple of the double orientals and was particularly pleased at the quality (compared to the gift I was given for Christmas from Dutch Gardens of the double oriental mix, which two of them came soft and compost-worthy :(). The roots from Dutch Gardens, came, as per usual, shriveled up. The ones from Faraway Flowers had active root systems, as if they were just dug and sent the day before. I was pleasantly surprised (and I love that). For those of you familiar with Buggy Crazy, that was the size of bulbs these Japanese Hybrids were. I was very impressed with this company and hope to shower you all with fabulous photos this summer of my great finds from my favorite lily growers and vendors. My lot is covered in them, especially plentiful in areas where I've done less digging. The seeds are spread around by ants...an immature plant has only one leaf, and will not produce a flower until it has two leaves. How long that takes, I'm not sure. When I first moved here ten years ago, all those single leaves popping up in the spring really bothered me, and I'd try to cover them up with wood mulch. Now I appreciate them for the native beauties they really are. They disappear by summer.

Basketweave questions from a new poster

The quality in this has to do with how free the tile is from imperfections. It doesn't mean it will hold up better. I saw a better quality basketweave today, and it looked sterile. More like unglazed tile than marble. Quality in Carrara has to do with no yellow tones, consistant grain, and backgroud color. I like this tile better as it has more warmth. It's, it's own look. It really shouldn't be called Carrara as it's beautiful marble in it's own right. Italian Carrara can be very gray, and dingy. that's the way it's running now. Here's another basketweave that I think is more modern. Has larger darker tiles which make it stand out more against the field tile. It's $9 a sf. + shipping. From a seller called Oracle on Ebay, although he's not selling this tile now. Here's a photo.

Welcome! This is a great place to hang out especially after all your friends are tired of hearing about THE house. You will find that every once in while you are going to hit a bad spell. These great people will help you back off from the cliff.

We are moving in to our house this week. It is an exciting journey that you are starting.

Thanks everybody! Our next big decision is picking the brick color. Just looking at it is enough to make my head spin! Who knew there were so many colors of brick?

To make it even more difficult I am on cruches so it's really hard to look at everything on the site the way I want. I wanted to be jumping up and down I was so happy we had started, but I held back. I figured if I fell it would just slow things down.

Have you taken your kitchen layout to the kitchen forum? It's a great resource, too. I can agree that these forums are great places to be and ask questions when everyone you know, including your kids, are tired of hearing you obsess and consider options!

Welcome Bamagirl! We moved into our new house a year ago, but I still come here to see what's going on and see what questions I can help with. I have to say that brick color was one of the hardest decisions to make... next was paint color. Good luck!
