Please help granite pieces broke off

Hi all! We recently bought a home and had a new kitchen installed with new granite countertop. We went with river white granite. The granite was installed September 2016. Today I noticed we had a few small under an inch pieces break off on the edges area of the sink. I have not leaned or hit the edges of the granite around the sink area with anything big or heavy. I can't say for other members in my family but I'm trying to doubt it. We have little scuffs all around the sink edges that are not noticeable but I can feel them. Can someone please help as to why this could've happened? We're really concerned now. what can we do to prevent future damage? Could it also be because of the way it's cut around the sink area, it's straight? It's not as rounded bc of the square sink in sorry I don't know the technical terms trying to explain it best I can

i am a fabricator. Your stone is one we do regularly and not one that is particularly "chippy". My guess is those chips are from strikes from hard objects. In my shop we make the edge radius on the sink cutout larger (3/8") to make it less susceptible to chipping. Going forward you need to get your family members to be a little more cautious moving things into and out of the sink.

Good news is your fabricator has epoxies that can be color matched to your stone such that a good repair will be hard to detect once it's complete. In my shop we repair chips at no cost as long as the customer is willing to wait until we are in the neighborhood. Perhaps yours does the same.

I'd pull the faucet, re-profile to a larger radius as oldryder suggests, and polish the edge. The existing chips would no longer exist, making this the best repair. The larger radius is less likely to chip in the future. Expect to pay less than $500.00.

how green are the maters on the broken stem? You can take the stem and put it in very moist potting soil and see if the plant continues to ripen the maters. Generally a damaged plant will expend every last ounce of it's available energy trying to ripen the existing fruit. In fact one 'trick' to get green fruit to ripen at the end of the season is to damage the plant to get it to hurry up. This damage is generally using a shovel to hack off part of it's root system, but damage is damage ;-) Let the plant ripen them as far as possible and then let them finish ripening on their own. I wouldn't suggest leaving the maters outside in the sun after they are removed from the plant though. Bring them inside and place in a paper bag with a sliced up apple to ripen them. Apples produce ethylene gas naturally. Ethylene is what commercial growers use to ripen tomatos harvested green for shipping.

Bring sample doors from your perimeter cabinets and your island to the granite yard (or a couple of yards) to see which slabs make you happy with your cabinet finish. Yards sometimes give slabs different names, and since each slab is different you should pick out your slabs in person. This is especially important for stones that have a lot of variation and movement, since the slabs will vary more. The pictures I've seen of Sienna Bordeaux look beautiful, but you should go in person and see what looks beautiful to you. There have been several threads by people who purchased slabs, but when they went to pick them up or see them again those exact slabs were gone. So be sure to ask the folks at the yard how they'll make sure you get exactly the slabs you pick out and pay for. (Some people bring a Sharpie to put their name on back.)

Latest update!! I just came back from the original granite yard and saw the last remaining slab. It does have a crack going all the way through but it is far enough to one side that they can cut my laundry counter with it. I am SO GLAD I did not agree to the darker one going in yesterday before I saw this. It is a PERFECT MATCH to my existing granite. I must admit I feel terrible that the fabricator has to spend $$ on a whole new slab for one piece but then again I am spending over 11K on him and want to be happy. (Whoever mentioned to me that I will have to look at it for the rest of my life - that's what I keep thinking!) I had a realtor friend who used to be a construction supervisor come over this morning and look at everything. He said it all looks good with the exception of the chip in the sink and the 5/16" gap between the granite and the wall. He thinks they should replace both of those. I may use those as bargaining points for something else because there are no more slabs. Meeting with GC tomorrow, we'll see what he says. I created the exact same chip in my sink at some point, and I assume it from hitting the edge with a pot. I'm more careful now that I realize that can happen.

If your fabricator can fix it that is probably the best bet. Or re-profiling it as Joseph says to prevent it in the future.

However, we were able to fix the chip ourselves with a kit we ordered on Amazon. It worked beautifully and no one would ever be able to see where the chip was. (It takes me a while to find it and I know where it is.) The epoxy is clear, but you can't tell because you can see the stone behind it, so it blends in nicely.

Fillachip is better than epoxy, especially for the DIYers.

From my perspective that looks like it is all the same chip, as the color patterns all match. It looks like an impact caused it.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to respond sooner. Thank you for all of your suggestions. I will contact the fabricator today.

Joseph cortlett- we have a zero radius sink, I am guessing the fabricator profiled this area to match the sink shape to be more square and less radius (although I can't be sure) re-profiling the edges to 3/8 would give it a more rounded look. Any idea how this would look together? From an aesthetic perspective I don't want to hate this area but then again my family may continue to have accidents such as these and I'd rather be safe than sorry

We got one chip like that in the first 2 weeks of having our granite. I totally panicked thinking it was going to keep happening. 12 years later and we have not had another chip. They fixed the original chip and I couldn't find it if I tried.

Inm2016:

A square sink with a 3/8" radius at the top edge looks fine to me and this customer. You've got to be able to freehand the corners with diamonds, the cutter is too large to make it into the corner.

It's rounded at the top and around the counter top edges. My counter is just a touch out from my sink. I don't remember what they called it.

I paid a little extra for this edge around the sink and on the two outside edges of the counter tops.
