Help! Our pedestal sink broke...

...and we need to replace it. It was a Kohler made of china (I think). My husband dropped something in it and now it has a giant hole. Which leads me to wonder about sinks and sturdiness. Any recommendations or advice? The bathroom is fairly small--current, broken sink is about 22" wide. TIY.

Not sure what your question is. Are looking for recommendations for a pedestal sink that will fit in your space?

Here's a link with some options in the 21-23 inch width, ranging from traditional to modern. If you have room for a 24" wide top, there are many more options.

Thanks for the link! I am looking for recommendations and I can fit a 24" wide sink. I'm worried about having another broken sink, since we have a house full of clumsy people! We have a fireclay sink in the kitchen, which seems much more solid, so I thought maybe a fireclay bath sink was a possibility. After further investigation today though, I wasn't really able to find any fireclay sinks for our size and budget. (both small)

When we did our remodel I emptied the storage...and found most of the stuff had been lurking there for years. When you pitch the stuff you don't use - you know the half bottles that you never use but couldn't quite throw out, the soap someone gave you that you never liked the scent of etc - it sure cuts down on the space you need. For our pedestal sink we opted for a Neptune (Canadian company) Delight sink as it had a built in towel bar around it. I hang my (small) hair dryer from it as well as the hand towel and cleaning cloth. The more space you have the more junk you store,,,in my humble opinion. Sally

I have a bathroom the same size and originally had ordered a 27" Kohler pedestal Memoirs sink too. As the installation was happening I realized it was going to be way too close to my glass shower doors and had visions of bumping into them forever after every time I used the sink. So I switched to the 24" size. It fits but the bowl is quite noticeably smaller. It works okay but to be honest if I had the chance to do it again I'd probably do some more serious sleuthing for a 24" sink whose bowl was a little larger. It is much smaller than the 27" size. My advice is, if possible, try to compare both so you know exactly what you are giving up. I agree with you though, I don't think having the sink touching a wall on one side is going to look very nice-and if you set it up that way, you may end up with the same ergonomic issue (having it too close and bumping into it with hands/arms). i am a fabricator. Your stone is one we do regularly and not one that is particularly "chippy". My guess is those chips are from strikes from hard objects. In my shop we make the edge radius on the sink cutout larger (3/8") to make it less susceptible to chipping. Going forward you need to get your family members to be a little more cautious moving things into and out of the sink. Good news is your fabricator has epoxies that can be color matched to your stone such that a good repair will be hard to detect once it's complete. In my shop we repair chips at no cost as long as the customer is willing to wait until we are in the neighborhood. Perhaps yours does the same.

Couple of thoughts:

You might be able to save quite a bit of money by replacing just the top (basin) part if the pedestal part is still OK.

From what I've read, fireclay is more resistant to heat (like draining your boiling spaghetti water into the kitchen sink), but I don't know if it's any more resistant to damage from impact than the other types of sinks.

I sympathize with you on the clutziness. We have a lot of that at our house, too!
