How much should I spend on tile samples?

Because I am searching for a tile that will have color variation from tile to tile (as well as within the tile) I feel as though I need to see several (5-10?) tiles to make a choice. But I also think that is going to start adding up pretty quickly. Most of the sample boards I've seen have about four tiles - or they have more, but seem to show less variation than accompanying photos. A box of Canyon Ridge Goldenrod (link below) which really appealed to me is almost 50.00$! And Lowe's said they couldn't order less than a full box.

Soooo... how many tiles do I need to see? How much did all of you spend on samples? How true to life did you find sample boards and photos in stores to be? Thanks for advice.

Here is a link that might be useful: Olean Canyon Ridge Goldenrod
