Most all homes here in FL. are stucco, and the ones that are medditerrain style especially have barrel tile roofs example below: they do have metal roofs that look very much like these however they are extremely expensive, your choice, your money.. Yes, I finally had mine done a week ago with metal roof panels. I had read some old messages on here about it last year, and went ahead and finally had it done this year. We used "PBR" style panels that have 1-1/4 inch deep humps. I went with white color so it looks brighter underneath the deck, and don't really notice it from above. We used 2x6's attached to each existing joist on an angle to form a slope, and then used 2x4's across on 2-foot centers to form a frame to mount the metal panels too. We didn't screw through the humps because that's where the water drains down, we screwed right next to the humps. We also installed a gutter on the low side and tied into an existing downspout. Had a few rains so far and it has been drip free! I'm not sure how to add photos here...

About "Mediterranean" design: what comes to mind immediately are the houses in Greece designed by John Stefanidis. His own house, on the island of Patmos, is the focus of his latest book, An Island Sanctuary: A House in Greece. Just lovely! As for "Tuscan" style in the way that you all are describing it, while I've never eaten in an Olive Garden, that pseudo-Italian restaurant style certainly sounds horrid. I want my wine bottles in a wine cellar or in the fridge, and then emptied and in the recycling bin -- not ranged along the tops of my kitchen cabinets! As for fake vines, I actually had fake ivy running along the tops of the cabinets in our old house. A lame attempt to add some softness and color, and to liven up a not-very-good kitchen and all I accomplished was weaving a dust and grease catcher up high where it was hard to reach. When I finally took it down and placed the fake ivy where it belonged -- in the donation room at a local thrift store -- the kitched looked much, much better. There is something to be said for "honesty" and authenticity in houses, and I think a good part of that means decorating and designing for the geographic and cultural place in which you live. Anyway, I see I wandered OT. To go back to the original issue, in my mind there is a distinct difference between Tuscan and Mediterranean styles, especially as interpreted by Americans.

The Mediterranean is a very big pond, with 1000s of miles of coast, and while it is true there is precious little hard wood anywhere on the Med that people can use to build houses (rather than heat and cook with it), the style and colors of their houses are really very, very different depending where you go on the Med. If @Alexandra has visited places in Mediterranean that left her with happy memories, that might be her reference point for what “Mediterranean” style is — which can bear no resemblance at all to what gets called “Mediterranean style” in southern California or Florida. If there is no hope of using stone or stucco in the house design, but still a desire to incorporate some Mediterranean color palettes, then consider From around Nice: canvas white, strong yellow, navy and aqua blue, gray/lilac From the Italian Riviera: creamy white, mustard yellow, coral, olive green-silver From the Amalfi coast: stark white, turquoise, lemon yellow, deep green From Sicily: stone white, gold-yellow, aqua blue, purple, rose From Tunisia: stone white, sky blue, terracotta, black From Spain: Gold, pink, sandy white, emerald, cobalt, iron gray Just about nowhere on the Med do you find red anywhere (maybe in Sardegna) Interestingly, there are many parts of the coast in both France and Spain where modern rectangular 2-story houses made of light materials are really quite popular (around Barcelona, around Marseilles), but they make a lot of use of glass. I think a house in New England with modern windows (without grids or grilles) that used pure whites, strong blues (both deep sea and sky) and lilacs, with touches of yellow might pass with the neighbors and not look out of place, while bringing in a lot of Mediterranean sunshine, even with a great big green American lawn.
