Are under counter hoods really that bad?

Our current kitchen was designed in the 70's and has completely obstructed views. So...one of the main goals for my wife and I as we redesign was to ensure site lines. I no longer want to bend down to see who's talking to me as a cook the holiday meal in the kitchen. The designer we are working with is pushing against a down-draft/under counter hood, even though we can vent directly outside (approx 8 foot run, with no bends), mount the blower to the outside wall (under a deck so it won't be obtrusive) and we are getting an induction cooktop (on island) so pulling of gas flame won't be an issue. Am I missing something? Are these types of hoods not effective. Are traditional hoods just such a beautiful focal point that we'll regret not having one later? Any words to the wise?
