pedestal sink size and placement

First I'd like to thank everyone who has responded to my past messages. You have all helped me out in so many ways! Now I have another decision that I need to make which is driving me a little nuts.

Im the one who's building the small 5x8 bathroom. I've already ordered a 27 in. wide Kohler pedestal sink (Classic Memoirs model). The sink will be adjacent to the wall with the bathroom window. After measuring the space available for the sink, the right side of the sink will have to be up against the wall that the window is on. I don't recall ever seeing a pedestal sink up against a bathroom wall. Now Im thinking I should change the order to the 24 in wide model so there will be space between the sink and the wall. Maybe Im just over analyzing this. What do you think? I have another bathroom the same size and have a 30 in wide vanity against the wall (same position) and it looks fine. Im just not sure about the pedestal. (still figuring out how to get photo's on here....look for my next post...thanks!)

I have a bathroom the same size and originally had ordered a 27" Kohler pedestal Memoirs sink too. As the installation was happening I realized it was going to be way too close to my glass shower doors and had visions of bumping into them forever after every time I used the sink. So I switched to the 24" size.

It fits but the bowl is quite noticeably smaller. It works okay but to be honest if I had the chance to do it again I'd probably do some more serious sleuthing for a 24" sink whose bowl was a little larger. It is much smaller than the 27" size.

My advice is, if possible, try to compare both so you know exactly what you are giving up. I agree with you though, I don't think having the sink touching a wall on one side is going to look very nice-and if you set it up that way, you may end up with the same ergonomic issue (having it too close and bumping into it with hands/arms).

runningplace - thank you for your input. Do you have a picture? If so, that would be great. I know I'll be losing sink space if I go with the 24", but I'll gain space in the bathroom as a whole. I think it's most important to have a small functional bathroom....although aesethics play a big part. I thought this would be the easy part of this remodel\room addition!

I also bought separate bun feet to add to the cabinets, and mostly used them in corners at the ends of the runs plus on both sides of the stove and dishwasher. Our installer got paint to match the cabinets for them. Looks nice. You could try a dry run by setting them down in various places just to see how they might look.

My first floor powder room is 4' x 5' 8" so almost the same size as yours.The sink is 25" across The lower level powder room is only 4' x 5' but the sink is 27 " wide. As you can see it looks a little crowded in there ( please disregard the missing baseboard trim) but it would probably look fine in a room that was 6 inches wider like yours will be

We have the Toto Promenade 27" pedestal in our guest bath with the Kohler 25" x26" double door mirrored medicine cabinet over it. I didn't think I could fit scones either but I got these two and I think the room looks great.

We put in the 22" vanity and originally had it against the wall. They set up the vanity but didn't install the plumbing and left for the weekend - good thing because we discovered that if you tried to brush teeth or wash your face your elbow hit the wall. We moved it 3" out and it's fine now. If I were you I'd make a mock up and test it to see how it will really work.

FWIW, most building codes require a 4" space between the side of a pedestal/console sink and the adjacent wall. Vanities can be against the wall. Check with your local inspector's office, if you are going to be subject to inspection. I admit that my console sink is against the adjacent wall, violating code, but we were inspected with our first sink which was much smaller and met the requirements. (It was too tall for my comfort - for that reason alone I agree to mock it up! - and didn't fit aesthetically, so we replaced it, losing $250. Bleah.) But, it's also large enough at 32" wide that we're not mashed into the corner to do anything at it, and the adjacent wall is to the left while we're both right-handed.

I had the same concern. We made templates for the pedestal sink and toilet. They're side by side in our new bathroom. Did mockups for both 24" and 27" pedestals and in doing that realized the 27" would work fine.
