Crown molding on an angled ceiling

We have a pretty typical situation. We have an opened floor plan with the 2nd floor overlooking the family room. So you have a vaulted ceiling in the family room with the outer 1/3 of the ceiling flat at 20ft and then sloping down for the remaining 2/3 to about 12 feet. The entire room is about 18 feet deep. There is already crown molding on the 2nd floor. I wanted to bring the crown molding into the family room and bring it down the slope (slope part about 12 feet) and have molding on the horizontal wall.

Is this really a faus pas to have crown molding on a slope? I think it will look good. The link has an example of what I'm referring to.

the biggest problem with crown on a vault, is not on the vault part, or even against the flat part on the second level, because both of these ceilings are 90 degrees to the wall. The problem lies at the bottom of the wall, where the crown cannot make up the height difference of the pitch of the ceiling.
It will take a plinth block of sorts in the corner to make up the differential height, and even then, the bottom piece of crown will not intersect the sloped ceiling correctly.

Yes, I understand it is very difficult to do. I have a carpenter who is up to the task. My main concern was whether crown on a sloped ceiling was against some unwritten rule or a faux pas. thanks

You can attack it from a couple of different angles... If the crown is all the same, then you can consider it all "room crown", and you can then paint it all creamy white. I have seen instances where the crown is all the same and the color simply transitions to blue at the soffit-to-cabinet crown miters. Your choice. I prefer to make the two crowns different though, making the cabinet crown smaller than the room crown. With the cabinet crown minor to the more major room crown, cope the cabinet crown to butt into the room crown. Paint the room crown white and the cabinet crown blue. Much depends on the size and styles of the crowns, etc, how they meet up, how they relate, etc. But it really boils down to your personal preference. The good news? It's only paint. Easy to change if you decide to change your mind.

The pictures should show you how it is possible. My dining room is shaped like the pics and we knew it would be hard to do because of the angles so we actually hired someone to do it for us. Normally we do all the regular molding but the wierd angles are really frustrating even to a professional. In our first home we actually did entire home ourselves but brought a guy in to do our bay window area. It was easier to pay for that small job than to frustrate ourselves.

You can screw metal joist hangers to the studs, figure out the angel your crown molding will set out from the wall, then cut blocks at that angel and attach them to the joist hangers. Cut a grove in the top of the block to run your rope lighting. If the work is going to be inspected, you might want to run the plan by the city building dept. Tauton puts out some books about crown molding, but that may or may not be covered. Someone else may have a better idea. You might be required to use blocking between the studs.

I would have loved to cut it nested but the crown is 6 3/8 and to big to be cut on a jog or in my miter saw. That's te only reason I'm cutting it flat. I actually tried the setting do posted previously and they did not work so I'm back to square one. I have the whole bottoms floor done except for these 3pcs I am still trying to figure out the angles and setting on. When replacing the baseboards I had the same problem but I just used the old piece I was replacing and put those in my miter saw and copied the angles and it was easy. :)

I don't think it's a "faux pas", but it's a question of whether it will look good. Why not have the guy nail up a strip of crown where you'd put it to see if it looks good. I suspect it will break up the ceiling/wall in an odd way. If you want differentiation, change colors of paint there.

Here is a link with pictures. The 4th picture in rows 1 and 3 show crown molding on a slope. This house is very similar to mine. I think it looks good in the pictures but I've been knownto go with something only to later look back and say "what was I thinking".
