Suspect fill solenoid obstruction or failure. Common occurrence and easy fix. There won't be any filter there. Don't trouble-shoot it. Just replace it.

Could also be main-board malfunction -- signal not being sent to solenoid -- but that would be less common. Also much more expensive to fix.

Competent tech could diagnose definitively in minutes.

Thanks for info. This is the third time this has happened, my husband dinked around with it and it was magically fixed. Not this time.
We live about 60 miles away from the nearest technician and he wants $250 just to come down. We were hoping to alleviate that expense by doing it ourselves.Thanks again asolo.

If your husband "fixed" it twice before, almost certainly not main-board. Upon this report, now suspect intermitting fill-solenoid. Intermitting problems are biggest nuisances, aren't they?

Since you're some distance from service, suggest describing via telephone what you've experienced. You may receive reasonable "diagnosis by phone".

Continue to believe problem is simple one.

asolo - I wasn't questioning your diagnosis, I happen to think that is the problem here myself.

What I am questioning is your characterization that this is a COMMON problem with Miele DWs - and I have been through a fair amount of units personally and professionally to back it up.

If you have experienced a high failure rate over sever hundred units over the last 10 years, I know an engineer that would like to explore why the units that go through your system are experiencing that.

Actually, in my experience, hardly any DW's of any brand have had any problems ever. However, among those few that have had problems, in my experience, fill solenoid issues have shown to be the culprits with some frequency....that is, have been "common". In my experience, the issue has always been easy to diagnose and cheap/easy to fix. That is why I used the word "common"....which I continue to think is quite appropriate in context.

I did not say "common problem with Meile DWs". Not slamming you or Miele. I'm not a professional and I certainly don't feel any particular need to back anything up.

YES, I think you do need back up that statement since I questioned it with actual facts to back up my statements.

Don't want people reading a thread assuming something that may not be accurate because they don't cogitate over what might be going on inside your head. They will read what's posted and then go walking down the primrose path saying "ya know, I read on the internet that miele's have intake issues" ....

"so, I'll probably want to consider a brand that doesn't have those issues"............"but wait, all dishwasher commonly experience filling problems, so I should probably not buy one at all and just wash stuff by hand"
