What height for plugs in mudroom?

We are all framed in and the electricians are about to finish in a few days. We are still unsure about the mudroom. We want to put in a charging area somewhere and thought about putting plugs in the cubbies but are unsure what height to have the electricians place the plug receptacles.

What height should the receptacles be and should they be in each cubby place?

This is pretty much how the mudroom looks. We are going to put a desk to the right of the bathroom with a shredder/recycling bin/mail center/etc.

And we are thinking of putting the cell phone chargers either in the desk area near the mail center or in the cubbies?

What do you think?

How would you design the mail center in that space? I want it so I can have door that close it because I know myself and it WILL be messy no matter how much I say I will keep it clean :)

Thanks for your help. Any mudroom/mail center pics would be helpful.

How are your cubbies designed? One person on here had a shoe section at the bottom, followed by a tall area with hooks, followed by a short area with a flip down drawer front type cover (this was where the plugs were in each individual cubby) and then another square area at the top for a basket for gloves, mittens, etc.

I would think the plugs would need to be by a shelf in the cubbies so the phones/cameras/etc. can charge without dangling cords. . .

If you are worried about the desk area keeping clean (I can relate!), to me it is another reason to move the charging station out of there. The more in and out there is, the more likely the door will be left open, and that just adds to the clutter :)

It's going to be hard to get the required receptacle(s) in there - I'm not up on latest code, you might need 2 b/c of the size of the island. Used to be no more than 12" below the countertop with no more than 6" overhang. Of course, the higher the receptacle and the less the overhang the safer and more convenient it is to use. No face-up receptacles (I'm not sure how Sill-lites qualify - are they pop-up?) on the countertop. Edit: Sorry, just saw you said 12" overhang on 2 sides. If you can cut the pantry side down to 6" you could put one there. I originally thought you had drawers on that side too but now I can see blue so that's all open. If you don't actually need seating (knee room) there that would be perfect solution, I'd run Plugmold the whole length and you can use that side for buffet serving (though personally I don't like cords hanging over the edge of counter, if they were close and you secured the excess with a rubberband or twist tie it would do. AFAIK, once you have the required receptacle(s) (check if it's 1 or 2 for that size), you may have as many other receptacles as you want in the island. I have 1 (that serves as junction box for my Plugmold) at regular "wall height" on the pony wall that my countertop extends over for seating, I don't use that for small appliances but do find it convenient when vacuuming. Hmmm. Well, I will start with your cubbie design. I am concerned with your under-bench area. Are those meant to be shelves? And, what will their purpose be? I'd probably instead opt for just open floor there--easier sweeping and easier retrieving of "lost" shoes (think about a 3 yr olds shoe getting pushed all the way back in one of those narrow shelves. You'll never find it and/or have to bend all the way over to see it and to reach it...) (I'm tall, so generally don't like deep narrow places where things get lost--think deep kitchen pantry cabinets without rollouts...) Is your broom closet accessible from within the mudroom area, or on the other side? I am not clear on that. I would use your "opposite" side for hooks for guests. And, I'd put beadboard in that area as well. I'd line the beadboard all along the wall of the entire cubby (up into the upper shelving area at the back, too). I think I'd wrap the bench around the far end (where it is only 37" wide), but maybe not wrap the cubbie portion. Hmm... hope that makes sense! And, that is just what I'd probably do.

You might be able to get everything you want in that closet if you rework the storage. The Elfa units are similar in size to the IKEA ones, I just know how the IKEA ones work. They come in widths of about 16",25" or 32" (accounting for the width of the rails they mount on.) It looks like you have two storage areas in the closet. One with the tall white cabinet, and another with the red basket, some drawers and more coats? The thing about the modular system is you can get a lot more on them because you can add more shelves and have no wasted space and add baskets to hide stuff. Plus they are on the wall so it keeps the floor clear and you can move things up and down based on kids growing height for reaching. As far as the corner it's nice to have a small bench for putting on shoes. I like to keep the kids stuff separate, because I need space for many of the things you do. Mail, return stuff, etc. and I don't want it cluttered with their stuff. The place I see backpacks now....is that the 3'7" wall? It looks like there are two walls angled. You could build up floor to ceiling on one angled wall, have shoe space, place to hang bags/coats and keep the kitty stuff underneath and maybe place a bench on the other angled wall with a mirror or something. You have a lot of options and space it just depends what you want it to look like. I would think of zones. One place to keep room for guests to come in and place things, a place for all of your things, and a place for the kid's stuff. IT's easier to keep organized when everyone has their own zone to drop in. I'm more of an organizer than a decorator!

Awesome ideas so far - thanks all! For those with questions about layout- The white door in the room is a side entrance. Our front door is a little visible in the photos too (darker). But there is separation. So, this room is off to the right when you enter from the front. The side door swings towards the coat closets so no issue to put desk along the wall. - The windows face the front of the house … west facing house (might miss the sunny views if I do my back to it). The size of this room is 13x13. I love the ideas for an accent wall for the desk area opposite closets. Also love to extend it wall to wall, or an L shape to make it a more prominent space). Use large baskets for clutter, and/or within desk drawers. Area rug for some separation. Here’s an extra pic of the side entrance wall…lighting looks off at night. Looking to replace canned lights too. And eventually a more stylish fan. Thanks all.

Agreed with Athens. Our electrician coiled the wires in the area - for install after the cubbies went in.

Have you considered putting a recharging zone on the wall just to the right of the door? Seems like that might be a good place for keys, cell phones, and other small items that you don't want to accidentally leave behind. An 8" deep wall shelf there (hung right at eye level) with a row of electrical plugs behind it would give everyone a spot to recharge AND it would be the last thing you'ld see before walking out the door.

If not that, then I think Athens has the best idea. You don't want cell phone wires getting tangled up with coats and scarves.
