Inexpensive paint job

I have a small Mazda truck that I need to paint white to make a work truck. I'm wondering how much an inexpensive paint job will cost. I'm assuming there are different levels of paint job.

What kind of place should I go to?

What are some things I should know while shopping around.

I used to get $29.95 paint jobs 40 years ago and had good luck with em. Spect they'd be a tad bit more now. $143.79 at 4% inflation. :-)

They don't do much masking or degreasing. Take off as much hardware as you possibly can. Disolve off the road tar. Scrub the car down thoroughly with comet cleaner. Rinse and dry thoroughly too, of course. Might hit any rust spots with something like Rustoleum Rust Reformer. Talk to em first and ask what you can do for prep work and what they don't mask. That's where I got the above tips. Pay special attention to cleaning the wheels as they will slough off on those. Pull the hub caps.

Couple years back I bot an air compressor, hi-pressure air gun plus the primer and paint and tape for about 1/2 the cost of having my P/U did which woulda been about $700. But I've did it before.

Depends on what kind of shape the paint that's on it is in. Figure $200-$300 for material minimum. The rest is sanding, cleaning and masking. If the paint that's on it now is in good enough shape to be painted over, a $600 job at maaco or the like will probably serve your purpose. If the paint is in bad shape, there isn't a cheep option. It would have to be stripped down to the metal and start over. Lots of labor. Probably $2000+.

In an older house, I painted the floor boards (most likely pine?) in one of the rooms. Despite it not being in a high traffic area, the paint did get scratched up easily. And showed dust like crazy. Mind you, I painted the floors in a weird, dark purple. White would be more forgiving, I think. Especially a white wash might show less wear? I guess that you'd be looking for unfinished floors? Or perhaps you'd have to use a primer after a light sanding? Wouldn't work so well if you were trying to white wash. Maybe talk to someone in a paint store first, and then look for flooring sales!

Zinsser makes a great primer. The others are right though, it won't go on evenly like your final coat. You're doing fine. :) I painted a wood desk last summer and when I finished with the primer, I thought the same thing, "oh, what a mess I've made." But then I put on the first finish coat (a black high gloss paint), all of my doubts went away. You may need to put on two coats of your regular paint though since you're covering the wood and primer. I would put one coat on and then see if you even need to fill those corners. A little spackle will work - no mixing needed. When you first apply it it will be pink and then it dries to white. Then you can lightly sand it and paint on your final coat. Also, as others mentioned..use a really good regular paint brush. It will have finer bristles and give you a nice, smooth application. The inexpensive brushes have courser bristles. Believe me, the brush does make a difference. Bottom line is... you're doing great! :)

thank you all for the painting advice. i think i will bite the bullet and take it down, sand and spray again. my contractor is not gonna be happy... localeater, I ordered the light from a houzz marketplace vendor. But unfortunately, have had many issues, extremely long shipping delays, no direct vendor communication (all communication is delayed, done only thru houzz customer service relaying messages from vendor), then the whole color issue, plus more delays. i would recommend buying it elsewhere for faster resolution of potential issues (many places sell it). The light itself is from the Murray Feiss Botanic collection. It is very high quality, very heavy metal and the floral glass is really nice in person. I ordered the pewter, which came in an appropriately marked box, but inside it was their aged brass color, a very dark brown/black color. I have yet to see the aged pewter color in person, lol. I am going to get a sample of winds breath that Beth recommended as it’s close to edgecombe gray 25%. And kind of in between colors. Thank you so much for everyone’s comments. I should have hired someone for this. My sister helped me with everything but she’s not available at the moment. Floors will be 50 super walnut and 50 Jacobean.
