Scratch on my induction cooktop.

There is a scratch on my black induction cooktop. (Please excuse the dust - my kitchen is in a construction zone.)

My father, who previously owned a smooth glass electric cooktop, said he thinks scratches can be buffed out.

1. Do you know if that's true?

and

2. Do you know who I should call to get ahold of a scratch-buffer-person? An appliance store, perhaps?

It's not a huge or deep scratch. But Inotice it! It's kind of like when you get your first little scratch on a new car. You are sick over it for a few days but eventually you get past it.

Congrats Tinker! Isn't induction wonderful? My 30" Thermador is due to be delivered this Wednesday. Can't wait to see it! I have been cooking on a single burner portable induction unit for the last 5 days and I am thoroughly impressed also. Regarding induction cookware, keep an eye out for when Sears has a special sale on their Kenmore Elite 8pc Triply Clad cookset. It is not kept in their standard stock, but becomes available only for special seasonal sales. It is a beautiful and high quality stainless set, comparable to AC, but sells for $100 when on sale. I love it! Picked my set up over Mother's Day. I keep looking for it to buy another as a gift but Sears CS says it will only come out a few times a year. I had to give up my extensive set of Caphalon anondized, but the induction is worth it! Glad you are enjoying your new cooktop... now start cooking with it and you will love it even more! :)

Another thing - We have the frameless cooktop and I now regret it. Our pop-up downdraft is installed at the head of the cooktop. I had my first spill-over this week while cooking rice on a back burner. I caught it in time, but had I not, the stuff would have gone right down the front of the downdraft unit, under the cooktop. Eeeew. At that moment, I regretted not having the frame to catch it. Hindsight is always 20/20. If you don't have the pop-up downdraft, but have overhead venting instead, it's not an issue.

I have just insisted that they put in the wiring (50 amp) in our rebuild for induction even though I can't afford a new range right now. I have my eye on a hugely expensive (for us anyway) and totally impractical Bertazzoni. What brand have you got? Are you happy with the oven as well as the induction top? We have an electric smooth top now and I can really sympathize with you funky. Our top stayed pretty nice for years thanks to my DH who seems to find relaxation in scrubbing the top after every meal, but even so, it is now starting to show scratches and rings. Good luck!

Are the lights on a dimmer? It might be producing lots of powerline "hash" -- that is, radiating noise of various frequencies well into the radio frequency range back into the powerline. Presumably your cooktop is unusually sensitive to such noise. Another possibility is that the power supplies in the lights themselves are the source of the noise. Or, it could be the combination of this particular dimmer and these particular lights. If you have the lights on a dimmer, I would first try replacing the dimmer with a conventional snap switch, and see if the noise abates or disappears. If it does, try changing to a different brand or type of dimmer. If they're not on a dimmer, I'd try disconnecting all the lights from power, then adding them back in one by one, to see if any single light is the source. Line powered LED lights have switching power supplies built in, to convert 120vac (or 240vac in other countries) to the lower voltage that LEDs need. It's possible that one of your light units has defective noise filtering in its power supply. If they all make noise, it would be pretty surprising, because the page you linked to seems to say that they meet regulatory requirements. I'm not familiar with Canada's, though, so I don't know how complete their compliance is. If the easy fixes above don't work, you may be stuck with either replacing all the lights, or changing the cooktop. One possible "quick fix" before going that drastic route might be to install a noise filter. I would wire it in ahead of the lights, maybe in a cellar junction box. I've never had to do this, so I don't have a specific recommendation. However, a quick web search turned up this one, which is supposed to be wired in ahead of noisy devices when they're interfering with an X10 home automation system. Others here may have their own recommendations for noise filters. Please let us know how it goes.

Call the manufracturer and see what brand of polisher they recommend and if it would remove scratch marks. Some manufacturers recommend Cera-Bryte, but that is mostly for cleaning.

Also, many cooktops are different. Some are ceramic, some glass-based, etc. Best to call the manufacturer for advice.

The issue you have is that you may also buff out the anti-slip/friction coating on that surface (the litte dots). And that will make things worse.

At best you can buff out the area outside of the circle.

If it were me, I would live with it and then replace it later when other scratches showed up on it :).

Oskiebabu: Great idea. I just looked in the owner's manual and it says:

Be careful not to slide pots and pans across your cooktop. It will leave metal markings on the cooktop surface. These marks are removable using the CERAMA BRYTEÂ® Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner with the CERAMA BRYTEÂ® Cleaning Pad for Ceramic Cooktops.

It also recommends CERAMABRYTEÂ® Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner for everyday cleaning of the cooktop.

So I guess I'll shop for that in my local stores this week!

My appliance dealer recommended "Cook Top Cleaning Creme for Smooth Top Ranges". I have found that it is so much easier to use than Cerama Brite. It seems to clean much better too. OK, they are probably the same stuff, but I really did notice a difference - not as much elbow grease and hid the scratches better.

Here's to someting working for you - I was sick about my scratches, so I know pretty much how ya feel.

Use a silpat under the pot...I use it on my induction cooktop and it prevents the scratches from my cast iron cookware.

I found some info on polishing glass, linked below. I think you'll have to live with the scratch on the nubby area but, hopefully you can improve the area outside the burner spot.

Don't know the specific material the cooktop is made out of...whether it is softer or harder than glass so I'd approach any attempts with a very light hand and lots of caution.
