Comments (7)When I was starting our DIY kitchen remodel, I decided to get a compound miter saw. After researching it I got a Hitachi 10" sliding compound miter saw. One thing I learned is that some people feel that for doing detailed work, a 10" is better than a 12", since the 12" blade can wobbly slightly. One thing that definitely makes CMS's more suited to the task is since they are more portable, you can set them up right near where the task is, rather walking down to the shop and back upstairs for each successive cut. Also I am prejudiced against radial arm saws since my high school shop teacher would frequently and loudly state: "Radial Arm Saws are only good for one thing: sawing off your own arm, that's why they call them radial arm saws."...See MoreMolding to mimic the look of crown
Comments (20)My house was built in 1891 and designed by a Boston architectural firm and was considered significant enough to be published in an architectural supplement to Scientific American the next year. It has picture rails close to the ceiling instead of crown molding in all of the bedrooms. The second owner didn't understand what they were and tried to caulk the joint in one room but the rest of them survived and I am the third owner. The living room has a picture rail down a foot from the ceiling with a large plaster cove above it. Other first floor rooms have large built-up crown moldings. Comments (1)Hi, The best I can help you with is this table of angles; you will find the compound settings for 135* wall angle in this table. Since you have no way of tilting the saw the other way, you will have to make 1 cut (maybe two) upside-down; to do this right you will need to shim the molding flat on the saw table with small rips of scrap material, so the molding doesn't tip. Comments (5)A few days late to this thread, but since I just did one small room of CM, & am about to do a more complex room (w/ my brand new/used miter saw this time!) I thought I'd share the best info I found on mitering crown molding w/o coping. After watching his video & reading the site, I d'loaded this fellow's ebook ($20) & it was worth every penny to me. He made the upside down & backwards description a pleasant walk in the park, where for me the whole coping thing was like a trip to Mars. With foreign language guides. Maybe it's just me. But I have decent looking CM in the bath I did, just using my miter box, so I look forward to having perfect looking CM in my living room (w/ no square corners) now that I have the ability to cut my miters at 43, 44, 47, etc. with the miter saw :) Here is a link that might be useful: Cutting Crown Molding...See Moresloyder
