A difference of opinion?

Hi, Why is it that you can ask 5 different guys a question about motors and vehicles, and you can get 5 different answers? I'm not being sarcastic, just curious.

Another question. My radiator hose developed a leak. Not the big hose, it was a smaller diameter flexible hose with a couple 'right angle fittings' at the ends. When a friend repaired it he used silicone with the fittings. When another friend repaired the repair job that still leaked he said it didn't need silicone, that the fittings had 'o' rings. Who is right? Thank you, Ruth Ann

Not sure which hose that would be, but if it actually has o rings then it doesn't need silicone. In fact I've never seen any hoses in a car that use silicone.

I'm not sure which hose you are referring to, but it may be the heater hoses. Heater hoses do not use silicone. These are pushed over a fitting and held in place with a hose clamp. If one has cracked, it should not be repaired; It should be replaced. It is at its end of life and unreliable. Heater hoses are cheap and can be bought in long lengths at an auto parts store. You merely cut a piece to length and replace.

Be sure that you get heater hose quality and not plain water hose. Heater hose must hold hot anti-freeze mix at about 15 to 24 psi pressure.

If your hose has sharp bends, then a custom formed hose for you model may be desireble, but not necessarily mandatory.

lou is right, who is agreeing with who here? LOLOL stick to topsoil. site preparation for seed is a hassle, overall results wont be as good as quick, and the cost/time element is great. the last step-style bulb planter i bought i think was maybe??? 15 bucks? add the cost of a 12 pack of beer to drink while you do the work for 30 bucks youve got a new backyard. if you dont like beer and a neighbor has a planter you can borrow... a total lawn rennovation done right is a lot of work and expensive. seeding the backyard, (btw.. ive never used zoysia seed, never looked for it for that matter either) first you will want to spray glyphosate over everything where you want to rennovate, wait two weeks and spray again, two weeks after that drag the area clean with a tractor and a box blade. (if u want a sprinkler system now is the time) bring in some topsoil if you need to and drag that out level or you can come in with a tiller and just till existing soil up and then level and plant seed. roll it out and water it twice a day every day for a month. never let it get dry till the grass has been mowed twice. weeds will be a huge headache. that newly prepped seedbed is a haven for every weed seed to come by and they will compete with your new seedlings. rabbits love baby grass too. if you have a hot dry summer that new grass will take a beating . you can forget pre and post emergent herbicides - turf needs to survive its first winter before applying chemicals. is more susceptible to chem burn otherwise. (this bulb planter idea is starting to sound even better isnt it?)

I noticed I needed to clarify this. Running thru the attached garage and out its end exterior wall would be the longest run Running to the soffitt on the back of the house would be shorter Running up to roof would be shortest.

I'm reading this with interest - I grew up in a household w/11 people (9 children, 2 parents, DH & I now have 7 children between us & 2 grandchildren - For some odd reason I am extermely sensitive to noise. We did an entire home renovation 2.5 yrs ago and I was adamant about noise buffering/lowering solutions to every application. Our home is plaster walls (which provide excellent sound deadening)& we lost the largest ceiling (LR) so I came up w/a soundproofing solution for the GC who applied the materials. If you live in a home built after 1950 or so - and it is sheetrock - noise travels quite readily through sheetrocked walls, moreso through the joists the sheetrock is applied to. PVC pipe which replaced that nice fat old black pipe which was thicker & quieter. If flooring is "floating" it is more likely to increase the noise in the house - A material used prior to flooring being installed is MLV (Mass loaded Vinyl) 1/8" thick comes in large roll like rolled flooring. I used that on the ceiling in my basement renovation, after applying mineral wool between the joists - then I applied an acoustical tile - I know it sounds overkill - but my dream is that will eventually be the home theatre. I'm shocked at the amt of $$$ people pour into systems, wiring, LCDS, audio without doing anything to improve the sound quality in the room. Sorry to ramble on - My point really is to please do your research before deciding on anything or you will be throwing good $ down the drain. What was your home like prior to the flooring? When was it built, how long have you lived there etc... Below is link to an excellent site/Company (no I'm not affliated, they helped me though) with great detail on soundproofing - you can pick up the phone & get great advice Good luck Here is a link that might be useful: soundproofing

not a whole lot. I did look on Amazon about a yr ago after reading about dw water damage on 'kitchens'. i just looked there now and don't see the options i remembered seeing then. I've also been seeing an ad on tv for them. It has 5 or 6 for - well, less than 50.00. I don't remember the correct $ now. I remember thinking it was only a few dollars each. will watch for it next time and write down the brand name. They are small and sense the wet and sound an alarm. Maybe not loud enough to hear if you are sleeping. here's one page from Amazon to give you an idea. Here is a link that might be useful: water alarm

ruthann asks"

"Hi, Why is it that you can ask 5 different guys a question about motors and vehicles, and you can get 5 different answers? I'm not being sarcastic, just curious."

Well ruthann, guys can be opinionated; You've noticed that by now, right? Some guys have more good information than others, but can the uninitiated tell by merely listening? I think not. And the least informed guy may crow the loudest - Its the nature of the beast. So, if you line 5 guys with 5 different backgrounds, you can expect 5 different answers.

So, which one is correct, or at least, most correct. His answer has to make "sense" based on the conditions.

Another reason for getting different answers is the question itself. It has to be correctly posed to eliminate guess-work. If a person is guessing, there is a good probability he's answering the wrong question! And for every right question, there are many wrong questions and assumptions. Therefore, you would expect differing answers (and maybe all wrong answers). For example, the make and model of a car and which engine and transmission can make a difference in the answer. With a variety of manufacturers, there will be a variety of different details employed for doing the same thing. Some are different to merely avoid patent infringements. So if you have a spark-plug question, we also need to know what engine, how many miles on it, when was the last time the plug was changed, etc.

Now, back to the guy thing. The uninformed guy isn't going to tip his hand. You'll have to play psychologist to sort out who got the best goods.

A difference of opinion?
