Then have them add a few square feet of Kerdi (or some other) membrane under the tile just outside the shower. Kerdi is only 8-mils, or 8/1000ths of an inch thick. All you're looking for is for any incidental wetness to not saturate the grout and wet the tile underlayment. FWIW, my shower is doorless, I did the same just outside my shower. My shower curb is sort of a raised platform, it serves as a drying off area for stepping out of the shower and tub, as well as serving as a raised step to step into the adjacent tub. Nothing more than Kerdi underneath the tile. Although mine is, yours does not have to be intergrated with the shower's sloped membrane. It's not pitched for slope, it's just there for insurance.

Yes, I have moved past the tub where they say it is not suitable, and am considering the Audrey by MTI, linked in my last post. This one they DO say is suitable as a shower/tub, but it also does not have an integral tile flange. It does have an option for a factory installed 3 sided tile flange, however, and I am waiting for word from them on if they still fully warranty this tile flange. It seems to me that if it carries the same warranty as an integral flange, it isn't a ridiculous thing to consider (they also sell a site-installed flange, which costs less - I am hoping paying a little more for factory installed gets you a warranty but am waiting to hear). The reason I am considering such tubs is because I have not found any tubs that are true alcove tubs in the style that we like. They tend to be more traditional, and our house and design style is contemporary - everything I have found seems to be influenced by crown moulding, with ridges and other elaborations that don't mesh with modern design. Unfortunately, the traditional styles are more mainstream and easier to find materials for - to do contemporary, you often either have to pay sky high prices or get creative using things in ways that are other than they were intended, but still work. . .nothing wrong with that, I don't think, as long as you manage your risks. . .such problem solving is fun, when you get to workable solutions (and extremely frustrating if you don't and have to make compromises that make you unhappy). However, if anyone has any of the "appropriate" tubs in a very simple, modern design that are not more than 60", I would love some more ideas, so please pass them along.

5x5 plenty big for two - i find even 4x4 feels roomy. 5x5 would leave room for a bench seat along the back wall, if you put two showerheads on the opposite wall (or one large showerhead in front and/or above). I much prefer the side-by-side arrangement to one showerhead each on opposing walls, which usually leaves you showering back to back rather than alongside each other.

I have a square basement shower (~38x42") that we changed to having frameless glass. There is water spray pretty much constantly on the door during my daily shower. The water bounces off my body onto the doors and when I’m whipping the handheld around, the door gets inadvertently sprayed. I have a fixed panel and a door that swings in and out. Like the other poster mentioned, there is a plastic strip (vertically) between the fixed panel and swinging door. No water seems to get through this vertical space. There is also a plastic strip (horizontally) at the base of the swinging door. There used to be two sort of layers of clear strips but one peeled off so now there’s just one strip which deflects the water somewhat but not entirely. When I finish showering (and squeegeeing the door), there is always a little puddle of water sitting on the curb but no water seems to spill over onto the bathroom floor. It’s just part of my routine to wipe the curb before I get out of the shower.
