Scott's PDF file is really helpful reading. I live in the same general area, outside Washington DC, and will add a few comments. Nanking cherries: you need two trees, they are tasty but small -- pea size. They ripen early and seem to avoid pest problems. Sour cherry was not mentioned. I think the natural dwarf North Star is an excellent choice. I have had few problems with it. You will need to net it against birds, but it is such a small tree this is easy to do. Squirrels will strip pear trees -- it happens to me every year. I have also had codling moth on my pears. This can be avoided by bagging, but that requires more work. I agree that Asian pears are easy to grow and start producing early. I have not had any major fireblight issues. Squirrels will also strip fig trees, if the birds have not ruined your crop first. Persimmons are a big yes. But the earlier ripening ones, which means the non-astringent ones, do get hit hard by the marmorated stink bug (as does pretty much everything else that ripens, say, before late September). Late ripening astringent ones like Saijo are the way to go. I have had no insect or animal damage on these. Scott does not mention berries. Blackberries are easy to grow though may need to be trellised. They are attractive to birds though. Blackcurrants are easy to grow and do not appeal to birds or squirrels, or that matter, humans either when fresh, but they are superb as jelly and in various culinary applications. Elderberries are easy to grow, but again are not for fresh eating. Birds love them. Cornelian cherry are very slow growing. Russian pomegranates are now being sold by Isons, the muscadine nursery. I received very nice plants for very reasonable prices this year. They may be sold out now.

Long day. Its finally stopped about 11PM. 12" here, and probably very close to that at National Airport. Still lots of wind and blowing and drifting, but the skies are now clear. Yesterday, up until about 4am it was a "warm storm" with temps around 32. Its been below 20F since about 8am here. The snow held and held and held on for longer than expected. This was definitely the storm of a lifetime, EVEN IF we had not had the 2 feet here last weekend, just the sheer conditions this storm produced, especially the whiteouts, and the near hurricane force winds along with 4-6 foot drifts, countless downed trees...etc. etc. etc. was a once in a lifetime event here in the Mid Atlantic. However, since we did have 2 feet on the ground already, it was just all the more historic. TZ7, Be safe! I hope you guys dont get it as bad as we did here, especially in terms of the winds. Many of our streets look like the photos you posted, and some were with downed traffic signals. Post more pics if you can! Suffice it to say, all of my palms, including the large trachy in the pot wrapped in plactic and xmas lights, are buried. The in ground palms were buried as of last saturday, and now they are under 3 feet. My smaller trachy unfortunately had spear pull, although that may be more attributed to the fact I left the xmas lights on it one day when we hit 49, and the palm cooked to well over 100F im sure. It somewhat dessicated after that, and has not looked good since. I think these storms just pushed it over the edge. Well see if I cant get it to come back. Ok Im going to bed. The Mansion on site dates from about 1925 and was designed by John Russell Pope. This is the headquarters of the Audubon Naturalist Society. (Not really a garden. Some of the grounds are landscaped but mostly it is kept wild for birdwatching. They do have nice events, including a Winter Crafts Fair in early December...the ed.) What a wonderful place to refresh your soul and view 60 acres of naturalistic gardens and views. There's a tram with narration one can take or just stroll the grounds. Well worth an overnight stay. The tour of the mansion was extremely interesting as well.

No experience with the Southern Indica Azaleas here in zone 7a, but you could look into Encores 'Autumn Belle', 'Autumn Twist', or 'Autumn Chiffon'. They seem to have a similar look. I grow a few of the Encores - mostly the deep purple ones. They need just a bit more sun than regular azaleas -- but not too much! I think I prefer the Boom-a-thons though. But honestly, there are so MANY hardy azaleas for the Mid-Atlantic. Any of the Girard Hybrids are amazing. And I have a real soft spot for the Satsuki types with their large waxy flowers and late blooms. Especially one called 'Chinzan', which blooms in late May I think. It spreads to form a wide cushion no more than 18" high. Some of the Azalea yedoense var poukhanense varieties, will give you those huge flowers early in the season. There might just be one of these that has a similar look. Extremely hardy too.
